How to Get More Members Seminar
 How to Get More Members is a two-day seminar planned for Oct. 22 and Oct. 23 at Epiphany Lutheran in Burtonsville, Md. Griffith Coaching Network, which will bring the training, has a reputation for helping churches become invitational. The seminar is offered in conjunction with our synod's 2011 theme, "To See Ourselves as Others Do." The training is designed for congregation teams. Registration before 9/15 is $199/congregation. EXTRAS Conference on BRAC & Support of Military Members, Vets and Families A  round 31,000 jobs will migrate to and around our area as the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process culminates. The synod has planned a "BRAC & Support to Military Members, Veterans and Families Conference" on Saturday, October 29, to equip our congregations to support military personnel and families in our midst. Meet military chaplain leaders from area bases, attend workshops and hear a keynote address from Colonel David Sutherland, Special Assistant to the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff. The event will take place at Faith Lutheran in Arlington from 8:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Fee is $15, including lunch. EXTRAS Day of Prayer & Conversation for Young Adults  Young adults are invited to assemble with two thoughtful and invigorating authors for time to think about, discuss, pray over and try practicing faith in God for a young adult conference on Sat., Nov. 5 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The time will look at the question, "I believe in God, now what?" Two of the authors of Common Prayer: A Liturgy for Ordinary Radicals will join all who come for the Day of Conversation and Prayer at Luther Place Memorial in NW D.C. Annual Together in Mission "Daughter" Church Concept Explored  Church consultants tell us that the best way to reach the unchurched is by planting new churches. That's why this seminar was developed, which is coming to our area cosponsored by the ELCA Metro D.C. Synod, ELCA Delaware-Maryland Synod, and Southeastern District-LCMS. "Churches Planting Churches" will take place Jan. 27-28, 2012, at St. Stephen Lutheran in Arbutus, Md. Pastors, congregation leaders, mission executives and district presidents who have taken this seminar have developed a contagious spirit and become advocates for churches planting churches. Several opportunities to mark the 10th anniversary of 9/11 are being held in our area. Night of Music for Youth
Music will jazz a night for youth at King of Kings Lutheran in Fairfax, Virg., when the "Citizens with the Saints" Tour arrives on Sat., Sept. 17 from 5-7:00 p.m. Jericho, the synod's youth band, will open, and AGAPE and Rachel Kurtz will perform. Local Lutherans Concerned Banquet Lutherans Concerned/Metro Washington DC Chapter extends an invitation to the 2011 Annual Banquet on Fri., Sept. 23 at Lutheran Church of the Reformation on Capitol Hill. A retired Anglican bishop from Uganda, Bishop Christopher Senyonjo, will be the banquet's featured speaker. He founded St. Paul's Reconciliation and Equality Centre in Kampala. Banquet begins at 6:30 with a social hour. Cost is $25 (basic) or $40 (patron) with scholarship assistance available. Synod Assembly's Fall Session  Whether you attended Spring Session or not, you're invited to the Fall Session of the 2011 Metro D.C. Synod Assembly. The one-day event on Sat., Sept. 24 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in McLean, Virg., will feature a noted keynote speaker, Len Sweet, and workshop opportunities as well as a worship service joining voices from across our area. Church Library Association to Meet Locally The local chapter of the National Church Library Association will hold its next meeting on Saturday, September 24 at 9 a.m. It will be held at the Church of the Good Shepherd (Episcopal) in Burke at 9350 Braddock Rd, 22015. The topic will be, "Which books REALLY circulate from your church library?" Anyone interested in church libraries is welcome. We hope that members and guests will come with stories or statistics from their own libraries about the books people check out (and the books that stay on the shelf!). Annual Benefit Yard Sale in NW D.C. The annual 100 Family Benefit Yard Sale is coming up at Christ Lutheran in D.C. (corner of 16th & Gallatin Streets, NW) on Sat., Sept. 24 (10 a.m.-4 p.m.) and Sun., Sept. 25 (noon-4 p.m.). Beneficiaries include Transitional Housing Corporation, Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area, and the Rwanda School Project.  If your youth ministry volunteers and/or staff haven't taken YM101, a workshop hosted by the Metro D.C. Youth Ministry Team, a session will be offered on Sat., Sept. 10 from 9 a.m.-noon at Emmanuel Lutheran in Vienna. (NOTE - An equipping session will be held that afternoon, advancing the themes - see below.) YM101 includes an overview of youth ministry using findings from the National Study of Youth and Religion and Exemplar Youth Ministry, and expands on the who/what/why/how of events and congregational investment. Advancing Faith Formation Through Youth Events  Discussion of how youth ministry events are faith formation opportunities, including nitty-gritty concerns such as release and consent forms, crisis management and event finances, will take place locally this month. Select Sat., Sept. 10 from 1-4:00 p.m. at Emmanuel Lutheran in Vienna or Sun., Sept. 25 from 2-5:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran in North Bethesda. This training is free, and offered to any adult involved with youth ministry - pastor, paid staff, volunteer - thru the team of the ELCA Youth Gathering and ELCA Youth Ministry Network. The last hour of the workshop will offer information on the 2012 ELCA Youth Gathering, but the sessions are intended to be for all whether or not they plan to take part in the Gathering. Active Way to Study New Testament "Walk Thru the Bible - New Testament" is a highly interactive seminar coming to Prince of Peace in Gaithersburg on Sat., Sept. 17 from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. The opportunity is an energetic and fun way to learn more about the New Testament. Using Technology in Worship & Education Richmond isn't too far away. "A Byte of the Future - A Conference on Using Technology in Worship and Education" will be offered by the Center for Ministry and Leadership Development at Union Presbyterian Seminary there on Oct. 18-20. Keynotes, workshops and model worship and education segments will show what can be done with technology in the church while remaining faithful. Gleaning America's fields, feeding America's hungry is the tagline of the Society of St. Andrew, an ecumenical group that hosts intergenerational weekend gleaning trips among other things. Worship Revitalization Workshop The Lower Susquehanna Synod's Partners in Evangelical Worship (PEW) group is hosting "Resisting the Rut: Revitalizing Worship in Your Congregations" on Sat., Sept. 24 from 9:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The event in Camp Hill, Penn., at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran is for musicians, clergy, worship planners and congregational leaders. | SECOND GLANCE | | CEUs for Roster Leader Retreats at Mar-Lu-Ridge
Sojourners Connect Retreats at Mar-Lu-Ridge are resuming on September 13 after taking the summer off. Six contact hours of continuing education units (CEUs) will be issued per retreat. These retreats take place on the second Tuesday of each month for clergy and church leaders. Leaders are invited to these opportunities to get away from the ordinary at the beautiful campus near Jefferson, Md., featuring presentations by Dr. Eric Gritsch, Emeritus Professor of Church History, Gettysburg Seminary. "[Dr. Gritsch] is both a renowned church historian and an up-to-date communicator of what people are seeking today as 'Good News,'" says the Rev. LaVern D. Lutheran Historical Society Trip Planned The Lutheran Historical Society of the Mid-Atlantic (LHSMA) will host a Pilgrimage to Trappe, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, October 22. This trip celebrates the 300th anniversary of the birth of Henry Melchior Muhlenberg and the village from which the patriarch's ministry radiated. The Historical Society of Trappe owns and operates two homes including the Muhlenberg House, both of which have been restored and furnished to capture the 18th century setting. Significant sites and the oldest unaltered Lutheran church in the U.S. are included on the pilgrimage as is a presentation by the Rev. Dr. Karl Krueger, library director, Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia. LHSMA will share additional information. See www.lhsmidatlantic.com.
Luther Seminar in Germany The Wittenberg Center of the Lutheran World Federation, located in Wittenberg, Germany, will host a 4th International Seminar within the Luther decade on Oct. 30-Nov. 13. The aim of the seminar is to become better acquainted with Luther's theology, particularly in relation to the respective contexts of participants and with an ecumenical openness to other confessions. It will be led by Professor Theodor Dieter and Professor Sarah Hinlicky Wilson from the Institute for Ecumenical Research in Strasbourg. Mennonite Peace Center Workshops Workshops are coming up which may be of interest to church leaders, offered by the Lombard Mennonite Peace Center. - A workshop in Mediation Skills Training Institute for Church Leaders will be held Nov. 14-18 at the Forest Lake Presbyterian Church. Contact hours and a certificate available for attendees. The workshop equips pastors, church and judicatory leaders with skills necessary to deal effectively with interpersonal congregational and other forms, of group conflict within the context of family systems theory. (See brochure for workshop dates in August in Chicago area, and in November in Dallas.) Tuition is $695 including some lunches. Participants must arrange for own lodging and additional meals.
EXTRAS - A two-session Clergy Clinic in Family Emotional Process will bake place in Lombard, Illinois. The Clergy Clinic helps participants understand implications of concepts for one's family system, as well as one's functioning as a leader within a congregational system. Concepts include triangles, differentiation of self, sibling position and emotional cutoff.
