PepperDash News - A higher level of control
February 2009
Smart Green Control™

Energy Management has become a defining issue for 2009. It's very trendy, indeed.  The AV industry consumes more than its fair share of wattage, so we need to look for ways to reduce consumption and improve efficiency.  Judging from the recent efforts of consultants, manufacturers and trade organizations that message has sunk in, and Green AV is going to be big.

Everyone is attempting to gauge the economic impact of Energy Management, hoping that it spells relief from our economic woes. Energy consumers want to save money and reduce their "carbon footprint"; everyone else wants to figure out how to "monetize greenness".  But how complicated a challenge is this?

According to Paul Shahriari, CEO of Greenmind and Co-Chair of the Greenbuild Steering Committee, however, one need not over-think it.  Simply swapping incandescent for compact fluorescent bulbs in your home, for example, brings an astonishing return on investment.  So what are the obvious considerations in the AV world?  How about rack heat?  Systems on in empty rooms? Systems on overnight?

PepperDash has long put simple scheduled shut-down features in our code.  But that's just the start.  Advanced scheduling features, configurable locally by system users or via remote management systems, allow fine tuning.  Occupancy sensors and light sensors can take the formula to a new level.  I was very excited when Crestron recently announced a line of cost-effective sensors as part of their Green Light™ initiative.  With such sensors, you can monitor a room and make intelligent Energy Management decisions, not only deactivating unneeded devices but even balancing external and internal illumination.

Here are a few things that Smart Green Control™ can accomplish....
  1. Fully power off all equipment not actively in use.
  2. Keep slow-to-boot equipment in energy efficient "sleep" modes during hours when they might be used, but fully powered off at other times.
  3. Use occupancy sensors with programming logic to power down or trigger sleep mode in items left on by users who have vacated the room.
  4. Actively balance sunlight and electric light to optimize illumination for a given purpose by using sensors, window treatments and lighting fixtures (keeping safety and convenience in mind, of course).
Green AV is here.  Let's make the most of it!

PepperDash Profile: Sumanth Rayancha
Sumanth Rayancha
Title:CTO / Vice President

Tell us about your job:

I am responsible for delivering very large projects, setting the overall technical direction of the company, and managing our IT infrastructure.

How did you get started in the AV industry / control systems programming?
I programmed a low end Crestron STS system for a friend of mine.  That snowballed into working on his new home which has over 60 zones of distributed audio.  That experience, among many others along the way, lead me to where I am now.

What aspect of your job interests you the most? Why?
The most interesting part of my job is working on projects that involve things that have never been done before.  I find it very satisfying to be able to pull off things that people aren't sure can be done, or are even convinced cannot be done.

What's the most high tech gadget that you own?
My Wilson Audio Watt/Puppys.  They're not an electronic gadget (although I own many of those) but the tens of thousands of man hours of R&D put in to developing them make them very "High Tech" in my book.

Describe your dream home theatre:
Sony SXRD 4K projector with a custom Snell and Wilcox processor, Wilson Audio Alexandria and Watch speakers, 8 Krell Evolution Two preamplifiers driving 8 Krell Evolution One mono-block amplifiers.  A custom server running proprietary Dolby and DTS software to decode movie sound tracks outputting the signal via a Lynx-16 card to a stack of Benchmark DA converters.

Best Advice: Finish every project and make sure the customer is satisfied.
