Welcome to the second edition of the Northern Illinois Public Health Consortium's online newsletter. This issue features a handful of accomplishments and awards earned by several NIPHC members. We congratulate our public health colleagues for their leadership and expertise sought after on state and national levels.
Regionalization and NIPHC Featured in Public Health Reports
NIPHC Executive Director Dr. Patrick Lenihan was recently published in the July/ August 2008 online edition of Public Health Reports. The informative and relevant article, "Regionalization in Local Public Health Departments: The Northern Illinois Public Health Consortium," was seen by public health professionals across the country.

The Lake County Health Department Receives Three Impressive Awards
 
The Lake County Health Department receives the Excellence in Public Health Award from the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO).

During the Oct. 2008 
National Public Health Information Coalition annual conference in San Antonio, Leslie Piotrowski of the Lake County Health Department received the 2008 Bronze Award for Excellence in Public Health Communication for In-House Special Audio/ Visual Projects. Leslie received the award for co-producing the summer edition of "Lake County Health Focus," a 30-minute cable television show geared to provide Lake County residents with a better perspective about their health and the health of their community. The series features nutrition tips, health facts, restaurant highlights and discussions with Health Department staff.
Theresa HeatonVisiting Nurse Association Foundation of Chicago honors Theresa Heaton
The Kane County Health Department and the Visiting Nurses Association Foundation are pleased to announce that Theresa Heaton has been named the 2008 runner-up of the VNA Foundation's 2008 Super Star in Community Nursing Award. Theresa is the Director of the Family Health Division at the Kane County Health Department and serves as chair of the NIPHC Illinois Department of Human Services Committee. She earned the award for her exceptional work in the prenatal care arena and throughout her career as an advocate for public health in Kane County, as well as in the state of Illinois.

Public Health Leaders from the NIPHC Region Present at the Annual APHA Meeting

The knowledge and expertise of NIPHC members were recently showcased at the annual American Public Health Association (APHA) Annual Meeting in October. Several NIPHC members, mentioned below, presented at the scientific sessions.

Webcast of Interest
The North Carolina Institute for Public Health and the Public Health Leadership Institute will present the first in a series of discussions, "Public Health Survival: Leadership in a Falling Market," on Monday, December 15. A panel of public health leaders will talk about the issues surrounding operating public health systems in a down economy, share illustrative experiences, emphasize ways to anticipate and measure influences, and identify new strategies and networks to continue the work of public health.

NIPHC is excited to cosponsor the Illinois Public Health Association (IPHA) 68th Annual Meeting, along with other organizations such as the Illinois Association of Public Health Administrators. Please save the date for the IPHA Annual Meeting, which will be held April 28-30, 2009 at the Indian Lakes Resort in Bloomingdale, Illinois.
