February 16, 2011        NEWSLETTER      Wednesday Edition
Greetings!

We may be a little repetitious of the things we write about in our Newsletter, but we just need to make sure everyone on our e-mail list gets a chance to read about things that go on, schedules that are posted, events coming up, etc.  just in case you may have missed reading a previous issue.

It is also our desire that you send us news items regarding the ministries that you do, or happenings within your small group fellowships, or articles of interest that you might want to see published.  This is your church's Newsletter, and it is not just one person's domain, or a group of persons' for that matter.

Our God keeps His watch over us and blesses us every moment of our lives more than we ever realize or acknowledge.

Small Group Fellowship

Join one, you won't regret it!

What is a Small Group Fellowship? Essentially, it is a group of members and friends who gather together at least on a weekly basis to fellowship, to study God's Word, to share their experiences and sometimes their difficulties and problems, in a setting where one can feel safe and secure in the knowledge that one's confidentiality and trust are protected and taken as a matter of serious consideration.

That is why SGFs are called "safe havens" for its participants because they can be casual and laid back and honest about their feelings, opinions and emotions without fear of being derided or excluded.

There are many of you who do not belong to a small group fellowship, and it will be well for all to become a part of a SGF. You may even want to start one of your own, right at your own home, where you can invite family members and friends to join.

Devotional

God's Grace

There once was a man named George Thomas, pastor in a small New England town. One Easter Sunday morning he came to Church carrying a rusty, bent, old bird cage, and set it by the pulpit. Eyebrows were raised and, as if in response, Pastor Thomas began to speak....
"I was walking through town yesterday when I saw a young boy coming toward me swinging this bird cage. On the bottom of the cage were three little wild birds, shivering with cold and fright.   I stopped the lad and asked, 'What do you have there, son?'
"Just some old birds," came the reply.
"What are you going to do with them?" I asked.
"Take 'em home and have fun with 'em," he answered. "I'm gonna tease 'em and pull out their feathers to make 'em fight. I'm gonna have a real good time."
"But you'll get tired of those birds sooner or later. What will you do then?"
"Oh, I got some cats," said the little boy. "They like birds. I'll
take 'em to them."
The pastor was silent for a moment. "How much do you want for those birds, son?"
"Huh?? !!! Why, you don't want them birds, mister.  They're just plain old field birds. They don't sing. They ain't even pretty!"
"How much?" the pastor asked again.
The boy sized up the pastor as if he were crazy and said, "$10?"
The pastor reached in his pocket and took out a ten dollar bill. He placed it in the boy's hand. In a flash, the boy was gone. The pastor picked up the cage and gently carried it to the end of the alley where there was a tree and a grassy spot. Setting the cage down, he opened the door, and by softly tapping the bars persuaded the birds out, setting them free.
Well, that explained the empty bird cage on the pulpit, and then the pastor began to tell this story:
One day Satan and Jesus were having a conversation. Satan had just come from the Garden of Eden, and he was gloating and boasting.
"Yes, sir, I just caught a world full of people down there. Set me a trap, used bait I knew they couldn't resist. Got 'em all!"
"What are you going to do with them?" Jesus asked.
Satan replied, "Oh, I'm gonna have fun! I'm gonna teach them how to marry and divorce each other, how to hate and abuse each other, how to drink and smoke and curse.  I'm gonna teach them how to invent guns and bombs and kill each other.  I'm really gonna have fun!"
"And what will you do when you are done with them?" Jesus asked.
"Oh, I'll kill 'em," Satan glared proudly.
"How much do you want for them?" Jesus asked.
"Oh, you don't want those people.  They ain't no good. Why, you'll take them and they'll just hate you.  They'll spit on you, curse you and kill you.  You don't want those people!!"
"How much? He asked again.
Satan looked at Jesus and sneered, "All your blood, tears and your life."
Jesus said, "DONE!" Then He paid the price.
The pastor picked up the cage and walked from the pulpit.

A Paradigm Shift

Our Mission

"To share the Good News of God's grace everywhere and to be a loving community that empowers people to realize their divine destiny of living the Christ-centered lifestyle."

Compare the above to our stated mission before the change was made: "To connect people to a loving community, teach them the Gospel of grace, lead them in Spirit-filled worship of God, mature them into authentic and commited disciples who passionately emulate Christ, and equip them for Spirit-gifted ministry for the advance of God's kingdom to all nations."

You will note a definite paradigm shift from the previous mission of self propagation to one of people empowerment.

Pastor John emphasizes that the basis for this change of strategy is that one can't do anything for so long when there is no passion for what one is doing and that our church's culture must promote what its membership desires, something that pleases both God and one's self.

That culture is a relational Kingdom culture which promotes a Christ-centered lifestyle rather than promoting a "brand name" church or its distinctives. This must be the way "if believers are going to actualize their God-given destiny..."

Simply put, the Christ-centered lifestyle is easy to remember in 5 levels: 1) loving God, 2) loving my family, 3) serving humanity,

4) sharing the Good News, and 5) fulfilling my life mission. All these are intended not only to benefit oneself and others, but also to transform society.

If you haven't done so yet, read through the pamphlet "Vision 21: Journey to Divine Destiny.  Strategy for Kingdom Culture Formation. Gospel Life Master Plan 2011." This material is both challenging as it is inspiring!

Traditional Irish Blessing

May the road rise up to meet you.

May the wind always be at your back.

May the sun shine warm upon your face,

and rains fall soft upon your fields.

And until we meet again,

May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
