EIB to Sponsor the European Prize in Regional Science
We have some really good news about the European Prize in Regional Science. The Jury operates entirely independently and is composed of senior regional scientists from Europe and around the world. Its President, Professor Piet Rietveld of the Free University in Amsterdam, reports elsewhere that this year's Prize winner is Professor Tony Venables of the University of Oxford (as from September 2008). Tony's work is, of course, very well known. Apart from his many other contributions, he is the European pioneer of the New Economic Geography - contributing with Paul Krugman since 1992 and one of the three authors of the widely cited and highly influential The Spatial Economy (1999). But he has also contributed in a wide ranging way to the study of international trade, the new economic geography and applied work on urban and regional economics. The Jury have again made an excellent choice.
However the most recent and welcome news is that the European Investment Bank have agreed to provide EUR 5,000 annual sponsorship of our European Prize. This is being provided through the EIB's Universities Research Action Committee. We applied back in January of this year and after providing a detailed document in March, collated by Marie Hervo, confirmation arrived just on 14th May. Final details have still to be agreed but the decision is now official and we look forward to working with EIB/BEI officials from now on and we hope welcoming their representative to the Prize giving award in Liverpool in August. Tony Venables has agreed to give a plenary lecture as a part of that ceremony. So there is a double reason to congratulate the Jury on their work. I still remember with pleasure the vital lecture Jacques Thisse gave last summer in Paris when he received the prize for 2007 and I am sure Tony Venable's lecture will live up to that standard.
In the meantime I would like publicly to express my thanks to the Jury for its scrupulous work, maintaining the highest standards for European Regional Scientists to aim for and also to the EIB for their support. I will keep members updated and look forward to seeing as many of you as possible in Liverpool in August.
Paul Cheshire, 20 May 2008

2008 ERSA Prize for Prof. Tony Venables
The ERSA prize committee of the European Regional Science Association has decided to award the 2008 ERSA prize to Tony Venables. This is the seventh prize that has been awarded. Earlier prizes have been given in recent years to our distinguished colleagues Peter Nijkamp, Jean Paelinck, Alan Wilson, Ake Andersson, Martin Beckmann and Jacques Thisse.
The decision to propose Tony Venables as the next prize winner was not difficult. It did not take the committee consisting of Johannes Broecker, Charlie Karlsson, Daniel Shefer, Roger Stough, Jacques Poot and Piet Rietveld (chairman) much time to arrive at the conclusion that Tony Venables is a strong candidate who satisfies all criteria for this prestigious prize.
Tony Venables is professor of Economics at the University of Oxford. He has published extensively in the areas of international trade and spatial economics, including work on trade and imperfect competition, economic integration, multinational firms, and economic geography. One of his main publications in the field of regional science is: The spatial economy; cities, regions and international trade, with M. Fujita and P. Krugman (MIT Press, 1999).

The RSAI Founder's Medal for Professor Antoine Bailly, University of Geneva
Professor
Antoine Bailly, professor Emeritus at the University of Geneva, chair
of the IGU Applied Geography Commission, is the recipient 2008 of the
Founder's Medal of the Regional Science Association International, an
award given only every four years. The award will be given in Liverpool
on 28 August 2008 in a plenary session of the European Congress in
Regional Science.
The criteria
The RSAI Founder's
Medal was established to recognise lifetime contributions to the field
of Regional Science and to the Association. The criteria established
for the award are as follows: - The recipient should be a senior
scholar who has contributed in an important way to the field of
Regional Science in a scholarly sense; - The recipient should have
been active in the RSAI for a sustained period, but not necessarily
active at the time of the award; also the award is not given
posthumously; - The recipient should be a person with whom many
members can identify; his/her contributions could be a major work in
one area or many works in several areas; - The contribution need not
be limited to one type of contribution; it might be theory, method or
policy, for example. It is recognised that the native country and
language of scholars affect the extent to which they are known by the
membership, and an effort should be made to take this into account.
Biography
Born
in 1944, Antoine Bailly is professor emeritus of economic geography at
the University of Geneva, Switzerland. He was a professor in different
universities in Canada, France, Portugal and Switzerland. Past vice
president of ERSA and past president of ASRDLF, president of the
