Are you a parent or family member of a young child (birth to eight years old) with a

Do you want to work with others to promote inclusion and to increase or enhance inclusive
community-based options for young children with disabilities and their families?

Do you enjoy working as part of a small group through face-to-face, email and telephone

Birth to Five Community of Practice (CoP).
The Georgia Forestry Commission is now accepting applications for its Urban and Community Forestry (U&CF) grant program.
Through this program, local units of government including counties, cities and towns, non-profit organizations, and educational institutions are eligible to apply for funding to enhance urban and community forest resources.  This year, approximately $300,000 will be awarded statewide for projects that can help communities enhance the benefits of trees.
 
These funds must be matched dollar for dollar with in-kind or cash donations.

To be considered for funding, completed grant applications must be postmarked by Friday, May 1, 2009.
Emory Farmer's Market Returns 
The weekly farmers market makes its return to Emory's Cox Hall bridge on March 24.
 
Tuesdays on the Cox Hall bridge from 2:00 pm until 6:00 pm and will run until Thanksgiving.  The Cox Hall bridge is located between Emory University Hospital and Dobbs University Center; visitors are encouraged to
walk, take public transportation or Cliff to Emory's campus.  For those who need to drive, free parking is available after 4:30 pm in the Fishburne and Peavine parking decks.

Tee Ball and Youth Baseball
For 5-6 yr. olds, and then league play for 7-8 yr. olds, 9-10 yr. olds, and 11-12 yr. olds, all open for boys & girls.  Practices begin May 18, 2009.

Volunteer coaches are always needed.  The coaches meeting is 6:30 pm, Thursday, May 7, 2009, at the Decatur Recreation Center.

The parents meeting is 1:00 pm, Saturday, May 16, 2009, at the recreation center.

The very fun annual Opening Day parade will be held Saturday, June 6, 2009, from McKoy Park to Oakhurst Park.  Volunteer drivers, organizers and convertible vehicles are needed for the parade.

The proposed fiscal year 2009-2010 budget does not include a cost-of-living increase to the current teachers' salary schedule.  This may result in a slight reduction to the local portion of the salary schedule for all teachers.  This hearing is being held as required by GACode 20-2-212 to allow for public input regarding this matter. All interested DCSS personnel are invited to attend this meeting.
Hillcrest to Host Free Screenings at Community Health Fair
Prostate Cancer Screening and Workshop is planned.
   
Hillcrest Church of Christ will host its 3rd Annual Community Health Fair on Saturday, April 25, 2009, from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm.  Prostate cancer testing will be one of seven free health screenings to be held at 1939 Snapfinger Road in Decatur.  The event will also include a discussion with prostate cancer survivors and physicians and other valuable workshops, clinics and demonstrations and over 30 exhibitors and vendors.

Hillcrest will host an prostate cancer awareness discussion with cancer survivors and physicians at 11:00 AM on April 25. Free prostate cancer testing will take place from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM.

WPNA Environment & Infrastructure Committee has scheduled City Sanitation Services to hold Super Trash Day on April 25.  This is an annual event giving residents a chance to clean out excess stuff from their household.
All items to be collected should be placed at the curb no later than 7:30 am so that they will not have to double back for late setouts.

They shall collect yard trimmings, building materials (that are not from the work of private contractors), tires, appliances (not containing Freon), and trash that would not normally be placed in pay- as-you-throw (PAYT) bags.
They will not collect liquids, dirt, bricks, blocks, stone, rocks, concrete or motor vehicle batteries or parts.

Florida A & M University is providing an outstanding opportunity for Black women entering college in the fall of 2009.  It is designed to address their absence in the field of computer technology.  Dr. Jason Black is the Principal Investigator of a recently awarded $552,000 NSF Grant entitled African-American Women in Computer Science. The grant provides scholarships from $4000 to $10,000 per year for female African American students.
