Greetings!

Are you always in a receiving mode? For blessings, that is?  Do you have a humble, teachable spirit? Do you consider yourself a channel through whom others are also blessed?

It is truly commendable if in fact you are like that person described above. But who is like that ideal person?  Those attributes will go a long way when you attend the Jesus Seminar that starts this coming Friday. Better yet, those character traits can become yours as you listen and learn from the messages contained in the series.

The Holy Spirit will use you to invite others to come to the meetings, and to become not only a role model but a role player in bringing Jesus to those who may not know Him yet, or who may not know Him more intimately.

Seminars start on Friday

Pastor John Tulio

The Jesus Seminar series will begin this coming Friday evening, May 4,  at 7:30 p.m. Senior Pastor John Tulio will conduct a total of nine seminars on who Jesus of the Bible is. These will be held Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays on three consecutive weekends. The times are in the bannerhead above.

Friday's topic is "The Son of God:  Why Jesus Came." On Saturday it's "In the Image of God: Why Jesus Became a Man" and on Sunday it's "Bridging the Gap: Why We Need Jesus."

The catch phrase "Debt Eraser" stems from the huge sacrificial role that Jesus took in erasing the debt of sin for humanity when He died on the cross of Calvary.

Core Group Meeting

Hear About PHL Network

There is a Core Group Meeting on Sunday, May 6, at 2:00 p.m. Pastors John and Jessie will give us the latest update on the progress of our missionary outreach in the Philippines.

The church staff heard bits and pieces of it at the staff meeting earlier today, and the message is upbeat, wonderful, energizing, and simply inspirational in the sense that one can't help but realize how God through the Holy Spirit works in making things happen the way they do.  The contacts they have made and the networking that continues to develop among several independent groups is amazing, and can only be explained by His supernatural intervention.

Please make every effort to attend this meeting.
Flyers Available

Bring them to your neighbor's doors

A few hundred invitation flyers are still available for distribution.  Several of you have volunteered to take these flyers door-to-door in neighborhoods close to Gospel Life Community since last Sunday.  Others have continued to distribute them in the last couple of days and their supplies (the flyers) are about gone.

Approximately 3600 residences in Walnut and West Covina were invited through a mail program we did last week to six carrier routes in the 91789 and 91792 zip codes.  Another 1600  flyers have been or are being delivered by hand to the surrounding community.

If you need more flyers, they are at the church foyer.  Please call before you come to pick extra flyers up to make sure someone can let you in during usual office hours, or come when there is an evening meeting going on in church, like tonight, Wednesday.
Greeters Needed

During the Seminars, Too

Our church greeters will be welcoming both our guests and our local congregants to the seminars in the next three weekends. Your help is needed to assist as greeters for the duration of the seminars or to become part of the group of greeters on a regular basis.

They are an important part of what people's initial impression of us as a church is. So this is a challenging and yet a rewarding ministry. Please let us know if you are able to volunteer as a church greeter, at least on a temporary basis.

You do not have to be a couple to be a greeter.

Sacred Versus Secular

The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it (Gen. 2:15).

Imagine for a moment that Jesus has just completed his three years of training with the disciples. He has been crucified and is now commissioning the twelve to go into the world and disciple the nations. Now imagine him also making this statement to them.

"Dear brothers, it is now time for you to share what you have learned from me. However, as you share with others be sure that you keep what I taught you separate from your work life. The principles I have shared with you only apply in situations outside your work life. Do not make them fit into this context. The miracles you saw in me can only be done in certain situations outside work life. Keep this in mind when thinking about praying for the sick or the lost. These truths will not work in the marketplace."

Sound preposterous? It may, but this is the mindset of many in our world today. The spiritual does not mix with the everyday world of the workplace. "What happens on Monday has no relationship to what takes place on Sunday," they say.

These are the thoughts expressed so much in our day and time, although they are not expressed in such direct terms. Let's think more about this idea. When Jesus came to earth, how did He come? He came as a carpenter. He was a man given to work with his hands and to provide an honest service to his fellow man. He did not come as a priest, although He was both a King and a Priest (Rev. 1:6 KJV). When it came time to recruit those for whom the Church would be founded, He chose twelve men from the workplace - a fisherman, a tax collector, a doctor, and so on.

They all came from the workplace. None of his disciples were priests from the synagogue, a natural place to recruit from if you were going to start a religious movement. Jesus called them all from the marketplace of life. Was this any accident that Jesus called men and women from the marketplace to play such a vital role in His mission? I think not.

Today, embrace your work life as a holy calling.

Meditation

"Oh Dear Lord, Thank You for your promises! Thank You for opening Your arms and welcoming me to come to You, to find rest in You, to find freedom in You, to have abundant life in You.

"I cry out to You now for those who are heavy on my heart, for those who are going through the fire and those who are going through the valleys; for those who face difficulties and those who have come through trials and are triumphant because of You.

"Thank You for Your grace and mercy, Your peace and love, Your hand upon their lives. Thank You for miracles and ministries. I pray that all who are weary will cry out to You and trust You. And I thank You so much for all that You have done and all that You will do. Thank You that Your works and miracles in our lives can be a witness to the world that You are God. May You be glorified and souls be saved. In the name of Jesus I pray, amen."
