Greetings!

Counting one's blessings can be an opportunity to develop a greater sense of compassion.  Knowing what abundance one has in his or her own life can encourage liberality towards others, borne out of one of the fundamental reasons for most acts of stewardship: gratitude for the abundance one has been given.

Freely we receive; freely we should give. "Whenever you did one of these things to someone overlooked or ignored, that was me--you did it to me." (Matthew 25:40 MSG)

WALNUT FAMILY FESTIVAL

Interest or Commitment?

At our Core Group Meeting last week, most everyone who was present raised his or her hand to signify that we will participate in this year's 35th Walnut Family Festival.  You agreed that we would take part in the parade and Tony Luciano was "drafted" to organize and get us ready for this.

We expect to have as many of you who raised your hands to actually be in the parade.  It will be quite pathetic if only a handful will show up.

On the next couple of Sundays, we will ask you to indicate your commitment for this event by signing up on a sheet that will be passed around. We need to see as many of you as possible joining the team.

Besides the parade, Gospel Life will have a display booth in the "non-profit organizations area" and a separate youth booth in the "games area" of the festival. We will offer the blood pressure and diabetic testing and counseling clinic again. We will need volunteers to man our booths and our healthcare team to help with the clinic.

For those interested, there is also a 5K/10K Run, live continuous entertainment on two stages, food court, children's area and crafters all over the festival grounds, which will be in Suzanne Park, at 625 Suzanne Road in Walnut between La Puente Road and Fuerte Drive.

Information on the 5K/10K Run can be obtained from Chris McBurney at (909) 595-9980. The festival is scheduled for Saturday, October 8.

SOUND SYSTEM

Booth Nearing Completion

 Current AV SystemUnfinished Sound Booth

Current Audio-Visual Equipment    The Sound Booth (Under Construction)

Our sound system is now relocated at the far right rear corner of the church sanctuary.  The entire system was transferred from the church's mezzanine level.

Construction of the "sound booth" continues and is nearing completion.  The electrical conduits and wirings are now in place. It's the finishing touches that take time.

Components of the sound system will be refurbished as funds become available.  This is the purpose of our monthly fund raising dinners, the next of which is on Tuesday, August 30, at 7:30 p.m.  We will go Maxim Cafe at 18904 E. Gale Ave. (Gale Ave. & Nogales St) in Rowland Heights.

Please call Johnny or Nellie Chua (909) 228-2162 to make your dinner reservations and please make your menu choices at the time you make your reservations.

DEVOTIONAL

My dear children, you come from God and belong to God. You have already won a big victory over those false teachers, for the Spirit in you is far stronger than anything in the world. 1 John 4:4 (MSG)

"Jesus' goal is not to condemn us for our distrust; rather, it is to expose our faulty beliefs so we will abandon them and move deeper into our relationship with him."

Our lives in Christ are meant to be extraordinary, incredible, meaningful and purposeful but never trouble-free. God keeps you in the pressure-cooker of life so others can see how a life connected to Jesus confronts problems in a very different way than a life that is disconnected from Jesus.

We are empowered by the Holy Spirit and that gives us the ability to respond to hardship like people from the kingdom of heaven -- not like people seemingly abandoned by God or in rebellion to God or unaware of God or unrepentant before God.

When we think God is not involved in our circumstances, we respond with problems with defensiveness, blame, shame, anger, hatred, pride, fear and self-centeredness. Anybody can do that. Anybody not connected to Jesus.

Jesus will have none of that and so he pushes us to a choice: Do you trust that I am involved in your circumstances or not?

When we respond from our human nature, instead of submitting to the divine nature working within us, we expose a deep, inner distrust of Jesus. Our actions show we believe him incapable of understanding the stress and danger of life (a bold belief considering Jesus died hanging on the cross).

On the other hand, when we respond from the truth that we are connected to Jesus, we prove that we believe "he that is within us is greater than he who is in the world." (1 John 4:4)

Jesus' goal is not to condemn us for our distrust; rather, it is to expose our faulty beliefs so we will abandon them and move deeper into our relationship with him.

MEDITATION

"Dear God, I thank You for being the Rock of my salvation. I thank You that my life can be built upon such a strong foundation. Please help me to trust, to live, to take every breath based upon the foundation I have in You.

"Help me to weather life's storms, to keep looking to You, and to be a thankful child...never a pouting brat.  Strengthen me and keep my feet steady on solid ground.

"I pray for my family members, Lord, that each one will be committed to You and live a life that glorifies You and ministers to others. In the blessed name of Jesus I pray, amen."
