The positive spin

Two runs in one: Santa Sprint & Reindeer Dash
There's still time to register early for the Dec. 11 running event that will be a cool blast of fun for kids and adults alike.

The Reindeer Dash 5K run and the Santa Sprint takes place Dec. 11 here at the Y. The day continues our annual tradition of the  Santa Sprint for kids (yes, Santa and Mrs. Claus have put us on their busy schedules) and adds the 5K -- for any pace.

The Santa Sprint is an eighth-mile stretch on the Red Jacket Trail next to the Y.  It will begin at 10 am. and  all participants will receive a T-shirt. Fees are $8 per child.

The 5K Reindeer Dash doesn't actually need to be a dash. It's simply a non-competitive run or walk in the cool outdoors. (For the competitive among us, times will be called out at the finish line). Fees for the 5K before Dec. 6 are $15 ($10 for ages 6-12). Registration after Dec. 7 is $20 ($15 for ages 6-12). Early registrants are guaranteed a T-shirt.

Fill out a registration form here or at the Y.

kettlebell class in session

Kettlebells among the new features in fitness

If you've browsed through the Winter/Spring 2011 program catalog, you've probably noticed the word "New" sprinkled all over the fitness section.

From the swinging-weight training of kettlebells to a smoking cessation class, the Y's fitness program continues its commitment to overall wellness while responding to what members are asking for in their Y.

In fact, two sessions of early-morning kettlebells training have been added (they aren't listed in the catalog). The 5:30 a.m. sessions run from Jan 4 to Feb. 10 in the first winter session and Feb. 15 to March 24 in the second session. Check the website for any further changes or additions.

New programs include:
  • Freedom From Smoking
  • Kettlebells
  • Cycle Tone
  • Yoga for Athletes
  • Body reform
  • Boot camp Plus
  • Lifestyle Change: A New Approach to Weight Loss
