Canoe Molds
The molds are the first conception of builing a modern canoe and determine the main design structure of the "kino" or hull of the canoe. Molds are usually
made out of fiberglass, wood, and re-bar. Some of the most hi tech, fastest outrigger canoes on the ocean today are made in molds using carbon, epoxy resin, and vacuum bagging technology.
A legendary surfboard shaper named Ernie Tanaka (one of Sage's first surfboards was an Ernie Tanaka!) set out to make an experimental paddling canoe in the 1990's with his son, Tommy Tanaka. The shape they came up with was not the best for paddling, but had the unintended result of being the fastest sailing canoe hull around. There are very few "Tanaka's" in existence, and they are highly sought after by those in the sailing canoe racing community.
Sage's brother Sark Wetzel, was on the west side of Oahu one day when he noticed a six man canoe mold sitting in someone's yard in Maile. After finding the owner, he came to find out it was THE original Tanaka mold. Sark is one of very few sailing canoe builders in Hawaii, and he immediately knew the importance of what he had found. He bought the mold on the spot and shipped it off to his home on Kaua'i where he is now producing some of the fastest outrigger canoes on the water!
On a side note, our sailing canoe the "Hina," was built by master canoe builder Kirkwood Clark on Molokai. It is an experimental hull design, a modified "Bradley" canoe. The Bradley was invented by Sonny Bradley, and shattered the open ocean outrigger paddle racing record books when it first came out in the late 1980's. Kirkwood Clark made a modified Bradley mold, popped this one canoe out of it (Hina), and then destroyed the mold. So the Hina is what you would call a "one out," meaning one hull popped out of the mold, then pau!

| Personal Note | |
2010 was a very busy year for us. Kirra (6 years) started kindergarten at Kamehameha Schools campus here on Maui which she absolutely loves. She says her favorite thing at school is playing music. Cru (2 1/2 years) is quite an active little boy. He still loves to climb, and he loves trains. And yes it's true...even though our ohana works around the ocean with our business, and Liz now working tug boats, we still don't get as much water time as we would like. One of our family resolutions this year is to get more beach time =)

Hope 2011 brings us all lots of time at the beach. A hui hou!
