Stewardship, Transition and Adapting to Social Change 

Transitions retreatOn Saturday, July 23, Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Manassas will host the 2011 Epiphany Lutheran Church Retreat on "Stewardship, Transition and Adapting to Local Change." It will take place from 9:00 a.m.-noon. Presenters include the Rev. Jeff Jacobson on "A Biblical Conversation on Transitions;" the Rev. Phil Hirsch on "Stewardship 101;" and the Rev. Resurrection Lutheran in Kensington to Hold Closing Worship 
Synod sponsored event  Closing Worship at Resurrection LutheranJoin us on Sunday, July 31, at 4:00 p.m. for the closing worship service of Resurrection Lutheran Church in Kensington, Md., and for a dinner following, celebrating the old and new congregations who use this building to worship and serve the Lord. It will be a traditional Lutheran service with many of your old favorite Lutheran hymns and liturgy. The Rev. Phil Hirsch will be preaching and representing the Metro D.C. Synod. 
          While Resurrection is dissolving, they are transferring their property and facility to the Oromo Christian Fellowship, with whom they have worked for many years. Former Resurrection members will be able to watch the Oromo Christian Fellowship grow as they grew sixty years ago. The Oromo people w ill maintain a Lutheran presence serving the communities of Wheaton and Kensington, perhaps for another sixty years.

Daily Prayer Vigil Downtown for "Faithful Budget" 

The ELCA Washington Office invites our leaders, members and friends to participate in the 15-20 minute "Faithful Budget Daily Prayer Vigil" which begins at 12:30 p.m. outside of The Methodist Building (100 Maryland Ave. NE) every day from now until July 22. Prayers for a fair and just federal budget as Congress and The White House continue budget/deficit reduction negotiations are shared, organized by the Washington Interfaith Staff Community (WISC) in which the ELCA Washington Office participates. On Wednesday, July 20, about 60 Lutheran high school students from Wisconsin will be participating. On Thursday, July 21, the ELCA Washington Office will take the lead prayers focused on "Protecting Older Adults."
  
Adoption Support Group   
A new Adoption Support Group has begun meeting biweekly at the Lutheran Church of the Abiding Presence in Burke, Virg. Organized by Abiding Presence members who are on the adoption journey, meetings take place on Thursday nights from 7-8:30 p.m. The group is for families experiencing difficult times, families who have successfully navigated the pathways and can share wisdom and insight, and those considering or waiting to adopt. LLF Luncheons   
Lutheran Lay Fellowship Luncheons are held on the first Thursday of each month from noon-2:00 p.m. at St. Luke Lutheran in Silver Spring (9100 Colesville Rd. at Dale Drive, 1 mile south of Beltway at Exit 30).
  • In August (Thu. Aug. 4), Kathryn Baerwald, Director of Philanthropy, National Lutheran Communities and Services, will make the presentation.
  • In September (Thu. Sept. 1), President Jon Diefenthaler, Southeastern District, LCMS, will make the presentation.

Recovery Worship Service   
A Recovery Worship Service for those who participate in a 12-step program will be held on Thursday night, August 18, at Living Faith Lutheran Church in Rockville (1605 Veirs Mill Rd., 20851). The service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Call 301-424-8622 for more information.
  
Quilt-covered Gettysburg Seminary?   
Bring a quilt to the Gettysburg Seminary campus, which will be transformed on Fri., Aug. 26, into 52 acres of aid, care, prayer and hope for people living in disaster ravaged corners of the world. "Quilt the Campus" is a servant event of the Friends of Gettysburg Seminary (FrOGS) partnering with the seminary, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and Lutheran World Relief (LWR). To "Quilt the Campus," participants are needed between 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. to bring a total of 1,892 quilts needed to cover the campus; and to raise through donations the $2.25/quilt required to deliver each quilt to an area of need ($4,257 total). Fall Focus of Sojourners Retreats   
Sojourners Connect Retreats at Mar-Lu-Ridge are taking the summer off then resuming on September 13. These retreats take place on the second Tuesday of each month for clergy and church leaders. Leaders are invited to these opportunities to get away from the ordinary at the beautiful campus near Jefferson, Md., featuring presentations by Dr. Eric Gritsch, Emeritus Professor of Church History, Gettysburg Seminary. "[Dr. Gritsch] is both a renowned church historian and an up-to-date communicator of what people are seeking today as 'Good News,'" says the Rev. LaVern D. How to Get More Members Seminar   
Synod sponsored event  How to Get More Members is a two-day seminar planned for Oct. 22 and Oct. 23 at Epiphany Lutheran in Burtonsville, Md. Griffith Coaching Network, which will bring the training, has a reputation for helping churches become invitational. The seminar is offered in conjunction with our synod's 2011 theme, "To See Ourselves as Others Do." The training is designed for congregation teams. Registration before 9/15 is $199/congregation. BRAC Conference for Congregations   
Synod sponsored event  A total of 31,858 net-migration of Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC)-related jobs (military, government and contracting) will flow into and around the Metro D.C. area. The synod is planning a BRAC Conference on Saturday, October 29, to help our congregations in this context and equip us to support military personnel and families in our midst. Meet military chaplain leaders from area bases and hear a keynote address. Registration will soon be available from the synod Web site BRAC page.
  
Authors Lead Young Adult Prayer Day   
Synod sponsored event  Two of the authors of Common Prayer: A Liturgy for Ordinary Radicals will join young adults in our synod for a Day of Conversation and Prayer on Saturday, November 5 at Luther Place Memorial in NW D.C. Vision for Churches Planting Churches   
Synod sponsored event  Church consultants tell us that the best way to reach the unchurched is by planting new churches. That's why this seminar was developed, which is coming to our area cosponsored by the ELCA Metro D.C. Synod, ELCA Delaware-Maryland Synod, and Southeastern District-LCMS. "Churches Planting Churches" will take place Jan. 27-28, 2012, at St. Stephen Lutheran in Arbutus, Md. Pastors, congregation leaders, mission executives and district presidents who have taken this seminar have developed a contagious spirit and become advocates for churches planting churches. July 17 "Greening... Sanctuaries" Expo

"Greening our Sanctuaries: An Interfaith Workshop and Expo" will be held Sunday, July 17 from 1:30-5:00 p.m. at Adat Shalom Reconstructionist Congregation in Bethesda, Md. Discover the latest, most effective methods, techniques and approaches for operating our sacred spaces in ways that fully reflect our values, including tours of a vegetable garden, rooftop solar system, best practice ideas including grounds keeping and green procurement, and connections with green resource vendors and organizations. The Rev. Sarah Scherschligt, member of the synod's Creation Care Team and a pastor of Prince of Peace Lutheran, recipient of a City of Gaithersburg Environmental Award, is among the presenters. A donation of $10 at the door is suggested.
  
Spanish Language & Culture for Pastoral Settings   
Spanish Language and Culture for Pastoral Settings is a course offered this fall from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland in Baltimore. Professionals or volunteers who will or do work with Hispanic communities will learn basic conversational skills and elemental phrases to better communicate with Spanish-speaking persons. The cultural component emphasizes the spirituality, faith expressions, customs and traditions of Hispanics. Part 1 requires no prior experience in Spanish. Part 2 advances the study. Part 1 is offered Sept. 20-Nov. 29 on Tuesdays at either 3-5 p.m. or 6-8 p.m. Part 2 is offered Sept.  21-Nov. 30 on Wednesdays from 4-6 p.m. Fee is $400/person with reduction for three participants before Sept. 6. Small Organization Governance Teleconference

A teleconference series initiated by Lutheran Services in America (LSA) will explore "Great Governance for Small Organizations." Jill Schumann, President/CEO of LSA, and Rick Stiffney, President/CEO of Mennonite Health Services Alliance, will be featured. The first of four sessions has already taken place, but forthcoming sessions will discuss "Great Boards Stewards Mission and Identity" (August 10), "Great Meetings/Great Materials" (September 7), and "Great Boards Shape the Future" (September 21). Tweens & Teens Conference   
The Lower Susquehanna Synod is offering a "Tweens & Teens Conference" on Saturday, August 27 at Zion Lutheran in Hummelstown, Penn. from 8:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. This conference will help empower, equip and energy youth learning ministries with practical and fast tools for all aspects of youth faith formation. It is facilitated by youth leaders with decades of experience, with a keynote presentation by Chelle Huth, AIM. Fee including lunch is $15; seminarians and students are free. Keys to Effective Church Conference with Author   
The Virginia Synod is sponsoring a conference on Sept. 6-7 on "Developing Keys to an Effective Church: Developing Leaders, Encouraging Leaders, Bridging with People." It will be held at St. Mark's Lutheran in Roanoke. Dr.  Kennon L. Callahan, author of Twelve Keys to an Effective Church: Strong Healthy Congregations Living in the Grace of God, will lead the conference. Learn to build on our strengths; develop congregation leaders; and understand people's motivations to act among other themes. Registration fee is $85. Workshops from Lombard Mennonite Peace Center   
In Columbia, SC, three workshops are coming up which may be of interest to church leaders, offered by the Lombard Mennonite Peace Center.
  • A Facilitator Training Event in what is called the "Here I Stand" Process will be offered in Lombard, Illinois, on August 16-18. Core in the process is development and reflection on an individual "Beliefs Chart." Clarity on beliefs and principles helps people function in a steadier way when anxiety rises in family and other important relationships, impacting increasing occurrence of burnout and turnover, destructive conflict, withdrawal and departure of members and other signs in the life of the church. Tuition is $325 excluding lodging and meals. Extras available EXTRAS 
  • A workshop in Mediation Skills Training Institute for Church Leaders will be held Nov. 14-18 at the Forest Lake Presbyterian Church. Contact hours and a certificate available for attendees. The workshop equips pastors, church and judicatory leaders with skills necessary to deal effectively with interpersonal congregational and other forms, of group conflict within the context of family systems theory. (See brochure for workshop dates in August in Chicago area, and in November in Dallas.) Tuition is $695 including some lunches.   • A two-session Clergy Clinic in Family Emotional Process will bake place in Lombard, Illinois. The Clergy Clinic helps participants understand implications of concepts for one's family system, as well as one's functioning as a leader within a congregational system. Concepts include triangles, differentiation of self, sibling position and emotional cutoff. Pick a Group A date (Oct. 24-26, 2011; Feb. 6-8, 2012; or Apr. 23-25, 2012) and a Group B date (Nov. 7-9, 2011; Feb. 27-29, 2012; or May 21-23, 2012) to complete the Leadership Training Program. Lutheran Men in Mission Gathering 

The triennial Lutheran Men in Mission (LMM) Gathering will be held July 22-24 in Denver at the Marriott Tech Center Hotel. This two-day event will provide men of all ages with an opportunity to challenge themselves to focus on what is important in their lives. Speakers will include the Rev. Larry Clark, pastor of St. Mark's Lutheran in Chicago; Jay Gamelin, pastor at Jacob's Porch, a campus mission at Ohio State University; Pat Morley, CEO of Man in the Mirror; Lyman Coleman, general editor of the MasterBuilder's Bible for Men and developer of the One Year to Live retreat; and Paul Hill, executive director of Vibrant Faith Ministries. Music will be provided by Peter Mayer, a dear friend of LMM and lead guitar for Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefers Band. For more information, go to www.lutheranmeninmission.org.
In conjunction with the LMM Gathering, the LMM Assembly will be held on July 21-22. Each synod is entitled to six delegates to the Assembly, which is the highest legislative authority of LMM. Currently, the Metro D.C. Synod has two delegates. "Glocal" Global Mission Gatherings from ELCA   
Global Mission Gatherings hosted by the ELCA equip us by considering: What is mission? and; Who is the neighbor? The day and half event for congregational leaders includes worship, workshops and sharing around global and local mission. Registration is open for several events, scheduled in Decorah, Iowa (July 22-23); Lacrosse, Wisconsin (July 29-30); Norcross, Georgia (August 4-6); San Antonio, Texas (September 23-24); Wichita, Kansas (September 30-October 1); and Long Beach, California (October 21-22). The events are called "GLOCAL," since they are a combination of global and local. See www.elca.org/gme for details.
  
Preaching & Worship Institute   
Our Episcopal neighbors have invited us to the Preaching and Worship Institute, August 17-19, at the Episcopal Cathedral of the Incarnation, Baltimore. Dr. Alexander Shaia and a team will facilitate this opportunity for clergy, musicians, teachers and anyone interested in learning a new perspective on the liturgical year and its application. Seminar presentations, personal reflection, varied methods of prayer and group discussion are included. Youth Ministry Cert School at LTSG   
The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg (LTSG) will offer a Youth Ministry Certification School course series beginning August 18. Historical Society Hosts Trip to Trappe   
The Lutheran Historical Society of the Mid-Atlantic (LHSMA) will host a Pilgrimage to Trappe, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, October 22. This trip celebrates the 300th anniversary of the birth of Henry Melchior Muhlenberg and the village from which the patriarch's ministry radiated. The Historical Society of Trappe owns and operates two homes including the Muhlenberg House, both of which have been restored and furnished to capture the 18th century setting. Significant sites and the oldest unaltered Lutheran church in the U.S. are included on the pilgrimage as is a presentation by the Rev. Dr. Karl Krueger, library director, Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia. LHSMA will share additional information. See www.lhsmidatlantic.com.
  
Seminar in Wittenberg, Germany   
The Wittenberg Center of the Lutheran World Federation, located in Wittenberg, Germany, will host a 4th International Seminar within the Luther decade on Oct. 30-Nov. 13. The aim of the seminar is to become better acquainted with Luther's theology, particularly in relation to the respective contexts of participants and with an ecumenical openness to other confessions. It will be led by Professor Theodor Dieter and Professor Sarah Hinlicky Wilson from the Institute for Ecumenical Research in Strasbourg. McLaren to Keynote TIM

Youth Education Program Coordinator (Part-time)

Resurrection Lutheran in Arlington, Virg., seeks a Youth Education Program Coordinator to work with the pastors and Education Committee volunteers to plan, produce, organize and provide administrative support for Christian education activities for children and youth, as well as special family-oriented activities that normally would take place on Sundays. Applicants should have a demonstrated commitment to working with children and youth and a genuine interest in providing a safe, nurturing, Christian learning environment. General computer and internet skills required. Part-time (20 hrs/wk max) position; work location flexible with some core hours on Sunday mornings and other times to be determined. ESL Teacher in El Salvador (Volunteer)   
Serve as a volunteer at the Colegio Luterano Salvadoreno in San Salvador, El Salvador. The work assignment would include ESL classroom teaching (grades K through 9) and working with administration to facilitate communications with sister churches and schools in the U.S, and other countries.
