Vote to Split $1 Million thru Thrivent Choice
Thrivent ChoiceThere are still a couple of days (two, actually) to direct a ministry donation through the Thrivent Choice program. Members of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans can log on to http://www.thrivent.com/choicevote before May 21 and vote for favorite ministry or charitable organization to receive a portion of $1 million dollars, including ELCA World Hunger, Lutheran Disaster Response, and the Lutheran Malaria Initiative. Top 10 vote getters will receive the donation.

Synod Happenings 
Disaster Preparedness for Congregations
On Saturday, May 22, the final congregational disaster response preparation workshop of the year will be offered at Hope Lutheran in College Park. Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area and the National Capital Presbytery are cosponsoring "Build an Ark! Preparing for Ministry in a Disaster." Cost for lunch and materials is $10/person or $25/ministry team. The day will run from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Knowing the signs of danger and hope, and continuity planning will be discussed. Pentecost Hymn Festival

Potlucks in June to End World Hunger
The 2nd annual Month of Potlucks to End World Hunger is designated for June 2010. Potlucks held during June are a great way for a congregation to engage world hunger from multiple perspectives: fellowship, education, partnership, advocacy and fund raising. "Hunger is a reality, and we can make a move now to eliminate it - both near and far," writes the Rev. LLF Luncheon on Diversity, Uniqueness & Salvation
The Rev. Dr. Terry Reynolds, Associate Professor and Chair, Department of Theology, Georgetown University, will be the presenter at the Lutheran Lay Fellowship (LLF) luncheon on June 3 from noon-2:00 p.m. "Religious Diversity, Christian Uniqueness and the Question of Salvation" will be addressed at St. Luke Lutheran in Silver Spring. Event for High Schoolers Moved to Winter
synod organized activity High school youth will have the opportunity to take place in "Baptized, Called... Sent to Serve," hosted by the synod vocation team, on January 9, 2011, postponed from the originally scheduled spring date. A similarly titled event, "Baptized, Called... Now What?" will be hosted by the synod vocation team for confirmation-age youth in fall of 2011.
Used Book Sale to Benefit HLCEF
A Used Book Sale will be held at Crusader Lutheran in Rockville on Saturday, June 5 from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. in the church Fellowship Hall. All proceeds will go to the Holy Land Christian Ecumenical Foundation in memory of the Rev. Roy Enquist. Donations of books will be accepted at the church beginning May 30th. Local Learning 
CMEP to Hold Advocacy Conference
Churches for Middle East Peace (CMEP), in which the ELCA has membership, will hold an advocacy conference June 13-15 in D.C. Faith leaders, issue analysts and policy experts will provide participants with important insights, resources and skills to effectively express concerns to elected officials and reach out locally to engage others. Bread for the World Lobby Day
Bread for the World's Lobby Day is coming on June 15. Worship, a briefing on issues, and the opportunity to speak to members of Congress and their staff are planned. Protection of the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit, and support for Child Nutrition Reauthorization, are on the radar of the organization, which is a partner with the ELCA Church in Society unit. Asset-Based Community Development Conference
A three-day Asset-Based Community Development Conference will be held at Virginia Theological Seminary on June 17-19. Youth Ministry Certification Course
A certification course designed to equip adults accompanying youth and families in the congregation is offered by the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg (LTSG). Registration deadline for the Youth Ministry Certification School is August 1. The Youth Ministry Certification School is spread over an eight month period to make it more accessible to volunteers and part-time staff. Dates are August 19-22 (at Camp Nawakwa, Arnendtsville, Pennsylvania), October 14-16, November 11-13, February 10-12, March 24-26 and April 28-30 (all at LTSG). Biblical Storytelling
A Biblical Storytelling Workshop led by Tracy Radosevic will be held at Christ Memorial Presbyterian in Columbia, Md. Chi Rho for Senior High Youth
synod organized activity Chi Rho, the synod's annual week-long servant event trip to Neon, Kentucky for senior high youth (those completing grades 9-12 in 2010) is coming on July 11-17. Youth may participate as individuals or as part of a small congregational group. Adults are also needed to serve, and congregations sending four or more youth are asked to also send an adult. Rethinking Stewardship Conference
The ELCA is among the co-sponsors of "Rethinking Stewardship: Our Culture, Our Theology, Our Practices," a workshop reframing how American Christians think about stewardship. Afternoon Sunday School Teachers (p/t)
The Oromo Christian Fellowship, which meets in Kensington, Md., at Resurrection Lutheran, is looking for two Sunday School teachers for their English-speaking children's classes. Class is held from 2-3:00 p.m. on Sundays. These teachers with a helper from the congregation will instruct a group of children of differing ages. Hourly pay is $25/hour.  Teachers are welcome to join worship at 1:00 p.m. for the advantage of exposure to Oromo worship and cultural expression. Contact the Rev. Pre-K Teachers, Curriculum Coordinator (varied)
The Mother's Day Out program at Christ the King Lutheran in Great Falls is looking for several individuals to join the dynamic staff beginning in September 2010. Teachers are needed for a variety of age groups (all under five), as well as a curriculum coordinator to develop pre-K lesson plans. Patience, energy, understanding and creativity to help children reach their potential are necessary.
