take off from KidK
MARATHON RUNDOWN
The Y factored heavy in KidsK, Pasta Feed and Cheer Teams

The weather showed up exactly as ordered and the Mankato Marathon took another great step forward as a major event for the area.

About 250 young runners took part in the KidsK around Sibley Park on the afternoon of Friday, Oct. 21. This Y-sponsored event was much more than a run, as face-painters and crazy-hair-stylists were on hand to brighten up the look of the run for any kid willing.

The Pasta Feed fed about 600 folks at four downtown restaurants, and when the sauce cleared the Y received $1,500 in proceeds as beneficiary.

On Marathon day, cheer team members including Karen Meyer, Liz and Dave Hageman, Martha Robinson, Bob Dickhudt, John Kind and others were at mile 24 encouraging runners. Naturally, the Village People's "Y.M.C.A." pounded the morning air with audio encouragement.

Women's Retreat Nov. 12 at the Y

Chris Schull

Chris Schull to discuss "Choices"

Fitness trainer and running coach Chris Schull will keynote the Nov. 12 women's retreat at the Y with a talk titled 'Choices.'

The 2011 Women's Retreat takes place from 9:30 to 1 p.m. at the Y and is a day devoted to relaxation, recreation, and motivation. Activities include yoga, pilates, dance fitness and massage. A light, healthy lunch will be served.

"For women who have to manage so much and move so fast so often, this is a time devoted to taking it easy," says the event's coordinator Bethany Myre.

"It's a day of relaxation and motivation just for them."

Schull will discuss distinguishing the choices women make in life - which to follow and which to cut short
loose.

Cost is $25 for members and $50 for non-members. To register call 387-8255.

New: Intro To Yoga Fitness class replacing Golden Yoga
yoga poses

To better match yoga classes with member interests, the Y is ceasing the Golden Yoga program as it's been known and starting a new introductory class.

Introduction to Fitness Yoga will be a free class and ideal for those with little or no yoga experience. For those interested in our more advanced instruction, we will offer several yoga classes as part of our regular fee-based programming.

We're confident this new structure will better serve the growing numbers of members (and non-members) who are seeking a great yoga experience from the area's best instructors.

Look for the new programs in the winter program catalog.

Dodge, pickle and basket
This winter, three ways for adults to have a ball.

Three new programs are on their way this winter for adult members: Pickleball, dodgeball and an under-35 basketball league.

Pickleball will be presented at the Y in a pick-up setting during noon hours beginning in January. The game is a cross between table tennis and real tennis, is popular in southern states and was featured prominently in the recent Senior Games.

"It's a good workout without running across a tennis or racquetball court," said Program Director Laura Diaz.

The Under-35 basketball league will take shape in February. It was created in response to member demand.

"I  had a lot of requests from players out of college who haven't hit that 35 mark but really want to play in a league setting," Diaz said. Players ages 18 to 34 will form their own teams.

Adult dodgeball returns to the Y in February. This  low-competitive team sport will be open to all over 18. Teams of 10 will play on Thursday nights.

Diaz also noted that a "Battle of the Racquets" competition will be underway in January in which players put their contact information on a pyramid board, contact those above them and compete their way in pursuit of the top slot.

For more information on any of the programs, check out the upcoming Winter/Spring program catalog or call Laura Diaz at 345-9808.
