A GREAT HAIR DAY

JCPenney selects the Y to receive national stylist prize

The Mankato Family YMCA received $5,000 as the result of the talents of two JCPenney hair stylists.

The local Penney store took part in a national competition in which the Matrix company -- a hair care product division of L'Oreal -- would award the top five stores in the nation with prize money to distribute to a local charity of their choice.

Final result: stylists Gina Roozen and Beth Baily-Kewatt's work on a Mankato woman's makeover was selected as one of the five national winners. And the store chose the Y to receive its $5,000 prize money.

On Tuesday, Aug. 30 representatives of Matrix and JCPenney presented YMCA Executive Director John Kind with the check for $5,000. Kind noted that the money would be put toward helping low-income families afford the Y's After School Adventures program.

JCPenney has over the past several years contributed to the Y through its "Round Up" campaigns, the latest of which finished up in late August.

 MARATHON EVE ROUND-UP
Great events up and running on the night before the Mankato Marathon

The Y is proud to sponsor The Mankato Family YMCA KidsK, taking place Oct. 21 -- the night before the big Marathon itself.

This exciting event for kids starts at 4:40 p.m. at Sibley Park. There's a limit of 300 participants, and kids can register here. As with all youth sports at the Y, the idea with this race isn't competition, it's getting the kids' bodies and spirits up and running for a great time. No times will be recorded, but there will be a timer at the end of the run.

The packet pickup for all KidK runners will be from 3:30 to 4:30 at Sibley Park, with all runners expected at the race site at 4:30.

That afternoon and evening, the Mankato Marathon Pasta Feed will get underway. This year's pasta feed will be more focused on the downtown area with participation from: Pub 500, Number 4, Pagliai's, Loose Moose and Olive's.

Chefs at each location will be serving up a special pasta dish (or dishes) just for the occasion. Advance tickets will be $10 through September 30 and increase to $12 afterward. They can be redeemed at any of the participating restaurants.

Young swimmers: Join the Marlins

SCHOOL-BASED MENTORING READY TO ROLL

After months of planning and coordinating with the Mankato school district and the United Way, the Y this fall will launch School-Based Mentoring this fall at Franklin Elementary school in Mankato.

In the program, adult volunteers meet for an hour a week with a child for lunch at the child's school (although arrangements can be made for meeting before or after school as well).

The idea is that for an hour, the two get to know each other and establish a connection -- another step toward a positive influence in a child's life.

Coordinator Cheryl Hamond says the program will be launched around the third week of September.

Hamond said the Y is well on its way to reaching the goal of 30 volunteers -- thus far 23 have signed on with a few weeks left before start.

Once the program takes hold at Franklin, the hope is to expand it to other elementary schools throughout the Mankato School District.

Hamond also coordinates the Y's Brother/Sister program, which she says has 80 children waiting for mentors.

"Both programs have the same goal -- giving kids one more adult in their life who can bring a positive influence," Hamond said. "Their chances at a successful future, a successful school career and a successful family life all become much better."

Learning democracy by leading it: Youth In Government info meeting Oct. 3.

The Y will host an informational meeting on the upcoming Youth In Government season at 6 p.m. Oct. 3 at the West High annex.

This is a great opportunity for kids in grades 8 through 12 to learn about the YMCA program that teaches how state government works by putting students into the fray. Students can take on roles of lawmakers, judges, cabinet members or even media watchdogs, all in the name of getting a first-hand feel for how democracy works. The season culminates with a four-day model assembly session at the State Capitol in St. Paul.

The meeting will take place in room 1102 of the annex building in West's back lot. Registration deadline is Thursday, Oct. 6.
