Greetings!
Earlier this week the church staff took a daylong retreat to pray, study the Bible and plan. Rather than taking a few verses and digging deeply into them, we took a rather large section, the first eight chapters of Joshua, and made observations about the general thrust of the narrative. It is a fascinating group of stories that describe how, at the death of Moses, God led Joshua and the people of Israel across the Jordan to begin the conquest of Cannan. I urge you to read it. One thing that stuck out to us was the promise of God to His people. "Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given to you, just as I promised to Moses." (Josh. 1:3) What a terrific promise. The irony was that the ground between the Israelites and Canaan was rather wet. In fact it was a river; the Jordan River. And if that wasn't difficult enough, the land beyond the Jordan was already inhabited. The soles of other feet were already standing there! Obviously God was challenging Israel to put their faith in Him and not in their perceptions of how things appeared. Faith is seeing it as God says it. Have you ever noticed that we like to see it as we see it? But, if we are to walk with God, we must take Him at His word and act on it even if doing so seems to defy our perceptions of reality.
As the story unfolds, the nation was poised at the edge of the Jordan River. They could not see how they were going to cross without risking many lives in the attempt. Then the priests put the soles of their feet on the water. The water parted before them all. A moment before, they were standing inches from the water's edge. As they obeyed, taking God at His word, they saw with their outward eyes that which eyes of faith had already "shown" them.
How about you? What is God putting before you to believe? We often are only willing to "believe" in our lives what we can already "see" in our circumstances. But that's not faith.
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Lean not on your own understanding. Acknowledge Him in all your ways and He will direct your paths." (Proverbs 3:5, 6) See you on Sunday. Terrell |
