This past weekend, we had the privilege of hearing Reggie McNeal. Reggie is passionate about calling the people of God to quit merely going to church and to start looking for new and fresh ways of being the Church in the world today. I urge you to get the CD's of his teachings from our CD ministry at the church office.
On Sunday, he challenged us to consider ways to act on the promise that God made to Abraham in Genesis 12:
"Now the Lord said to Abram, 'Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.'"
We are blessed not so that we can simply spend our lives enjoying being blessed. We are blessed so that we can be a blessing to others. God wants us to be conduits of blessing. In fact, Reggie offered a very specific example of how we could do this. He challenged us to find three people during the week whom we could bless. More particularly, he spoke of finding people whom we could ask this question - "In a little while I am going to spend some time in prayer. How can I ask God to bless you today?" The idea is that we would ask this of strangers or mere acquaintances. Have you tried it?
We are a blessed people here at All Saints - terrific families, great friends, surrounded by beauty - on the whole...pretty affluent. Even more to the point, we are loved by God; and, we have not just heard about it, we have the experience of it. But, like Abraham, we are blessed to be a blessing. We are to intentionally seek people to bless. God is calling us here at All Saints to move from being an interior focused church to being an exterior focused church.
The Blessing people. That's what He wants us to be.
See you Sunday.
