Breaking News: Something To Build On |
|
 |
After many months of seeking affordable land to build more Habitat for Humanity homes this season, we are delighted to announce the purchase of two lots in Orleans from the City of Ottawa!
We are very excited to be able to build homes for two more deserving families in 2008! Habitat for Humanity NCR wants to extend its warmest thanks to the Mayor, City Councillors, the Affordable Housing Department, RPAM and the Planning Department at the City of Ottawa. A special thank you goes out to our Land Acquisition Committee.
These two new lots are located at 324-328 Tulip Crescent. Next steps for Habitat include soil testing, working on the house plans and build schedule, obtaining building permits, acquiring gifts in kind (shingles, toilets, windows, etc.) and getting all of our volunteers lined up.

Urbandale Corporation and
The Home Depot Canada Build Hope in the NCR
Habitat for Humanity NCR is pleased to annouce that Urbandale Corporation and The Home Depot Canada have decided to become Platinum House Sponsors, donating $75,000 each towards the construction of new, affordable homes for low income families in the Ottawa area!
The Home Depot Canada House and Urbandale Corporation House will be built on the newly acquired land at Tulip Crescent in Orleans.
Urbandale Corporation's gift is part of its 50th Anniversary celebration. As one of the region's most prominent land developers, Urbandale is proud to have 50 years of experience building communities in the NCR.
Habitat for Humanity feels privileged to receive this house sponsorship from Urbandale, and congratulates the Scouts Canada Tree Planting Program, Ottawa Rotary Club, Ottawa Public Library, Ottawa Food Bank, Homelessness Initiative and Cornerstone Shelter and Housing For Women as well for receiving support in honor of this landmark Urbandale Corporation anniversary.
The $75,000 sponsorship from The Home Depot Canada is a result of our office being awarded one of the grants it offers through the Habitat for Humanity Canada office.
Since 1996, The Home Depot has been the largest supporter of Habitat for Humanity in Canada and currently donates over $3 million in funding and products and thousands of volunteer hours each year in support of affordable housing projects. In 2008, The Home Depot will support more than 20 affordable housing projects across Canada, focusing on sustainability to help create energy efficient homes that provide lasting benefits.

Build Update - News from Tillbury Avenue & Durocher Street |
|
 |
Our Energy Star Women Build is running ahead of schedule thanks to the help of our generous sponsors; the hard work and dedication of our crews of volunteers including the 2 Combat Engineer Regiment - Construction Troop and Habitat staff; and of course our wonderful Site Supervisor Chris Helmer!
The structure is up; the roof and shingles are on; the windows are installed; the initial electrical and plumbing is done; and we've started to build the deck on the west side. Next weeks tasks will include lots of drywalling and some more bricklaying over the weekends by the team of students from Algonquin College's Heritage Program.
Irene Labelle, the mother of the family who will be living in this house with her two daughters, is eagerly anticipating her move. She is floored by all the commitment and dedication that everyone involved has put into this. In her words, "I'm getting really excited now! I can't wait to thank everyone!" 500 Sweat Equity Hours completed - family ready to move in!
The Mudioko/Kabengele household has been very busy over the past 6 months. Parents François and Maguy have played a huge part in the renovation of their home which was built in 2000.
Previously inhabited by the Williams family (who have moved to a Habitat home in Toronto), this "Gods Love In Action" home has undergone many changes - new kitchen, bathrooms, flooring and a completely finished living space in the basement have made it new again and ready for another big family.
François and Maguy have five beautiful children: Gabriel, Hadassa, Petronie, Jacquelinne and Frank-Benjamin, who also volunteered their time and performed well in school to contribute to the family's required 500 hours of sweat equity.
The generosity of Canadian Erectors Limited made it possible for the Williams family to move to Toronto and for the Mudioko family to move into this beautifully renovated and updated home.
With the finishing touches being completed next week, if you would like to volunteer to help complete this project in time for the family to move in at the end of the month, please contact Gisele ( volunteer@habitatncr.com or 613 749-9950 x 229).
Thank you to Johanne Mathieu, the Mudioko Family Partner, for your assistance with everything from bringing in forms to choosing kitchen countertops. Tom Keyworth has been instrumental in the completion of this home renovation, and Habitat for Humanity sends its love and appreciation to Tom and his wife for the dedication and hard work they have put into making this house a home. |

As well, we would like to congratulate Irene Charette at The Home Depot in Orleans for being the top national seller of paper houses! To show our appreciation, we are giving 2 tickets to our Steel Toes & Stilettos Gala to the Carleton Place and Orleans stores! |

The Habitat for Humanity ReStore is the perfect place to find anything and everything you need for your home or cottage! All of the products in the ReStore are donated by generous people and businesses in the National Capital Region. We then sell the products and building materials at low prices. Profits from the ReStore support the organization's operational costs.
The ReStore is an environmentally friendly store. Useful building materials are donated and resold instead of being thrown out - saving over 400 tonnes from our landfills each year!
The ReStore has a team of volunteers who help the staff keep the stores stocked with great products, and they are looking for more people to fill the ranks. Help keep the ReStore running smoothly by donating time or new or used products - and make sure that the ReStore is your FIRST stop next time you look to renovate. Check out the ReStore Website for more information about store locations, hours, and what you can donate!

 |
 |
Have you every wondered if you could help out Habitat for Humanity NCR and the environment at the same time without it costing you a cent?
Well, you CAN!
Habitat for Humanity NCR collects aluminum cans and recycles them, generating $10,000 last year!
