August 15, 2011
Greetings!

Every Christian, by virtue of believing and accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior in his or her life, is a minister to others, in some shape or form. To become an effective minister to our family members, friends or neighbors, and even to strangers, one only has to look to Jesus as model and example.

"Why am I in ministry?" one might ask. Or, "What motivates me to be a minister to others?"

Let's contemplate on this matter awhile, because we need to know who we are and who we belong to  so that we can all be confident as we minister to those around us.

PASTOR JOANNIE : "AWE-FULL" WORSHIP
JoannaAlanoPastor Joannie Alano spoke during the Good News Hour yesterday on this month's theme, Worship.  She emphasized how our worship must be full of awe and reverence, while defining to us what awe and reverence truly mean. She also reminded us that we worship through God's invitation, commensurate with the revelation we receive from Him.

Intimacy and awe are inseparable, she told us, and that man's encounter with the glory of God always leaves man awestruck which can result in a "facedown worship" or worship in "sacred silence."

Pastor Joannie is a lawyer and an ordained minister.  She is Gospel Life's Minister for Administration.

FUND RAISING
Reservations are now being received for our monthly fund raising dinner event, to benefit Gospel Life's upgrade of its sound system.

The planned dinner is scheduled for Tuesday, August 30, at the Maxim  Cafe at 18904 E. Gale Ave. in Rowland Heights (at the corner of Gale Ave. and Nogales St.).

We are staying with Maxim Cafe as many of you indicated you liked the quality and quantity of food served there.  The cost is $20 per person, half of which goes to the Fund Drive.  Please make your reservation with Johnny or Nellie Chua at (909) 228-2162. You can make your menu choices at the time you make your reservation.

ATTENDANCE MATTERS

Were you at the Core Group Meeting yesterday?  What if we told you we are not going to let you know what went on in that meeting? Well, you wouldn't know, kuha mo? (do you get it?)

Attendance matters, whether you like it or not.  Plus, even if we wrote about what went on and you read about it, you still wouldn't capture the expressions, the emotions, the gesticulations that accompanied all that was said and done at the meeting.

We had a fairly good attendance at yesterday's meeting. Thirty-one to be exact, about a quarter of the number present during the Good News Hour. Maybe, perhaps, not sure, only surmising that you didn't get the numerous announcements from the church podium and from several issues of the newsletter, with at least one final reminder by e-mail last Saturday.

When you do not get the full import of all the proceedings from our meeting, the following summaries notwithstanding, there is no one else to blame.

SEPTEMBER: MONTH FOR FASTING AND PRAYER
September is designated by the Core Group as the month for fasting and prayer as it relates to our mortgage note which becomes due in May, 2012.

We were told of options that we are currently working on.  Our present noteholder has notified us that our loan will not be renegotiated or extended.

We were also reminded of our journey as a church, Gospel Life Community, how many different truly miraculous events have taken place to the point in our present history, things and circumstances that cannot be attributed to coincidence or happenstance, but rather to God's direct intervention.

We are asked to pick and choose a date or dates in September that we as individuals may spend in fasting and prayer.  The whole second week of that month will see daily evening meetings for intercessory prayer to be held here at Gospel Life.

Sunday, September 11, will be the day designated for our corporate fasting and prayer as a church unit.  On that day, there will be no Fellowship Lunch. No food will be served or eaten in the church campus. The Fellowship Hall will be closed.

Those who are unable to fast for physical or medical reasons should plan to have their lunch off campus and return afterwards to rejoin the others in prayer and meditation.

AN INTERESTING OPTION
No, this is NOT a promotion for a cruise. But we have been talking lately about options that we as a church will need to look at in order to take care of our mortgage note when it becomes due.

Pastor John says someone came to explain a program that will help redeem our mortgage note. It is better that this person comes to talk with us about this plan.  A meeting for this purpose will be arranged.

A few who were at yesterday's meeting expressed their belief, more than any plan or method, that God will again provide a miraculous resolution to this challenge before us.

On another note, there is now a transition going on in our Leadership Team structure. An article or two about this will be on the Wednesday Edition of our Newsletter this week.

Passing The Test

The Lord has torn the kingdom out of your hands and given it to one of your neighbors - to David. - 1 Samuel 28:17b

When God anoints a person, a pattern of testing appears to take place at specific times in the leader's life. God often takes each leader through four major tests to determine if that person will achieve God's ultimate call on his or her life. The person's response to these tests is the deciding factor in whether they can advance to the next level of responsibility in God's Kingdom.

Control - Control is one of the first tests. Saul spent most of his time as king trying to prevent others from getting what he had. Saul never got to the place with God in which he was a grateful recipient of God's goodness to him. Saul was a religious controller. This control led to disobedience and ultimately being rejected by God because Saul no longer was a vessel God could use.

Bitterness - Every major character in the Bible was hurt by another person at one time or another. Jesus was hurt deeply when Judas, a trusted follower, betrayed Him. Despite knowing this was going to happen, Jesus responded by washing Judas' feet. Every anointed leader will have a Judas experience at one time or another. God watches us to see how we will respond to this test. Will we take up an offense? Will we retaliate? It is one of the most difficult tests to pass.

Power - Power is the opposite of servanthood. Jesus had all authority in Heaven and earth, so satan tempted Jesus at the top of the mountain to use His power to remove Himself from a difficult circumstance. How will we use the power and influence God has entrusted to us? Do we seek to gain more power? There is a common phrase in the investment community, "He who has the gold rules." Jesus modeled the opposite. He was the ultimate servant leader.

Greed - This is a difficult one. Money has the ability to have great influence for either good or bad. When it is a focus in our life, it becomes a tool of destruction. When it is a by-product, it can become a great blessing. Many leaders started out well - only to be derailed once prosperity became a part of their life. There are thousands who can blossom spiritually in adversity; only a few can thrive spiritually under prosperity.

As leaders, we must be aware when we are being tested. You can be confident that each one of these tests will be thrown your way if God calls you for His purposes. Will you pass these tests? Ask for God's grace today to walk through these tests victoriously.

MEDITATION

"Dear God, thank You for the privilege of being able to commune with You through prayer. Thank You for speaking to me through Your Word and teaching me through life's circumstances.

"Thank you for the beautiful birds that sing such a lovely song, for the sun that shines, for the rain that cools and replenishes the thirsty earth...and provides water for us to drink.

"I pray for those in lands where there is famine or flood; that you would balance the weather and provide their needs. Please reveal your power, your love, your presence to them in a mighty way; that they would know that you are God,  with love and happiness that comes from the peace you give, Lord. Amen."
