September 9 Meeting
Sandi Dolmatch, MFA and antiquarian book seller, will be doing double duty at our September 9 meeting. She will host and present a talk on how to get rid of our most precious possessions.
She'll start with what we think are our most treasured possessions and end with our garage sale items. We'll learn how to make those tough decisions of parting with things that are valuable to all of our family and what is valuable or sentimental to just us.
By decluttering our lives, we'll free ourselves from the added burden of dusting, insuring, and worrying about the things that take up time and space in our homes. |

Salade Nicoise
On August 15 people around the world remembered Julia Child, who would have been 100 years old. A friend sent me a link to Julia Child remixed. It's only 3 minutes and guaranteed to bring smiles and even a few tears as she shares some of her best culinary secrets.
I've been using the The French Chef Cookbook since 1968 when a friend gave it to me for an engagement present. The book includes 119 shows from her public television series. Salade Nicoise is one of my favorite summer main-course salads.
Ingredients
3 cups green beans
3 cups quartered tomatoes
3/4 - 1 cup vinaigrette
1 head Boston lettuce
3 cups sliced cooked potatoes
1/2 cup Mediterranean olives
3 hard-boiled eggs, peeled and quartered
12 canned anchovy fillets, drained
8 oz. canned tuna, drained
Directions 1. Drop green beans in boiling water and cook until tender crisp about 6 minutes. Drain and put in bowl of ice water to stop cooking. 2. Season beans and tomatoes with with several spoonfuls of dressing. Place lettuce leaves on a large platter and drizzle on vinaigrette. 3. Arrange beans, tomatoes, potatoes, tuna, olives, eggs and anchovies in an attractive display and drizzle remaining dressing over the salad.

Greetings!
I love these lazy August days when people are still away on vacation and the pace slows down a bit. It's a good rest before the Fall frenzy begins. A dozen of us GaGas got a chance to slow down and enjoy dinner al fresco on Martha's beautiful deck overlooking Redwood Shores lagoon. We sipped wine as the sun set, then watched the moon rise while enjoying our potluck dinner. There was lots of grandma bonding as we sat around Martha's dinner table sharing stories and good food. Diana was celebrating her first outing since neck surgery last June, coincidentally the day after our GaGa Sisterhood tea. Diana remembers getting good wishes from all of us before her surgery and was equally touched to be warmly welcomed back. It brings me great joy to know that grandmas feel comfortable and supported in the GaGa Sisterhood. Grandparents Day falls on September 9 this year. In 1978 President Jimmy Carter signed legislation proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day to honor grandparents. See the article below for suggestions on how to celebrate. |
Celebrate Grandparents Day
Contrary to popular belief, Grandparents Day was not dreamed up by Hallmark, but founded thirty years ago by Marian McQuade, a grandmother of 43 grandchildren. I spoke with McQuade's daughter in 2010 and wrote a post about McQuade, a true visionary whose tireless efforts focused attention on creating bonds between the generations. I'll be celebrating Grandparents Day with two dozen other GaGas at our bimonthly meeting. The topic is how to get rid of our precious possessions. For those of you who can't make our meeting, I just learned about some great ways to celebrate from a non-profit organization in Washington, DC called Generations United. They are dedicated to improving the lives of children, youth and older adults through intergenerational collaboration, public policies, and programs. In an effort to increase nationwide involvement in Grandparents Day, Generations United created a website with the slogan: Do Something Grand. There's an 18-page Take Action Guide, which features many suggestions for intergenerational activities that grandparents and grandchildren can take part in together during the week of September 8-15. The activities include reading, community service, and social media projects. If you have a cause you believe in, Do Something Grand on behalf of public policies that propel vulnerable children and youth forward and strengthen the long-term well-being of communities for all ages. Here's a link to some of the commitments grandparents have made. |
Programs for Our 2012 Meetings
The following programs are planned for the rest of the year so be sure to mark your calendar for these dates.
September 9, 2012 Disposing of Your Sentimental Possessions will be presented by our host Sandi Dolmatch. Sandi will share some tips for downsizing collections and objets d'art, by deciding what to toss, donate or bequeath to family and friends. November 4, 2012 Intergenerational Communication will be presented by Rachel Eryn Kalish. Rachel will discuss how to have dynamic, open, honest conversations across generations about any topic. December 6, 2012 Celebrate the 9th anniversary of the GaGa Sisterhood hosted by Carol Woodard again this year.

Would You Buy a Snarky T-shirt for Your Grandchild? Snarky sayings on t-shirts have always been popular, but now they're even putting them on baby clothes. I heard of one the other day that made my blood boil.
I was at a birthday party for my friend's one-year old granddaughter. The baby was happily feeding herself tortellini and managing to smear it everywhere. Someone joked about the baby stuffing her face again. Then she told the baby's mom: "I almost bought her a t-shirt that says: "Does this diaper make me look fat?" I was furious but didn't want to make a fuss so I just said: "That's not funny!" Read more ...
