| SPOTLIGHT | | Lutheran, Anglican, Roman Catholic and United Methodist Gathering The annual Virginia LARCUM Conference will be held Dec. 2-3 in Waynesboro, Virg. The gathering will include rostered leaders and laity from the Lutheran, Anglican, Roman Catholic and United Methodist (LARCUM) traditions. This year's theme is "Living Into the LARCUM Covenant," which refers to the document signed in 2006 with the closing: "May the Holy Spirit, who has brought us to this moment of covenanting, bring us to ever deepening levels of unity. To this end we affix our names and recommend it to our respective judicatories...." The 2011 gathering will include a Bishops' Forum, worship and presentations. Bishop Graham will participate. | SYNOD HAPPENINGS | | | Festival of Favorite Hymns
How about a Festival of Favorite Songs to celebrate a fall day on Sat., Nov. 12 at Grace Lutheran in D.C. (16th & Varnum)? The music festival will be held at 4:00 p.m. The church choir built the selections around the question, "What's your favorite hymn?" The concert is free, but a freewill donation will be collected. Annual InterFaith Concert Reopens Cathedral VenueThe InterFaith Conference of Metropolitan Washington will present its 32nd Annual InterFaith Concert on Nov. 15. This year, the location will be Washington National Cathedral - making this one of the first public events at the Cathedral since the earthquake in August. The concert is scheduled from 7:30-9:00 p.m. "The very high vaulted ceilings of our host site... will resound with the music and dance of five diverse faith communities." Concert Benefits HIV/AIDS Assistance in South Africa
A benefit concert for 25:40, an organization founded to help save children impacted by HIV/AIDS and poverty in southern Africa, is being hosted by Abiding Presence Lutheran in Burke, Virg. on Sun., Nov. 20 at 5:00 p.m. The concert will feature gifted musicians from the congregation family along with talented guests, including Christian recording artist Scott Zacaroli. Free childcare will be provided by youth of Abiding Presence. Refreshments will be served. The concert is free, and all proceeds from the freewill offering will go to 25:40 to fund programs for orphans in Canizbe, South Africa. EXTRAS
All Welcome at Pre-Thanksgiving Dinner (Pass it On!) A free dinner "for those who are homeless, who are of limited means, who are lonely, or who simply want to join in our family of Christ for a hearty meal" is being hosted by Georgetown Lutheran Church (at Volta and Wisconsin) on Wed., Nov. 23. The annual free, Pre-Thanksgiving Dinner is held at 6:00 p.m. with an optional Thanksgiving Service following at 7:30 p.m. Post the flyer and share the opportunity widely, invites Bill Schilling of the congregation. Spirituality of Aging
"Spiritual Vitality After 70" is a workshop being offered at Virginia theological Seminary. It will explore the spirituality of aging that helps people continue lives of abundance even in the face of loss and change. Participants will explore the psychological, emotional and physical changes that come with aging and will learn about the spiritual awakening of the dying and their families. Presenters Lisa Kimball, Dorothy Linthicum and John Daniels have broad experience in the church and represent several perspectives on this topic. Churches Planting Churches Church consultants tell us that the best way to reach the unchurched is by planting new churches. That's why this seminar was developed, which is coming to our area cosponsored by the ELCA Metro D.C. Synod, ELCA Delaware-Maryland Synod, and Southeastern District-LCMS. "Churches Planting Churches" will take place Jan. 27-28, 2012, at St. Stephen Lutheran in Arbutus, Md. Pastors, congregation leaders, mission executives and district presidents who have taken this seminar have developed a contagious spirit and become advocates for churches planting churches. Church Leader Retreats on Tuesdays at Mar-Lu-RidgeSojourners Connect retreats for church leaders are held at Mar-Lu-Ridge in Jefferson, Md., on the second Tuesday of each month. Regional discipleship TrainingThe North American Association for the Catechumenate (NAAC), an ecumenical organization that connects with the ELCA and its full communion partners, is offering three regional training institutes in 2012 for pastors, musicians and lay leaders. The nearest location for the Metro D.C Synod will be Baltimore (April 13-15). Dr. Jessicah Duckworth is among the presenters. Additional locations are: Phoenix (Feb. 24-26) and Minneapolis (May 18-20). The events, called "Go, Baptize, Make Disciples," are designed to move a congregation from a paradigm of maintenance to one of mission, from membership to discipleship.
