Kyle Jones

 kyle jones

Kyle Jones is member of the Canadian National Elite Triathlon Team and a 7SYSTEMSer since 2007. Kyle made his World Cup debut in 2005 and since then he has racked up numerous top 10 finishes but never any outright wins.  That all changed this past month.

Kyle focused his spring on increasing his foot speed and to that end did a number of running races, but had not yet done any triathlons in 2011.  On May 28 Kyle travelled to Ixtapa, Mexico to compete in the ITU Triathlon Pan American Cup where he bested an international field for his first ITU victory with a time of 1:55:11. Two weeks later and half way across the world, Kyle took on the best triathletes AustralAsia had to offer at ITU Triathlon Asian Cup in Amakusa, Japan where he notched his second ITU win with a time of 1:48:18.  One week later Kyle travelled to China for his third ITU Cup race in 4 weeks.  Kyle took the win at the Weihai ITU Triathlon Premium Asian.  What a month! Kyle has shown us that he can really DO MORE.

We wish this 7SYSTEMS Proteam member the best of luck on his road to the 2012 Olympics.  It looks like he is firing on all cylinders right now.

Recipe: Kyle's Lemon Garlic Pasta

Lemon Garlic Pasta

Kyle Jones has provided this great recipe for summer: "With the summer season now upon us, my wife and I enjoy this "light" pasta dish at least once a week. It's quick and easy to prepare, is very healthy and tastes delicious!"

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound of pasta
  • 2 teaspoons of garlic (minced)
  • 1/3 cup of paremesan cheese (grated)
  • 1/2 cup of parsley (chopped)
  • 2-3 tablespoons of lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons of lemon zest
  • 4-5 tablespoons (or more) of olive oil
  • salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

  1. Choose your favourite pasta and cook to desired tenderness. We typically like spaghattini.
  2. While the pasta is cooking, in a skillet warm up some olive oil and add all of the remaining ingredients in no particular order. You might have to play around with the portions of each to your liking.
  3. Once the pasta is cooked, strain it, and then add it to the skillet and mix it all up!

We also like to add bacon on occasion. In a separate skillet cook up 4-5 slices. Once it's cooked chop it up in small pieces and add it to the "sauce".

 Done and done!

Coaches Corner: 7 Tips on doing a Transition

Kyle Jones's 7 tips on doing a Transition

Follow these tips and before heading down to the swim start take 5 minutes and visualize what you plan to do both in T1 and T2. Have a plan and stick to it. Don't get side tracked by what others are doing.
  1. Stay relaxed. Whether you've just exited the swim or are coming off the bike, take your time and there will be less chance of making a mistake. Be quick, but in control.
  2. Stay focused. It's easy for your mind to start wandering. Focus on the task at hand and don't think about who's hot on your heels or the time you might be losing to your rivals.
  3. Ditch the socks. It's no easy task to put them on with wet feet. Avoid them altogether and you'll save a ton of time. This is something you'll want to practice in training first to avoid blisters on race day.
  4. Leave your sunglasses attached to your helmet. Place the "arms" of your glasses through the vents in your helmet so they are snug in place. Simply buckle your helmet in transition and you have your sunglasses too. Then, once you've mounted your bike and settled into your pace, you can put them on.
  5. Leave your cycling shoes already clipped to the pedals - use elastics to hold them in place so they don't fly off when you start running with your bike towards the mount line. This is another one to practice first before trying it in a race. You certainly don't want to lose a shoe!
  6. As you approach the dismount line remove your feet from your cycling shoes but leave them attached to the pedals,. Ride with your feet on top of your shoes for the last couple hundred metres and then dismount your bike. This way you'll be able to run quicker to your spot, there's less chance of injuring yourself from running in bike shoes, and when you get to your spot you'll be able to slip right into your running shoes
  7. Organize the accessories you'll use on the run neatly so you can grab them quickly. Ex. place your bib number/race belt, any gels or other nutritional aids inside a hat or bunched together so you can grab them all quickly and start running.

If you were in Victoria, BC in May or June, hopefully you got a chance to take part in one of the many events that the Victoria International Cycling Festival had to offer. Both May and June were packed full of fun events all over the city that celebrated the strong cycling culture in Victoria.

7SYSTEMS Pro team member and Olympic cyclist Erinne Willock captured her first Bastion square criterium title after several attempts over the last ten years.  To follow up she won a silver medal at the National Road cycling championships last weekend.  Bravo Erinne!

The Victoria Cycling festival also showcased the inagural "Ryder Hesjedal Tour de Victoria.  Fifteen hundred people toured some of the best roads Vancouver Island has to offer while being led by Tour de France superstar and local hero Ryder Hesjedal. 7SYSTEMS Pro team member Jasper Blake participated in the 140km ride and said it was the most fun he's had on a bike in years.

That same weekend Jasper's 3 year old son, Finlayson rode in the Tim Hortons Timbits Challenge.  Some of Canada's top professional bike riders led 150 eager kids around the 900m loop.
