Celebrating Second Birthdays-Recognition, Emotional Support, and Hope for BMT Survivors
Celebrating Second Birthdays (CSB) was created in 2008 to recognize the progress and accomplishments of the BMT survivor and family. It acknowledges and honors nearly 500 BMT survivors with a specially designed "re-birthday" card during the month of their transplant anniversary. The program creates a community of survivors that understands the importance of their "Second Birthday" and appreciates the recognition. This is especially important due to the lack of awareness and understanding in the general population about what BMT survivors are dealing with sometimes for years following their transplants as is reflected in the words below written by a survivor: ...not many people in our lives truly understand how things are. We haven't lost friends, but they have gone on with their lives, dropping the occasional card but certainly have limited our time together because we can't do a lot of things together. I don't think they know how lonely it can be for the patient and caregiver. They don't abandon us because they don't care; they just don't understand how important the connections are. If you are interested in signing up to be recognized on your BMT anniversary, please email cindygoldman@nbmtlink.org or sign up online. If your BMT center would like to join our Celebrating Second Birthdays recognition program, please email cindygoldman@nbmtlink.org for addtional information. We are grateful to Amgen, Inc., The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and The Meredith A. Cowden Foundation for their support of this program. |
