Ten Years And Just Getting Warmed Up!

July is forever embedded in the American psyche as the month
to celebrate independence. This
especially resonates with us, as Independent Programmers. Here are a few InfoComm10 highlights for us
to celebrate this July...
First, congratulations to David Diamond, of Diamond
Sound Productions, Lynchburg, VA, winner
of our InfoComm10 Apple iPad
give-away. Visitors to our Crestron GUI
Gallery kiosk who dropped off their business card had a chance to win a new
iPad. Visitors were also treated to a
fantastic new layout this year, featuring a vast corral-style space, table seating
and demos from 18 of the industry's best independent programming
companies. Hope you are enjoying your
new iPad, David!
The InfoComm AV
Sustainability Task Force rolled out the new Sustainable Technology
Environment Performance (STEP). STEP is a
comprehensive new way to measure sustainability across all phases of an AV
project, from manufacturing, to planning, to our favorite area: energy
efficiency. We are very happy that
InfoComm has included independent programmers on the STEP team, including yours
truly, because it speaks to the high level of importance of software in modern
AV solutions. For a copy of the most
recent STEP rating system draft, click here.
Crestron EVP Randy
Klein underscored his strategic vision for the future of Crestron Authorized
Independent Programmers by introducing the Crestron CAIP Advisory Board (CAB) at an InfoComm meeting of the CAIP community. The rapidly growing importance of software in
Crestron's progressive, long-term Integrated Building Technology strategy will
continue to create new opportunities for CAIPs who have demonstrated ingenuity
and a dedication to quality. I am honored to be the inaugural Chair of this new
Board, and to have a hand in shaping the increasingly critical role of
independent programmers.
Speaking of ingenuity
and dedication to quality, what's a better symbol of freedom and independence
than New York City? We were delighted
to find out that the New York City Hall Situation Room project won the 2010 Spotlight Award for Best Government AV Project (State & Local).
PepperDash programmed this amazing command and control
center, partnered with integrator AVI-SPL and designer Shen Milsom Wilke. The
awards are determined by PRO AV and ARCHITECT magazine in conjunction with
InfoComm International. So what's this about ten years? Well, PepperDash turns 10
today. Now that's worth celebrating!

Title: Control Systems Programmer
Tell us about
your job: I am a beacon of hope in a sea of wires.
What aspect of your job interests you the most? I think for most AV folks it's the gear that
interests them the most. Honestly, for
me, it's the experience - traveling to large cities and remote outposts,
getting to visit famous buildings, seeing the innards of notable companies, and
being able to say 'oh, I've been there...'
How does AV personally affect you? I came from a filmmaking/cinematography
background and have always been a big movie guy. I got into AV only after pursuing that
niche and seeing better opportunities within what I do now. Ultimately, I think it was a wise choice.
3 Favorite Movie Scenes: 1) The scene in which 'blind girl' sees the tramp
for the first time in City Lights
2) The subway/car chase in The French Connection
3) The final scene in the The Piano Teacher
Best Advice: Understand the hardware. Understand what it can and can't do. Understand that I can't make it do something
it can't. Make the user understand.
