Greetings!
When Israel was about to begin the conquest of Canaan, Moses sent 12 spies to do a little recon for the invasion. Caleb and Joshua were among them. When the spies returned, they reported that the land was great and fertile. However, the report then broke into majority and minority reports. The majority warned that the cities were fortified and the people were strong. They even reported the presence of giants. In their opinion, invasion would be certain suicide; but, there was the minority report. Joshua and Caleb urged Moses and the people to act quickly and resolutely because, despite the odds, God already had promised that the land was theirs. The Hebrew people backed down. In the ensuing judgment, all those who refused to trust God died off sometime during forty years of wandering in the wilderness. A new generation was raised up to replace them. Forty-five years later, Israel has begun the conquest, this time under the leadership of Joshua. Jericho lay in ruins and Ai had been left smoldering by the people of God. The 12 tribes of Israel were beginning the process of allotting specific parcels of land when Caleb, the other of the minority report duo, stepped forward. He made a remarkable request of Joshua. "You know what the LORD said to Moses the man of God at Kadesh Barnea about you and me. I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh Barnea to explore the land. And I brought him back a report according to my convictions, but my brothers who went up with me made the hearts of the people melt with fear. I, however, followed the LORD my God wholeheartedly. So on that day Moses swore to me, 'The land on which your feet have walked will be your inheritance and that of your children forever, because you have followed the LORD my God wholeheartedly.' Now then, just as the LORD promised, he has kept me alive for forty-five years since the time he said this to Moses, while Israel moved about in the desert. So here I am today, eighty-five years old! I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out; I'm just as vigorous to go out to battle now as I was then. Now give me this hill country that the LORD promised me that day. You yourself heard then that the Anakites were there and their cities were large and fortified, but, the LORD helping me, I will drive them out just as he said." (Joshua 14:6b-12) You have got to love it! Eighty-five years old? Do you realize what he is asking? "Joshua, as you parcel out the land for us to continue to conquer, give me the hill country; give me the land with the giants in it!" Really, Caleb? Not the parts that have already been conquered? Nobody would blame you for wanting to sit back and relax. But no, Caleb wanted to see the fulfillment of the word of God. He wanted the land of the giants! It all serves as a reminder of a few great truths:
- God's promises are as good today as when they were first uttered.
- We accomplish great things for God not by our strength or cleverness, but by His power.
- Old giants may be replaced by new ones, but God's word stands forever.
- We are never so old as to retire from trusting God.
- We need to search our memories for yesterday's promises from God that time and circumstances have stolen from our hearts so we can reclaim them today.
Give me the land with the giants indeed. What a faithful servant of God! Have a great weekend. Terrell P.S. If you read last week's entry closely, you might have noticed that I mistakenly wrote that Teresa and I trust that God has prepared our kids to be mission fields rather than missionaries. I meant that to say that we trust God for just the opposite! And thanks to all of you who caught that and called it to my attention. |
