"Finding the Sunshine in a Cloudy Forecast"

Dave OwensCold, rainy days followed by a few days of sunshine, then another rainy period. Does that pattern sound familiar? As we head into May, let's hope that weather pattern gives way to sunshine and a dry period to accommodate spring planting.

The U.S. economy is also experiencing some cloudy days right now and the change in that pattern is less likely to occur in the near future. Many lawmakers hope to see a quick turnaround on the horizon, but most economists have a more pessimistic view. This is certainly not a normal recession.       Read more...
Schable Elected To AgriBank Board 
 
Director John SchableJohn Schable, of Tuscola, was elected to the Board of Directors of AgriBank in March 2009 to serve a four-year term. He has served on the Farm Credit Services of Illinois Board of Directors since 2001, previously serving on the FCS of Central Illinois Board of Directors since 1994. Read More . . .

New USDA Study Captures Economic Impact of Cooperatives 
More than 29,000 American cooperatives generate revenues of more than $654 billion
and employ more than 2 million workers.

A USDA study confirms what those involved in cooperatives have always known. Cooperatives have economic clout and provide enormous benefits to their members. The study provides a census-type of overview of 29,000 cooperative businesses in the nation with some 75,000 business locations and $3 trillion of assets.   Read More...

Meet two Farm Credit Services of Illinois members recently named 2009 Master Farmers.
 
LambdinsNelsonsFive exceptional Illinois farmers were named Prairie Farmer Master Farmers at a recognition luncheon in Springfield on March 4, 2009. Among the newly designated "Master Farmers" were Farm Credit Services of Illinois members Randy Lambdin of Wolf Lake and Rick Nelson of Paxton.

Other 2009 Master Farmers were Jo Daviess County dairy producers Doug and Tom Block and Fulton County beef and grain farmer Kent Schleich. (photos provided by Prairie Farmer)
Farm Credit Breaks Ground in Red Bud on New 'Green' Office
The building will provide 5,500 square feet of office space which could accommodate up to 17 office staff in the future.
 
Red Bud GroundbreakingFarm Credit Services of Illinois held a groundbreaking ceremony on April 8.2009 at a construction site for a new facility in Red Bud's East Industrial Park.

Twenty-three students in central and southern Illinois have been selected as 2009 "We Understand" Agriculture Scholarship recipients.  Each receives a $1000 scholarship funded by Farm Credit Services of Illinois.  Read More...
 
Young Farmers Selected for Cultivating Master Farmer Program
Cultivating Master Farmer LogoA group of fifteen young farmers and farm couples in Illinois have been selected to participate in the 2009-2011 Class of Cultivating Master Farmers (CMF). An additional group of 10 former recipients of the Prairie Farmer Master award will participate as mentors and experienced resources for the young farmers in the new CMF class.     Read More. . .
 
Staff In The Spotlight:  Terry Leitschuh
 
Terry LeitschuhTerry was named Regional Lending Manager earlier this year. Based in Highland, Terry now also supports the Belleville, Nashville, and Red Bud Branch Offices. His FCS career started in 1984 as a trainee with Federal Land Bank. Following assignments in Danville and Belleville, Terry helped open the Farm Credit office in Highland in 1989 and served as a loan officer in Highland until this past January when he was promoted to provide leadership to his regional team in Southern Illinois.  Read More...
