Heaven in 2011?

That's what people were saying at the InfoComm 100 last spring. While AV business people tend to be optimistic, the feeling in April was that 2010 would not be the big recovery year but that 2011 would be great. 2010 certainly started slowly, but somehow the second half exploded with work.
Many manufacturers, integrators and programmers have reported that business is booming, despite lagging economic indicators such as job growth. Why? One theory is that we are surfing a pre-recovery, since companies make infrastructure improvements ahead of hiring. Some think it's just pent up backlog being released, much like the post-Katrina surge. Whatever the reason, PepperDash actually had record sales in the second half of 2010, with 19% percent growth year-over-year, and 12% over our best year ever. Wow! I'll take it! That hot selling created a problem for many integrators and programmers, including PepperDash. Suddenly, there weren't enough people to deliver all the work. Like many companies, we went into rapid hiring mode. We added two programmers and a field tech recently, and will soon have a new IT manager. (Thank you to all our clients for your patience while we worked on beefing up our staff! We know it was very difficult on some projects.)
So what else happened in 2010? We opened a fourth office in Chicago, with PepperDash veteran Zachary Paisley relocating to the Windy City. PepperDash made it to the Inc.5000 list for the third year in a row and the Inner City 100 again. The Crestron CAIP Advisory Board made solid progress in its inaugural year, with many of our initiatives expected to bloom in 2011. The InfoComm STEP committee (Sustainable Technology Environment Projects) made great progress on a new model for rating sustainable AV systems.
One of our biggest accomplishments in 2010 is that our intelligent energy management system, Sentegy®, has really taken root. We made it to the regional finals of the Cleantech Open (top 6 of 65 entrants), and were invited to present at the Massachusetts Conference on Clean Energy and the MIT Enterprise Forum as a result. Our studies at The Wharton School and Tufts University are progressing well, and we are hoping go to get version one to market late this year.
So, 2010 turned out pretty well after all. If 2011 is better, it will be heaven indeed.

Title: Control Systems Programmer Tell us about your job:I write the code, man. (kidding!) While I do spend a decent amount of time actually writing code for projects, the majority of my work involves me being onsite to install or implement code that's already been written. What aspect of your job interests you the most? I do love to get things working. Delving into a problem and coming up with a clever or creative solution is where I really begin to enjoy my work. I also revel in writing code that exists just above the hardware level. It is very rewarding to actually see something move or tangibly change state because of a program I've written. How does AV personally affect you?I thrive on music. I have been known to sit for hours and critically listen to a piece of music. I love that I can do that with recorded music and a decent system to listen to it on. It wasn't a hundred years ago that in order to listen to any music, one had to go out and find someone (or some people) to play the music or play it himself. What's the most high tech gadget that you own? Lately, I'd have to say it's my phone, a Droid2 Global. Daily, I am almost mystified at how much this little contraption can do. Need to know who won the 1953 World Series, or what the weather in Baltimore will be tomorrow, or how to get from Penn Station to Red Cat, or what the price of a flight to Bangor, ME is all while on the phone? No problem, this little thing has got it covered.Best Advice:Freeze specifications. A project can be positively smooth-going if the finish line is a known and little-changing quality. You can reach Vincent by email: vlongano@pepperdash.com.
