Athletes of the Month: Adam Campbell and Louis Therien

Adam Campbell

Adam Campbell is a former member of the Canadian National Triathalon and Duathalon teams but in 2006 decided to focus solely on competitive running.  Last weekend Adam won the National 50 mile running championships held at Elk Lake in Victoria BC.

Not only did Adam win the national title but he also set a Canadian record for that distance in the process.  His time of 5 hours 44 minutes is the fastest ever run by a Canadian. To prove that he is not a one trick pony, Adam successfully earned a Law degree from the University of Victoria one week earlier.  Adam Campbell has been a 7SYSTEMS user for 3 years and he can certainly DO MORE!

"Finally, as I pushed through the final windy kilometers of the lower Beaver lake trails, I began to run quite hard as I realized I might be able to break 5:44. I willed my legs to move as fast as they could to the finish area seeing 5:43:57-8-9 ticking over on the clock."

 Louis Therien

Louis Therien

Louis Therien is an avid runner and has been a 7SYSTEMS athlete for just over 2 years.  So far this year Louis has been tearing up the long distance running scene. In January, Louis completed the Walt Disney World marathon finishing with a time of 2:54:06. This was his very first marathon.

His most recent accomplishment was completing the Canadian Half Marathon Championship with a time of 1:20:15.  We are looking forward to cheering on Louis for the rest of the 2011.

Recipe: Coconut Scrambled Eggs

Adam Campbell's post workout meal:

"I like the flavour that coconut oil provides and it is not destroyed by heat. The medium chain fatty acids are very resistant to heat and even commercial oils heated to very high temperatures retain their MCFA's. Coconut oil is one of the best and safest oils to use in cooking."

Coaches Corner: 5 Tips for Long Runs

Adam Campbell's five tips for long runs:

1- Pacing is everything
Starting out at a very conservative pace will pay huge dividends in the end. I often use the first 1-2 miles as warm-up and then I settle into my goal race pace and then try to pick up the pace over the last 1/3 of the race. I have had my best results when I paced the opening miles properly and have suffered horribly at the end when I haven't.

2-Plan for adversity
I find that most people focus on and visualize having a perfect day, but things rarely go according to plan in endurance races. When the athlete has something go wrong they are mentally unprepared and it throws them off their game. Rather, expected the unexpected and be pleasantly surprised when things go right. It's win-win
