WEDNESDAY EDITION August 17, 2011
|
Greetings! On Monday we mentioned that Jesus is our model and example as we minister to others and that we need to know who we are and who we belong to in order to be confident in ministry. By understanding that God creates each of us to be unique, we can engage in ministry without comparing ourselves to or copying others.
What was Jesus' motivation for ministry? Was it to please himself? No. Other people? No. To be popular? No. To make a lot of money? No. Ego strokes? No. He said, "I do it to please the Father."
In our ministry, we have to clarify who or what we are serving? We have to do this up front. Ministry is too costly to be initiated by the wrong motive. We have to have the right motive when we serve Jesus or we will not last for the long haul.
What is the right motive? "I seek not to please myself but him who sent me." (John 5:30b NIV) During His entire earthly life, Jesus dedicated Himself to pleasing God.

BACK TO SCHOOL!
| |
Our children have either just started or are soon to start the school year all over again.
Let's make sure they are properly instructed on safety, good behavior and conduct, and what to do in case of emergencies.
Provide them with ID tags and phone numbers to call you both at home and at work when needed.

SPEAK FOR YOURSELF
A Tip in Participation r
Have you ever thought about or actually offered someone else's services before asking that person if he or she cared to do so? Did you think someone "ought to be" in a certain church ministry or department and wondered why that someone isn't? It would be easy to jump into unfounded conclusions, won't it? But perhaps if we knew that this particular person had already been asked, talked to or interviewed and for some reason this person preferred not to be tapped for this or that ministry, then we won't be so fast making a judgment, would we? It takes determination and dedication to do a certain ministry or service. We cannot determine that for someone else. If anyone desires to join certain church ministries please do not hesitate to talk with the ministry leader(s) to see if your ideas and theirs are actually compatible and can be used positively to give glory to God. There may be prerequisites that you are unaware of. It will be good to know what they are. "...Fix your thoughts on what is true and honorable and right. Think about things that are pure and lovely and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned from me and heard from me and saw me doing, and the God of peace will be with you." (Philippians 4:8 NLT) |
MORE ON THE CORE GROUP MEETING
Leadership Team
One of the important items taken up during last Sunday's Core Group Meeting was the matter of transitioning into a collective team of leaders who will be the Leadership Team of Gospel Life. As our Lead Ministers John and Jessie Tulio take up more responsibility in the Global Outreach of Gospel Life (GOGL), they will relinquish the leadership role at the local church.
The Leadership Team will consist of the following: Joanna Alano, Executive Minister; Harley Hansel Orzame, Minister for Nurture; Conrad Miranda IV, Minister for Fellowship and Outreach; Tony Luciano, Minister for Discipleship; and Leonard (LJ) Dijamco, Jr., Assistant Minister (Youth Ministry and Church Campus Care Ministry).
The description of the work that each member of the Leadership Team carries is divided into Planning and Development, Responsibility and Oversight, and Execution and Evaluation of the various ministries/departments/programs assigned to each one.
A delineation of the areas of responsibility is provided which makes it more definitive as to who is in charge of what aspect of church work may be in consideration. Each one in the Leadership Team is to be in consultation with the other members of the team when important matters are being considered. Responsibility in areas that overlap will be shared.
Pastors John and Jessie will remain as Senior Ministers for Gospel Life.

GIFT BOXES
Your Donations Count
Six large balikbayan boxes went out by LBC freight to Palawan yesterday, containing the clothes, shoes and various other items that you have donated. These items are received with joy and thankfulness by our people over there. They are worth sending despite the cost of freight.
We'd like to remind all donors to make sure that the used clothes they bring in are cleaned and laundered, properly folded with no tears or holes in them. Shoes must be cleaned and fumigated. Beddings are also needed. Please DO NOT BRING winter clothes or otherwise thick coats, overcoats or any clothes for cold weather.

SOUND BOOTH UPDATE
Work continues this week on the sound booth at the right rear corner of Gospel Life's church sanctuary. Ernie Jordan and Pastor John were working on it as they put the finishing touches not only on the carpentry part of the project but also on the electrical system. Fred Lohmann and Royal Garcia have likewise been volunteering their services to help finish the booth soon. Jason Alano has been helping, too.
Meanwhile, Johnny and Nellie Chua continue to coordinate the monthly fundraising dinner to help upgrade components of the sound system. Dinner is at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 30, at Maxim Cafe located at 18904 Gale Avenue (Gale Ave. and Nogales St.) in Rowland Heights. Please make your reservations with Johnny or Nellie at (909) 228-2162 soon. (See collage of photos taken at the last fundraising dinner posted at the church foyer and in the Fellowship Hall.)

Knowing When to Quit
"Then the LORD opened Balaam's eyes, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the road with his sword drawn. So he bowed low and fell facedown" (Num 22:27-31). Have you ever wanted something so badly that your perception of the situation became distorted? We can force situations so much that we lose perspective. The Israelites were defeating all their enemies in the Promised Land. Balak, the king of Moab, feared that they would be defeated by the Israelites. Balaam was a prophet of the Lord in whom Balak knew had the power to bless or curse a nation. So, he sent a delegation to get Balaam to curse the nation of Israel. Balaam wanted to do this for a nice fee that would come with his cooperation. However, God was not pleased. "But God said to Balaam, 'Do not go with them. You must not put a curse on those people, because they are blessed'" (Num 22:12). Balaam was not being obedient to the Lord because he proceeded with his plan. And this was displeasing to the Lord. God sent an angel to stop him and would it not have been for his "talking donkey" he would have been killed by the angel. In the workplace, we can become driven to achieve. Corporate pressure drives executives to make decisions that can impact many people. We become deceived by the need to succeed at any cost in our venture. In order to achieve Godly success, we must be sensitive to those around us who can give input to the direction we may be taking. God will confirm His direction in our lives if we are willing to accept input from those around us. It can come through a spouse, a co-worker, a boss, a secretary or any other person. Be aware of situations that encourage you to press too hard for a particular outcome. Achieving goals should be a result of following the actions you believe God leads you to take. Let results become a fruit of your strategic actions. (Today God Is First (TGIF) devotional message, Copyright by Os Hillman, Marketplace Leaders) |

MEDITATION
"Dear God, I know that You have a plan for my life. Sometimes, I'm not sure I'm following the right path that will fulfill Your perfect will. I pray that You will give me discernment to make the right choices, and to recognize when You place someone in my life to give direction and point out truths that will prepare me for the path I am to follow and the circumstances I am to face.
"Lord, please give me strength, grace, and unction from on high to not turn back either to one side or the other, but to remain focused straight ahead on You. In Jesus' name, amen."
