PepperDash News - A higher level of control
September 2009
The IT department is our new customer.

The recent rebranding of Southern Business Communications, owned by Xerox Corporation for two years prior, signifies that Xerox recognizes the enormity of the AV opportunity. The launch of Xerox Audio Video Solutions is an obvious clue about who our new customer is. It is Xerox's customer: the IT department.

Xerox is a $17.6 billion global IT product and services company. When companies like Xerox (and Cisco, a ~$40 billion IT company) muscle into a niche industry, it's not a niche any longer. These companies bring gigantic brand recognition to their AV offerings, easily recognized by IT personnel everywhere.  But they also bring a vast network of sales and marketing representatives, who are deeply embedded in those IT departments, and carrying an enterprise viewpoint that cannot be matched in our industry. IT consumers will be very comfortable turning to these companies for AV help, because they are already familiar with them.

What to do? AV companies must learn how the IT department works: budgeting, maintenance, asset management, security, vernacular, the works. Hire IT technicians and IT sales teams. Partner with IT manufacturers and service providers, or acquire them. Accept that the world is changing around us, and that we need to change, or become obsolete.

PepperDash Profile: Chadd Bailey
Chadd BaileyTitle: Control Systems Programmer

Tell us about your job:

Program control systems, supervise code frameworks and manage projects.

What aspect of your job interests you the most?
Developing new templates because it lets me think creatively...and you can only program so many conference rooms.

How did you get started in the AV industry/control systems programming?
I graduated Northeastern University with a programming degree. With that, I answered a Craig's List ad and stumbled upon a small company doing some interesting work. In the 5 years I've been here, I'm glad to see PepperDash grow from an apartment to multiple offices.

What's the most high tech gadget that you own?
My home computer. Not very high tech, but I do everything on it.

Favorite Bar:
The Squealing Pig (or just "the Pig"). Good food, beer, Irish folk music.

3 Favorite Movies:
Boondock Saints
BASEketball
Army of Darkness

Best Advice: Define the scope of the control system as best you can up front, because it's hard to change later in the project cycle.
