Athletes of the Month - Reid Coolsaet and Megan Brown

March-April 2011 saw some amazing results from several of our 7SYSTEMS 2011 Pro Team athletes, including Reid Coolsaet and Megan Brown's victories at Canadian Half-Marathon Championships on April 17,2011 in Montreal for which we have named them our athletes of the month.

Reid Coolsaet

Reid won the 21 km race over a very deep field with a time of 1:04:54.  Reid was closely followed by defending champion, Matt Louiselle, who finished with a time of 1:05:28. This was Reid's eighth Canadian title.  Reid also competed in the New York Half marathon on March 20, 2011. He finished with a time of 1:02.42 and placed 13th overall.

Reid is from Hamilton, Ontario and has been running cross-country since the sixth grade. He is a 7-time 5000m Canadian Champion and also credits the 10 000m, marathon and cross country running titles to his name. He has participated at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, 4 IAAF World Cross Country Championships and 2 World Track & Field Championships.

Megan Brown

Megan competed in the Half-marathon Championships in Montreal alongside Reid and won the women's race with a time of 1:14:08. Megan is currently with the Brooks Canada Marathon Project in Toronto.

Megan is a top Canadian middle distance runner and has many road, track and cross country victories to her name. She has had an impressive university athletics career and was named Student-athlete of the year four times at the University of Toronto. After facing challenges with lymes disease in 2008, 25 year old Megan started taking 7SYSTEMS and has now returned to good health and shown us that nothing is going to stop her!

Recipe - Ali's Vegan Carob Chip Cookie Recipe

Be adventurous and try Ali's vegan carob chip cookies made with tofu or avocado.

Carob Chips

 Ingredients

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 11/4 cups sugar
  • 3/4 cup vegan margarine at room temperature
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (or more if you love vanilla)
  • 1/3 cup soft or silken tofu
  • 3/4 cup carob chips

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375.
  2. In a large bowl, stir together the flour, baking soda and salt;  set aside
  3. Blend together (with a hand mixer or food processor) sugar, margarine, vanilla and tofu until smooth.
  4. Add the tofu mixture and the carob chips to the flour mixture and stir well.
  5. Drop rounded spoonfuls on to a cookie sheet and press flat. Bake for 8-10 minutes.

 Makes 24 cookies.

This recipe can be made with regular margarine or butter if you are not vegan but try using the tofu or substitute a pureed avocado instead of the full amount of butter. Avocado does change the color though so be ready for some delicious green cookies!  Carob chips have a different taste then chocolate, although they look the same. There is no sugar added when they are processed and they are naturally sweet. They don't contain any of the caffeine that is in chocolate either!

Coaches Corner - Plaxton's Tips for Hill Climbing on the Bike

Max Plaxton, a member of the 7SYSTEMS 2011 Pro Team, was kind enough to share his top five hill climbing tips. Max is a professional mountain biker and has joined Specialized USA Factory Team in 2011 after two years in the Sho-air program. Max finished 5th place overall in the 2010 pro XCT standings. Look for Max's newest race results in our Community News section below.

Tips to hill climb like Max:

1. Use the appropriate gearing for the gradient. I personally tend to climb with a pretty high cadence(90-100 rpm) which I find helps me when riding the mountain bike. Using a slightly higher cadence in beneficial but it can take time to build this ability.

2. Stand whenever it feels right. Some riders sit more then others and some riders stand more. Everyone is different but generally I find it's beneficial to alternate between sitting and standing. When getting out of the saddle, I usually shift down a gear and up the pace a little bit.

3. Gauge your effort and settle into a rhythm. It's easy to go too hard in the first part of the climb and often riders will pay the price. Save some "go" for the last part of the climb and try to finish strong. It's all about knowing yourself and your strengths and this won't happen overnight.

4. Select the appropriate clothing. I really like climbing with as little layers as possible. If you know you will be doing climbs on your ride then maybe wear a vest which you can peel off and put in your pocket so you don't get too hot on the climb.  Rolling down the arm warmers is a nice feeling too.

5. Reward yourself at the top of the climb and take in the views, eat a snack, take a picture, etc... There are often really cool views at the top of a climb. It doesn't matter if it's the top of mount Doug or the observatory at home in Victoria or the top of a mountain in the Alps.

Climbing can be hard, but this is how you will get a lot of your fitness and there is almost always a rewarding downhill to follow.

Simon Whitfield and Kyle Jones Prove Triathletes Can Run

Triathlete Simon Whitfield won the very hilly Comox Valley half marathon on March 20th in a time of 1:06:23 while National Triathlon Teammate and fellow 7SYSTEMS Pro Team member Kyle Jones finished 4th in 1:07:35.  What made these results so impressive was the quality of field that took part in the event, including three-time Olympic marathoner Jon Brown (Brown finished 4th in 2000 and 2004 Olympic marathon events) who finished 5th right behind Jones.
