Texas Middle School Association Newsletter
Issue: # 2 September / October 2008
Dear Middle School Educator,

Many of our friends and TMSA family members have been affected by the devastation of Hurricane Ike.  Our hearts and prayers go out to everyone affected by the storm as they now deal with the monumental recovery efforts.  We know the healing and rebuilding process may be slow, but we also know that Texans are resilient and strong, and we are confident that these communities will rebuild, bigger and better than ever.

As you know, our 34th Annual Conference and Exhibit is scheduled for March 5-7, 2009 at the Galveston Island Convention Center at the San Luis Resort.  We will be speaking with the Galveston Convention and Visitors Bureau soon and will be updating you on any changes to our conference programing.

We feel that Galveston is a good fit for TMSA and we look forward to holding our conference there this March.  We know it will be our biggest, best conference ever.  Our featured speakers include Dr. Marcia Tate, Jack Berckemeyer, Monte Selby, Paul Slocumb, Ruben Perez, Rita Pierson, Diana Day and Debbie Silver.

 Download our early registration form now.

To our friends in Galveston, know that you are in our thoughts and we're just a phone call away.  We look forward to working with you all soon.

October is Month of the Young Adolescent

October is Month of the Young Adolescent, an annual international collaborative effort of education, health, and youth-oriented organizations. Initiated by National Middle School Association (NMSA), Month of the Young Adolescent brings together a wide range of organizations to focus on the needs of this important age range, ages 10 to 15. The key messages for the celebration are:

  • The importance of parents being knowledgeable about young adolescents and being actively involved in their lives;
  • The understanding that healthy bodies plus healthy minds equal healthy young adolescents;
  • The realization that the education young adolescents experience during this formative period of life will, in large measure, determine the future for all citizens; and
  • The knowledge that every young adolescent should have the opportunity to pursue his or her dreams and aspirations, and post-secondary education should be a possibility for all.
