2011 Programs
March 6 Artist Nancy Wulff will discuss the different stages of art development and the creative process in children. She'll also teach us some art projects to do with our grandchildren. May 1 We're going to have a member mixer instead of a presenter. We'll have small group discussions and opportunities to get to know each other.
July 10 Author and grandmother Julie Matsushima will share the inspiring story of her granddaughter who was born with cerebral palsy. In her book, For the Love of Aimee, Julie writes about the disappointments, challenges, and amazing achievements Aimee and Julie experience as they embark on a journey to find a breakthrough for Aimee.
November 6 Dr. Ruth O'Hara, research professor at Stanford School of Medicine, will discuss some of her work on sleep issues and give us some suggestions for improving our sleep.
We still need a speaker for September 17.

Greetings!
We GaGas find so many creative ways to engage with our grandchildren. I'd like to recommend a new book that offers 365 ways to have fun with your grandchildren outside. Author Rebecca P. Cohen is a gardening and outdoor lifestyle expert whose new book is Fifteen Minutes Outside: 365 Ways to Get Out of the House and Connect with Your Kids. On February 24, I was Rebecca's guest on her radio show Get Out of the House. I got to talk about the GaGa Sisterhood as well as brag about my mom, daughter and two granddaughters, who all love the outdoors. I met Rebecca two years ago while searching for some fun outdoor activities to do with my granddaughters. Rebecca had become concerned that her family wasn't spending enough time together. Her young sons often were absorbed with TV or electronic toys and she was busy checking email or doing housework. She made a rule: Every day, everyone has to spend some time together outside. She noticed when she was with her family outside they all got along better. "When they're outside," says Rebecca, "they can't scatter to their separate devices, whether TV, computer screen or iPhone." Now, she walks her sons, 6 and 8, to school and back each day. She and her husband take a walk with the boys and the dog after dinner most nights. They go biking or hiking on weekends.
Rebecca believes that time outdoors helps alleviate stress and encourages everyone to talk. She has learned more about her children's interests and how they think, and she and her husband find it easier to say things more openly outside.
We can all benefit from being outside and inspire our grandchildren to find ways to enjoy the outdoors. |

Take Your Grandchildren Outside
Activities to Enjoy Outside
Today's kids spend only four to seven minutes outside per day. They log more than seven hours per day in front of electronic media. Make a difference in the health and well-being of your grandchildren and feel the difference that it makes in you.
Here are some ideas to enjoy outside all year round while spending time with your grandchildren:
- Make a Birdfeeder - Make a bagel bird feeder yourself and hang it on a tree outside within view of where you eat breakfast. No bagel? Use a pinecone instead.
- Make Mud Prints - Give your grandkids license for what you feel comfortable with: mud shoe prints, mud bike tire prints, mud handprints, no rules? Let them loose and have towels ready by the door for muddy shoes and clothes as soon as you are home.
- Ships Ahoy! Sail Juice Box Boats in Puddles - After your grandkids finish their juice boxes, find a puddle and float them like boats.
- Look for an Aerial Battle - Notice small birds engaged in battle with a larger bird in the distance overhead. Keep watch on the sky; do you see a turf battle? A hawk hunting for newly hatched baby birds? What can you find?
- Make Your Own Fossil - Take a small box, tape both sides and remove one side of the box. Fill the box with mud and press objects, such as shells, rocks, leaves, or sticks into the mud and bring the boxes inside to dry.
Outings with Grandchildren
At our January meeting, I got some suggestions of places to take our grandchildren:

Mother-Daughter Retreat
My daughter, Deborah, and I are co-leading a mother-daughter communication retreat with yoga teacher Jackie Long, MFT, Saturday, June 11 from 9 am - 8 pm at Stillheart Retreat Center, Woodside, CA.
 | | Stillheart Retreat Center | The daylong retreat will consist of gentle yoga, communication seminars, and interpersonal exercises to explore and nurture the mother-daughter relationship. There will also be time for self-care. Participants will have the option to soak in the hot tub, take a dip in the pool, hike in the Redwoods, curl up on the couch, and/or read a book in the library. This retreat is open to all women interested in exploring their mother-daughter or mother-in-law daughter-in-law relationship. You can attend alone or with your mother or adult daughter.
While developing the content for the workshop, I wrote a post on my blog: 10 Tips for Improving Mother-Daughter Communication

| Granddaughter Inspires with Good Deed
GaGa Carol W. sent me a photo of her 10-year old granddaughter, Cate, who donated her hair to Locks of Love. The mission of Locks of Love is to give wigs, made from donated hair, to children suffering from hair loss and help them regain a sense of self-confidence and normalcy. Cate decided on her own to donate 10 inches of her hair. I'm familiar with Locks of Love because my daughter has donated her hair to them twice. You can read my post to learn more about the organization.

Sew and Chat Night
Our first Sew and Chat Night hosted by Dee turned out to be a huge success. Eight of us gathered in Dee's comfortable family room to chat and laugh. No one brought sewing except Dee! We needed our hands free so we could give all our attention to the conversation! It was such a satisfying evening--we each had a chance to share some stories about our own lives and get to know each other. We also brainstormed about issues that come up for all of us.
If you would like to host an "in between" meeting, please let me know. These informal get togethers have a totally different feel than our meetings--much more personal with a chance to delve deeper.
Note: I told my daughter about our evening and she said her generation calls it "Stitch and Bitch!"
