Apple Turns Up The Heat
|
So I just bought my son a MacBook to take back to college.
That makes two Macs in my house now. Clearly, I am going soft.
Always a PC guy, I used to fear supporting Macs on my home network. As an IT manager (in a previous life), my techs used to complain about
supporting "the graphic people" and their Macs. Now I nag our CTO about when we
can ALL get Macs.
Apple recently announced that its Mac sales were up 33% year-over-year.
THIRTY-THREE percent? In the worst
recession in how long? Clearly, there is a wake-effect from iPhone/iPod Touch
sales, pulling people into Mac stores and seducing them with delicious graphics
and outright coolness. ~50 million iPhone/iPod
Touch users and countless wanna-haves are now accustomed to really pretty graphics.
More relevant to AV, all those iPhone/iPod Touch holders are
used to really beautiful touch interface graphics. Apple has
demonstrated that a beautiful touch interface really is important. Those users are coming to expect it from their other
touch interfaces too, including AV control touch panels.
Now those AV users also have iPad's to look at, which make Sony
Reader, Kindle, and even B&N's Nook look stale and tired, and which will raise
expectations about pretty control interfaces. It's not enough to be functional
anymore; AV control touch panels have to be beautiful.
This is an irreversible movement. Beautiful AV control touch
panels are a huge value-add, regardless of which hardware you use. Will the iPad be the touch panel of the
future? Who can say? But with Apple raising the bar again, it's no
longer enough to have good programmers.
Now you really do need high quality graphic designers on your team too.

Title: Control Systems Programmer and Graphic Designer Tell us about your job:I do a little bit of this and a little bit of that. I code Crestron control systems, usually for mid-to-large sized commercial projects and occasionally produce custom graphics for those projects. What aspect of your job interests you the most?
Unlike most other coding jobs, the results of your code actually do stuff in the real world! Physical things turn on and move! It's more exciting than operating in a virtuality. How does AV personally affect you?
I love listening to music and any technology that exposes me to new artists or allows me to bring my music with me is great! I'm finding lots of new music these days on Pandora on my Blackberry.
