January 24, 2011 NEWLETTER  -  MONDAY EDITION

Greetings!

"Prayer changes things."  We hear this quote often, and we frequently say it ourselves.  The question is, do we believe it?

This week let us pray for our leadership and our ministries so that God's voice will be clearly heard as we map out our plans for the future. And as we do this let us all seek to please Him rather than men.

WEEKEND RECAP

Update: Philippines

Pastors Prom and Norma Amoguis are on their way back to the Philippines, specifically to Palawan.  At yesterday's service, Pastor Norma  updated us on the growth of the Gospel Life Community there saying that with the recent baptism conducted by Pastor Prom, membership has gone up to over 120.

She praised our local members and friends who responded enthusiastically to her recent appeal for sewing kits that she will use to help teach a good number of women in Palawan how to sew. She asked for at least 10 sewing kits.  Now she has 28.

She also repeated her request for those who have used laptops to donate them so that Pastor Prom can start teaching the locals over there not only how to use but also to repair computers.

Mention was also made of the other Gospel Life churches in the Philippines including those in Jala-Jala, Rizal; Guimba, Nueva Ecija; Cebu, Davao, etc.

Let us all continue to pray for Pastors Prom and Norma as they continue to minister to the folks in Palawan and in other localities in the Philippines.

Small Group Leadership

The first of two scheduled seminars on Small Group Leadership was conducted by Pastor John last Saturday morning.  Those who were there commented very positively on the wealth of information taught and learned at the meeting.

The second part will be presented this coming Saturday, January 29, 9:30 a.m., at the Fellowship Hall.

Spiritual Gifts

Session 3 of the Spiritual Gifts seminar was held this past Sunday at 2:00 p.m. after the Fellowship Lunch.  As in the previous two sessions, we continued to learn about the different spiritual gifts, how they differed from one another, and how to distinguish between one's native abilities and a true spiritual gift.

Session 4 of the Spiritual Gifts seminar is next Sunday, January 30, at 2:00 p.m.

The Skillful Worker

Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve before kings; he will not serve before obscure men. - Proverbs 22:29

The Lord has called each of us to be excellent in what we do. Those whom God used in the Kingdom as workplace ministers were skilled and exemplified excellence in their field. Not only were these men skilled, they were filled with God's Spirit.

Then the Lord said to Moses, "See, I have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability and knowledge in all kinds of crafts - to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze, to cut and set stones, to work in wood, and to engage in all kinds of craftsmanship" (Exodus 31:1-5).

Consider Huram, the master craftsman of bronze in whom Solomon entrusted much of the temple designs. He was a true master craftsman (see 1 Kings 7:14).

Consider Joseph, whose skill as an administrator was known throughout Egypt and the world. Consider Daniel, who served his king with great skill and integrity. The list could go on - David, Nehemiah, Acquilla and Priscilla.

I recall the first issue of an international publication we began. It was common to hear the comment, "It doesn't even look like a Christian magazine." They were saying the quality and excellence exceeded what they equated to Christian work. What a shame. Has inferior quality become synonymous with Christian work?

May we strive for excellence in all that we do for the Master of the universe.

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving (Colossians 3:23-24).

Systematic Giving
Giving and Receiving
One of the more common texts quoted from the Bible is "....it is better to give than to receive..."  Other texts allude to great blessings, tenfold, twentyfold, a hundred fold in return, to those who share their goods with others.

It is true that we can give without loving, but we cannot love without giving.  And what sense of joy one can have when he or she gives away something, not out of necessity but out of a wellspring of gratitude and praise for the One who loved us first, even before we ever loved Him!

Let's all cultivate a habit of generosity towards our fellowmen, whether known to us or strangers, as well as to the spiritual community to which we belong, our church. Planned giving is preferrable and more practical .
