 Texas Completes First "Schools To Watch" Training
In its continuing effort to replicate the programs and practices of outstanding middle grades, the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform has selected Texas to implement its acclaimed "Schools to Watch" program. Texas was chosen after a competitive selection process in which the state team demonstrated the capacity, commitment, and vision to partner with the Forum to establish the program.
For days in May, 20 middle level experts from around the state met in Arlington, Texas to take part in the first Schools to Watch Training.

America's Top Ten Youth for 2010 Announced Ten middle and high school students have been named America's top youth volunteers for 2010 at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. They received $6,000 cash prizes, engraved gold medallions, crystal trophies for their schools and $5,000 grants from The Prudential Foundation for the charities of their choice. Vast Majority of Students Meet Promotion Requirements AUSTIN - An overwhelming majority of fifth and eighth-grade students have passed the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) reading and math tests, which means they met the state promotion requirements that are tied to the testing program. Statewide test results released today show that 91 percent of eighth-grade students passed the TAKS reading test and 80 percent passed the TAKS mathematics test. Read the rest of the story.
Updated Best Practices Clearinghouse Released AUSTIN - The Texas Education Agency today launched a redesigned Best Practices Clearinghouse (BPC) Web site that includes a range of dynamic new features such as a searchable database and additional research information.

Texas Lawmakers Discuss Easing Public School Class Size Limit to Cut Costs By TERRENCE STUTZ / The Dallas Morning News tstutz@dallasnews.com AUSTIN - One of the oldest standards in Texas public schools - the strict limit on the size of elementary classes - could fall victim to the state's expected revenue crunch next year.
