Athletes of the Month - Mike Bosch & Linnea Humphrey
MIKE BOSCH

Five years ago, 37 year-old Mike Bosch was nearing 240lbs and decided it was time to turn his health around. Fast forward five years and Mike is now 148lbs and entering his 5th year of running. Each year since 2005 Mike has logged more miles and gotten faster, setting new PBs over every distance he chooses to compete at. In 2009 Mike ran 3:08:46 at the Buffalo marathon in the spring and then 2:56:09 in the fall at Good Life Toronto. This spring he lowered his marathon PB to 2:48:30 at Mississauga, finishing 12th overall and 3rd master.
Mike has worked hard during those 5 years, putting in an increasing number miles and some tough speed work sessions as he gained fitness in a well planned progressive program under the watchful eye of a coach. Mike's goal is to crack 2:40 in the marathon and is focused on doing everything he can to reach that goal. Mike knows it is hard to push his body to its limits if you don't treat it well, so he tries to sleep as much as possible and maximize downtime to ensure his body gets enough recovery. Mike also pays close attention to his nutrition with the help of 7SYSTEMS. Prior to using 7SYSTEMS, Mike would always come down with a cold right when his training program would hit the heaviest point but since starting on the product in the spring of 2009 he has not been sick once even though his training program keeps getting harder and longer.
We thank Mike for sharing his story with us, congratulate him on changing his life five years ago and we wish him luck with his racing and training in the years to come.
LINNEA HUMPHREY
Unlike Mike Bosch, Linnea Humprhey is not new to the world of endurance sport. Linnea began doing triathlon in 1992 and did her first Ironman in 1999. Now at the age of 44 and after almost 20 years in the sport this Toronto area resident has completed 17 Ironman races and countless others at various distances. Despite the many years in the sport, Linnea keeps getting faster and is matching or bettering times she did over a decade ago.
We choose Linnea as one of our athletes of the month for her fabulous result at Ironman Brazil this year and her positive outlook and ability to always find a way to DO MORE. Linnea started training for Brazil in mid January on her bike trainer and the treadmill, usually in cramped quarters at the spin studio or the gym combined with a couple of warm weather cycling camps down south. With the help of 7SYSTEMS she managed to stay injury and sickness free the entire winter and spring and hit the starting line ready to go. This solid block of un-interupted training paid off with a 10:16 finish at IM Brazil, which put her 12th female overall and 5th female amateur.
Linnea is one of our many customers that believes that 7SYSTEMS helps keep her immune system strong so she can maintain her health and maximize recovery thereby staying injury free. |

Health Tip - Customized Nutrition |
Endurance sports require extreme attention to detail. Equipment, training, recovery and nutrition are all areas that demand constant fine-tuning. As endurance athletes competing in biking, running, triathlons, swimming, cross country skiing, paddling, rowing and adventure racing, the 7SYSTEMS team knows that proper nutrition is one of the keys in reaching your true athletic potential. Not only do you need the right vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants (or micro-nutrients), you also need the right carbohydrates, proteins, and fats (or macro-nutrients) as well as ensuring you are staying hydrated with the appropriate electrolyte load. As the general level of awareness of the role proper nutrition plays in sports performance has increased some companies have entered the market with innovative concepts. One of those innovative concepts is customizable nutrition.
Everyone is different.
Endurance athletes have different bodies, different training programs and different race day needs. It makes sense that people will need different amounts of carbohydrates, proteins and electrolytes in their nutrition product. Sure you can vary the number of gels you take, add water to your Gatorade and carry salt tablets with you, and with some trial and error figure out how to make that work. But you don't need to do that anymore. We have found a product that does that for you - INFINIT Nutrition.
We're Impressed
We were impressed when we initially heard of the product, but being in the nutrition business we were also a bit sceptical. So we tried it and have been really impressed. We don't often endorse other products but we like this one and we think you might too as it is a good nutritional complement to 7SYSTEMS.
Want To Try It?
Together with 7SYSTEMS, INFINIT will help you get the most out of your nutrition so that it becomes a way to realize your potential rather than limit it. To help you try it out, INFINIT is offering all 7SYSTEMS customers a $10 discount on their first order of their very own customized endurance sports nutrition drink. Just enter the following code when ordering on www.infinitnutrition.ca to get your discount: FB244.

| Recipe - Ollie Blakes' Around the World Granola |
This recipe comes from Jasper Blake's brother Ollie (a gifted athlete himself with a 2:31 marathon pb and a 9:20 finish in his one and only IM) who regularly makes enormous batches of this stuff usually presenting it in large zip lock bags as a Christmas gift. Ollie was given the recipe by a good friend named Al who has sailed around the world and used this granola as a main source of food on those voyages, but it is based on a recipe found in the Tasahara Cookbook, which was one of the whole grain/vegetarian bibles of the 1970s.
This recipe makes about 50 cups of granola. Exact quantities and type of flake, nut or dried fruit doesn't seem to matter too much, so long as you end up with the correct balance of wet/dry and sweet ingredients. A batch this size will last at least a couple of months and costs less than $100. If you are a smaller family it is easier to make half a batch. It can be frozen to be enjoyed later.

Coaches Corner - Interview with Adam van Koeverden
The healthy living website www.Healthynomics.co.uk recently did an interview with 7SYSTEMS Pro Team athlete and three-time Canadian Olympic medalist, Adam van Koeverden. In the article Adam provides some insight into his healthy lifestyle which we thought some of you might find interesting. Here's an excerpt:
Healthynomics: What advice would you give someone looking for ways to motivate themselves to start or maintain a fitness program?
Adam van Koeverden: Well I don't believe you can force yourself to do something you don't like in order to accomplish your goals, I don't think that's the route to success or fitness or happiness or anything. So, finding something you like to do that's a great aerobic workout is key. Mixing that with a resistance program, or some kind of anaerobic, strength building activity which you also enjoy, and fantastic nutrition... Then you've got a starting point. I think people who want to be more active or fit need to think in terms of lifestyle changes, not so much in short term aspirations or modifications. Finding a motivational environment in which to make these changes is also really important... From my perspective, if I didn't have my teammates, training partners and clubmates, I wouldn't be able to work nearly as hard or effectively as I do on and off the water.

| Our Community - TriCan Awards, Groves Update, Welland Crash | |
Triathlon Canada Awards
Triathlon Canada has announced its 2009 award winners and three 7SYSTEMS Pro Team members took home the top prizes. Male Athlete of the Year was Simon Whitfield, Female Athlete of the Year was Lauren Groves and Long Distance Male Athlete of the Yeat was Jasper Blake. Congratulations to Simon, Lauren, Jasper and all the other award winners.
Catching up with Lauren Groves
7SYSTEMS Pro Team member Lauren Groves has had a tough year managing some serious injuries, the most significant occuring in January from a bike crash during a training camp in Maui. In that crash Lauren fractured her left clavicle and right wrist. Coupled with a knee problem that flared up around the same time, Lauren was not able to swim, bike, or run at all for over several months. After several months of treatment and tests and a four-week intensive rehabilitation "camp" where the entire day was dedicated to stretching, physiotherapy, strengthing and light training Lauren is almost 100% healthy. It has a very tough five months, but Lauren is now focussed on getting back to World Cup form. These setbacks have taught Lauren to be patient and to appreciate whatever her body allows her to do on a given day. Lauren is back home to Victoria for a few weeks, then on to Davos, Switzerland, for a training camp, building up some fitness for the remainder of the summer season. We wish her luck.
Welland Half-Ironman Race
June 27th was a day of mixed results for 7SYSTEMS athletes at the Welland Multi-Sport Canada Half-Ironman race. Coach, athlete and long-time 7SYSTEMS user Rich Pady was in the top 3 overall on the bike course when he was hit head-on with the driver's mirror of a car that pulled onto the wrong side of the road while trying to get past a cyclist going the other direction. Rich broke his left humerus, bruised his knee badly, required 10 stitches to his lip and sustained severe road rash on both shoulders and hips.
Fellow coach, athlete and 7SYSTEMS user Nigel Gray sacrificed his race (he was in the top 5 at the time) to stop and assist Rich. Nigel offered immediate care and stayed with Rich until paramedics arrived. Rich spent the night and the next day in the hospital and may require surgery down the road to repair his arm, but is focused on recovering as quickly as possible.
While all that excitement was happening, two 7SYSTEMS athletes, Joe Rizzi and JJ Neely, were putting together some stellar race performances to finish 3rd and 12th overall (1st and 3rd in the 40-44 category).
We salute Nigel for his very classy move, congratulate Joe and JJ on their races and wish Rich a speedy recovery.
Happy Training!
The 7SYSTEMS Team
