Athletes of the Month - Kevin White & Shaun Taylor

Kevin White

Kevin White is a 37 year old firefighter and proud father. Kevin in Hawaii Kevin's primary goal in 2010 was to qualify for the 70.3 World Championships in Clearwater.  Kevin trained hard and set personal bests in all three disciplines en route to earning his World Championship spot. Kevin had a secondary goal of finishing the half ironman championships in under five hours.  On numerous occasions Kevin thought he may need to re-evaluate his goals due to the rigors of work and parenthood.  However with the addition of 7SYSTEMS to his nutrition regime and good coaching he was able to get refocused.

"Race day set up as I expected...cool sand, cold water and a breeze! I had a tough swim in the ocean...we don't have a lot of that to practice in, here in Ontario. So I was already behind my pace coming out of the water. I hammered on the bike and couldn't believe how well my legs held up as the ride continued at nearly a 37 kmph average pace. Fastest bike leg ever and that set up a run with what I thought would be spent legs. Although I was in a world of hurt, I pushed through my run on pace and finished with a 4:58! I was able to push my training to the next level, which showed in my race results, with the help of 7SYSTEMS and I'm living a dream definitely doing more! Thanks 7SYSTEMS!"

Shaun Taylor

Shaun Taylor is a bit crazy.  He likes to get on his mountain bike and keep riding it until he can ride Shaun mtbno longer.  Sometimes that means 24 hours straight...sometimes 48 hours.  Shaun also runs his own coaching business (check out Forward Momentum Coaching in Alberta) and is the father of two boys and was a long-time member of the military.  In October, Shaun represented Team Canada at the World Solo 24hr MTB Championships in Australia. He finished 3rd in the 45-49 age group with 19 laps, placing him amongst the top amateur riders!   This was his third podium finish in the past four years at Worlds.  Shaun put in this amazing performance despite breaking his seat post after 300kms of racing and having to ride an entire lap (45 mins) with his seat post and saddle in his back pockets. As he says... "45mins of no seat post racing after already completing 20hrs of racing is HARD".  Shaun relied on 7SYSTEMS to help him stay healthy in his preparations.

"7SYSTEMS has managed to keep me going at approx 20hrs of in saddle training per week. I regularly test the limits of my immune system and 7SYSTEMS helps me hold off those colds that I can feel are otherwise around the corner. I really like how easy it makes managing my cupboard full of supplements now and packing them for Canberra was a breeze."

Contest Winner - Ajay Kohli

For the last seven months 7SYSTEMS has been hosting the DO MORE Challenge: a test to see if Ajay runningproper micro and macro nutrition can improve training and recovery.  The last of the three finalists, Ajay Kohli, raced earlier this month and his incredible result earned him the title of the 2010 7SYSTEMS DO MORE Challenge winner.

Kohli competed in the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC 5km Run for the Cure and finished in a time of 21:19.  He not only exceeded the 7SYSTEMS DO MORE Challenge goal of a 7% improvement, but also shattered his personal goal of a 14% improvement.  Kohli's time this year improved upon his previous race time by 27%.  This put Ajay ahead of the two other finalists, who improved 9% and 5% respectively.

"Over the past year and a half I have shed over 75 lbs, made healthier lifestyle and dietary choices, and now I have improved my 5km race time by 27%," said Kohli.  "With the support of 7SYSTEMS and my coach JJ Neely, I have noticed that my training is more stable and that I'm stronger, leaner and faster!"

Kohli's improvement is truly a remarkable story.  Several years ago he made a pledge to become fit and healthy.  He quit smoking, stopped drinking and started to watch what he ate and how he exercised.

"Congratulations to Ajay and the lifestyle transformation he has made," said Canadian Ironman champion and one of the founders of 7SYSTEMS Jasper Blake.  "Our DO MORE Challenge was the perfect way to demonstrate how hard work, proper nutrition and the addition of micro-nutrient supplementation can help anyone, Olympian or weekend warrior, do more on race day and every day!"

Core Training Tips For Runners and Triathletes

The TRX Suspension Trainer is becoming a popular training tool amongst runners and triathletes.  Using the TRX can help you train those core muscles that your body will call upon to stabilize yourself and stay strong in the late stages of a race.

An effective exercise on the TRX for runners and triathletes is the TRX Atomic Push-Up. See the video for a demonstration.  This is a functional movement for runners as it engages the hip flexors and core.

1. Come up to a push up / plank position, with your toes suspended in the TRX.  Ensure your core is engaged and your back is flat.
2. Draw hips into the air and your knees into your chest.
3. As you drop back down you move into a classic push up position and perform a push up.

Linnea Humphrey Has Great Day at Ironman Florida.  Humphrey, competing in the 40-44 age group, was the second fastest amateur woman and 10th woman overall with a time of 9:58:09 which included a blistering 3:29 run.  "Thanks to 7Systems for getting me to the line healthy, uninjured and ready to go."

Richard Whitehead broke his own world record at the Chicago MarathonRichard Whitehead British double amputee and current world amputee record holder at both the marathon and half marathon distances, Richard Whitehead, broke his own world record at the Chicago Marathon in October.  Whitehead took 3 minutes off his record en route to a 2:42 finish in the unexpectedly hot conditions.  Whitehead was aided by his support runner, Stefan Timms, one of two athletes enlisted to run alongside him throughout the event.  To read more about Whitehead check out his website http://www.marathonchamp.com/home/.

Malcolm Howard finished off his first World Cup season in the single sculls at the rowing World Championships. Malcom HowardLong time 7SYSTEMS PRO TEAM athlete Howard helped Canada win gold in the men's eight at the Beijing Olympics but switched his focus this season from the eight to the men's single sculls.  Howard's World Cup results have steadily improved this year as he is learning how to row on his own. He started with a seventh-place finish at the first World Cup event of the season in Slovenia. He followed that up with a sixth in the second World Cup in Germany and just missed the podium in Switzerland, finishing fourth.  Although his results at World Champs were a bit disappointing, Howard is using them as good motivator to prepare for 2011 and getting on the podium in London in 2012.

Happy Training!
