Benfield Signs Letter to Governor asking that Vital Services to Georgia Families and Communities be protected during Budget Shortfall

Decatur - State Representatives Stephanie Stuckey Benfield (D-Atlanta) has signed on to the Georgia CURB (Ga. Coalition United for a Responsible Budget) letter to Governor Perdue urging the protection of critical health and human service programs from budget cuts. The letter will be delivered to Governor Perdue on December 5th.

"Some of the cuts hurt availability of services such as family planning, substance abuse treatment, stroke and heart attack prevention, and family violence shelters," said Representative Benfield. "Cutting critical services should be taken off of the table and instead, the Governor should focus on eliminating non-essential programs."

Georgia CURB (Ga. Coalition United for a Responsible Budget), is a broad group of health and social services advocacy groups working for a state budget that meets the needs of Georgia's hard working families and communities.  Georgia CURB advocates against harmful cuts in essential health and social services and for a budget that promotes sound investments in a healthy Georgia.

Presidential Inaugural Committee

President-elect Obama has formed the Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC), which is responsible for all balls, galas, receptions, parties, and the officialInaugural Day Parade.  This afternoon, the PIC released a press release stating:

In keeping with its pledge to make the inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama one of the most open andaccessible in history, the Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC) announced today that, for the first time, the entire length of the National Mall will be opened to the public so that more people than ever before will be able to witness the swearing-in of the President from a vantage point in sight of the Capitol.

The PIC has worked closely with officials from the District of Columbia government, the National Park Service, the Armed

Forces Inaugural Committee (AFIC), and the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies (JCCIC) to make space at this historic location available to members of the public who are unable to obtain tickets to the swearing-in. Those who come to witness the swearing-in on the Mall will be able to watch and listen to the ceremony on large screens that will be provided by the PIC along the Mall.

The full press release may be found at http://www.pic2009.org/pressroom/entry/open_inauguration/.
I am pleased that despite the very limited number of tickets Members of Congress have been allocated, more people than ever will be able to share in this historic event.

In addition, many of you have inquired about various opportunities to be a part of Inaugural events.  The PIC is currently accepting applications for temporary employees, event volunteers, and vendors.  To learn more about the PIC, you may visit www.pic2009.org.  Their website will be updated frequently as more information becomes available.

The Georgia State Retirees Association (GSRA) is an organization focused on keeping retirees and prospective retirees from all parts of Georgia Government well informed about changes in promised retiree and health insurance benefits.

The benefits provided by State pension and health insurance programs are under constant pressure by legislation and administrative regulation.  As a career employee, the State made contractual promises to YOU to provide a pension to meet your post-employment financial needs and a health insurance plan to pay most of your medical bills in exchange for your long and dedicated service.
