Financing Energy-Efficiency Improvements
On Saturday, April 2, Prince of Peace Lutheran in Gaithersburg will host a workshop called "Receiving Cash Incentives for Energy-Efficiency Improvements at your Faith-Based Organization." The workshop will run from 10:00 a.m.-noon. The synod Creation Care Team put together the event featuring a panel of local experts to answer common questions, such as 1) how can we pay for energy upgrades? and 2) how can we assess our current energy use? Trustees, maintenance staff, property staff and others are invited. Prince of Peace Lutheran in partnership with Greater Washington Interfaith Power and Light are sponsors. Gettysburg Offers Training for Pastoral Care with Returning Veterans and Families
Hear from experienced military chaplains, veterans and family members on their challenges and transitional issues at "Pastoral Care of Veterans and Families." This workshop will be held at Valentine Hall Auditorium of Gettysburg Seminary on Wednesday, April 6 from 12:50-4:00 p.m. Pastors and congregations encountering returning veterans and their families within their communities and in search of best practices about how to help them are invited. The event is free and open to the public; pre-registration is recommended. Panels will address "Role of the Church and Pastor" and "In Their Own Words." Small group breakout sessions will explore "Healing from Losses," "Resources," "Family Members," "Healing Three Transform Trauma," and more. Labyrinth Set Up During Lent
On Wednesdays through Holy Week, April 20, all are invited to stop in and walk the labyrinth at St. Albans Episcopal in D.C. (directions at www.st-albans-parish.org) from 1-9:00 p.m. Docents will be available to provide hospitality and guidance. Jazz Band to Perform at The Village
The Village Jazz Band will perform with the 2010-2011 Artist Series hosted by The Village at Rockville - A National Lutheran Community. Campus Ministry Concert Raises Food Pantry Resources
A benefit concert for the Capital Food Bank on May 10 will feature Joyful Noise, sponsored by the Lutheran Student Association at the University of Maryland. and other musicians. Young adults, teens and young at heart are invited to the benefit, "Will Play for Food." Monetary or canned food donations are accepted. Concert Supporting Augusta Victoria Hospital
The Oratorio Choir and Orchestra of St. Luke Lutheran in Silver Spring will present Franz Joseph Haydn's Missa Brevis and Leonard Bernstein's Chichester Psalms on Sunday, April 10 at 5:00 p.m. No admission charge; a free-will offering to benefit Augusta Victoria Hospital in Jerusalem will be received. Local Info Sessions for 2012 ELCA Youth Gathering
There are some important changes in store for the 2012 ELCA Youth Gathering. To help your congregation discern whether or not participation in the Gathering is right for you, pastors and potential youth group leaders are invited to attend an information meeting. Cabaret Recital at The Village
A cabaret-style song recital will showcase Gershwin, Weill, Bernstein and more, featuring Karen Paludan, soprano, as part of the 2010-2011 Artist Series. Cain Hope Felder to Lecture at LTSG
The Rev. Dr. Cain Hope Felder will offer lecture and commentary as the 2011 Martin Luther King Jr. Lecture at Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg (LTSG) on April 13 at 11:45 a.m. The annual lecture program is free and open to the public. Felder is Professor of New Testament Language and Literature and Editor of The Journal of Religious Thought at the Howard University School of Divinity in Washington, D.C. Learn more at www.ltsg.edu.
Train Others in Cancer Prevention
A "Training the Trainers in Cancer Prevention" session will be held at the American Cancer Society [ACS] office in Silver Spring on April 30 from 9:00 a.m.-noon. The session will be led by Dr. Njwen and focus on Prostate, Breast and Colon. "Given the pastoral commitment of the Lutheran churches to the wellbeing of communities, the [ACS] would like to work with your churches' health ministries and men's ministries to address issues related to cancer prevention," writes the Rev. LHS Spring Program Celebrates Muhlenberg Anniversary
The Spring Program of the Lutheran Historical Society-Mid Atlantic is "The Impact of the Muhlenberg Family in America." John E. Preaching Perspective for Summer Sabbaths at LTSG
"Preaching Themes for Summer Sabbaths" will be reviewed through the Preaching Perspectives series offered by the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg. The presentation will take place Thursday, May 19 at LTSG, presented by the Rev. Dr. Brooks Schramm, Professor of Biblical Studies; and Rabbi Carl Choper, Rabbi of the Jewish Home of Greater Harrisburg and Executive Director, The Religion and Society Center. Cost is $30/day. CMEP Conference
"For the Peace of Jerusalem" is the theme of Churches for Middle East Peace (CMEP) 2011 Advocacy Conference on May 22-24. The ELCA is represented on the board of CMEP as a coalition member. The CMEP's national conference will take place at the Hilton in Dupont Circle, and feature plenaries, workshops and a Lobby Day. Fee is $150 for full registration. "Changing the Politics of Hunger" is the theme of Bread for the World's 2011 gathering on June 11-14 here in D.C. Opportunity for Rostered Leaders to Meet with Presiding Bishop, Regional Network
Rostered leaders in the synod are invited to a gathering of rostered leaders across the region to have conversation with ELCA Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson, experience Bible study under the leadership of Dr. Wally Taylor of Trinity Lutheran Seminary, celebrate the diverse ministries on our territory, and talk with other synod leaders about whom you envision living your life of discipleship and leading others to experience the love of Christ tin ways that encourage them to share their faith in daily life. The "Moving Forward with Christ" gathering will take place November 1-2 at the Blair County Convention Center in Altoona, Penn. Conference fee is estimated to be $100 plus overnight housing. Wilderness Trek in Rockies for Youth Directors
Youth Directors from across the country are invited to an experiential journey to explore the impact a wilderness trek can have on faith and the faith formation of youth you work with. The 5-day adventure from August 7-13 will take place in Colorado's Rocky Mountains, filled with backpacking, white water rafting and rock climbing. Daily worship and Bible study, and time for Sacred Silence, are integral to the wilderness experience. Cost is $120. Lutherhostel Offered in Conjunction with Lutheran Summer Music Academy
A Lutherhostel in conjunction with the Lutheran Summer Music (LSM) Academy & Festival will be offered by the Adult Lutherans Organized for Action (ALOA - Editor's note: same initials, new name) at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, on July 20-24. Each day will begin with contemplative music provided by LSM musicians, followed by devotions. Organ, vocal and instrumental recitals and concerts are presented through the week. Lutherhostels to Take in Fall Colors in Wisconsin
Lutherhostels are planned this fall by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and Adult Lutherans Organized for Action (ALOA - see prior reference) at Heartwood Conference Center and Retreat in Trego, Wisconsin. Faith Development Explored at Immersion
Children's faith development is the subject of a 10-day learning immersion at Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp in Colorado, with the partnership of the Rocky Mountain Synod and Wartburg Theological Seminary. Over the course of "PEAK," from Oct. 16-26, participants will construct a theology that regards children as valuable persons, gifted by God for a life and ministry in the Church and God's world. The implications for ministry to and with the children and families in one's congregation and personal life will be explored. The course may be taken for academic credit or CEUs. Book of Faith Initiative Conference
A three-day conference of the ELCA Book of Faith Initiative on April 29-May 1 will bring together lay leaders, teachers, pastors and church staff with resources from Luther Seminary, Augsburg College and Augsburg Fortress. Keynote speakers for the "Book of Faith Jubilee!" include the Rev. Nadia Bolz-Weber, Prof. Craig Koester, John Roberto and Prof. Jessicah Duckworth, and the Rev. Kelly Chatman will be worship leader.  Our Synodical Women's Organization will hold its annual conference on Saturday, May 7 at Lutheran Church of the Abiding Presence in Burke, Virginia. The theme is "Renew, Respond, Rejoice!" Secret Visitor Training to Help Us 'To See Ourselves As Others Do'
 What is it like for a newcomer to walk into the doors of our sanctuary and worship with us for the very first time? Congregations are invited to take part in the Secret Visitor Program - trained teams from your congregation can have that first-time experience by visiting others, and trained teams visiting your congregation can offer gentle feedback that will help us all "To See Ourselves As Others Do," the synod's theme in 2011. Secret Visitor Training on Saturday, May 14 will prepare teams from your congregation. It will run from 10 a.m.-noon at St. John's Lutheran in Rockville. Empower Youth to Work for Social Justice

Continuing Ed for Pastors and Sponsors at Colorado Lodge
Modeled after similar continuing education events for pastors and spouses, Wartburg Theological Seminary's Luther Academy of the Rockies will be held June 20-30 at Meeker Park Lodge in Allenspark, Colorado. CEUs offered. Dr. Dan Olson, Dr. Ann Graham Brock, and the Rev. Rich Melheim will be this year's faculty. Chi Rho for Senior High Youth

Power in the Spirit Conference at Roanoke
Power in the Spirit will be held on the Roanoke College Campus on July 14-16, sponsored by the Virginia Synod. The event is themed, "We Love to Tell the Story." Keynote speaker will be the Rev. Walt Wangerin, the Bible study leader will be the Rev. John Largen, and the musician will be Mr. Kevin Barger. Workshops, a professional storyteller, worship, laugher and fellowship will equip participants to be better Ambassadors for Christ. Lutheran Men in Mission Gathering
The triennial Lutheran Men in Mission (LMM) Gathering will be held July 22-24 in Denver at the Marriott Tech Center Hotel. This two-day event will provide men of all ages with an opportunity to challenge themselves to focus on what is important in their lives. Speakers will include the Rev. Larry Clark, pastor of St. Mark's Lutheran in Chicago; Jay Gamelin, pastor at Jacob's Porch, a campus mission at Ohio State University; Pat Morley, CEO of Man in the Mirror; Lyman Coleman, general editor of the MasterBuilder's Bible for Men and developer of the One Year to Live retreat; and Paul Hill, executive director of Vibrant Faith Ministries.
