Nutrition Tip - Simplify Your Food

As you head into 2011, are you wondering how to improve your nutrition?  Does it seem like a jumbled mess?

It's time to take a step back and simplify, simplify, simplify.  Here are 7 simple rules from Jasper Blake to help you wade through all the garble.

Jude's lentil salad

1.    Eat food that has little or no processing:  For example, an apple, fresh off the tree is as good as it gets.  The integrity of the apple exists in it's whole and all the positive nutritional qualities are in tact.  It's only when we start processing the apple that we run into problems and loose nutritional value.  Applesauce with added sugar and pasteurizing for example is not as good for you as a whole real apple.
2.    Read Ingredients Lists:  Make a habit of reading what you are actually putting in your mouth.  A good rule of thumb is to eat foods that have ingredients you can understand.  In the food department, quality is more important than quantity.

It's the off season but it can be the best time of the year to improve.

At least once a week during your indoor 'trainer' rides, it is important to devote some time to improving pedaling efficiency and skills. Your goals for this workout are:
1. to refine your pedal stroke and promote pedaling efficiency/coordination/strength
2. to develop skills that you can employ to training throughout the winter.
3. to keep the hour of training fun and stop you from riding too hard too early in the season.

hell ride 2010

Another year of riding to hell and backLong time 7SYSTEMS user Nigel Gray and many of his NRG athletes took on the annual To Hell and Back bike loop in the hills just to the east of Toronto.  As usual, the ground was snowy and frozen which made the cross bikes that much more critical.  This year the event spanned 3 rides between Nov 21 and 28 with the finale being a merciless 145km ride at 2 degrees Celsius with times ranging between 4:55 and 7hours with 14 of 15 riders finishing.  Congratulations!
