Athletes of the Month - Adam Van Koeverden & Bill Logie | ADAM VAN KOEVERDEN
7SYSTEMS Pro Team member Adam Van Koeverden of Oakville, Ontario has had a great start to the 2010 World Cup season. Adam won two medals at the opening World Cup event in early May in Vichy, France and won gold in the K-1 500 and the K-1 5,000 and added a silver in the 1,000 metres at the World Cup in Szeged, Hungary at the end of May.
Van Koeverden, of Oakville, Ont., finished first in the K-1 5,000 m (a new event for this year's world championships with a mass start) with a time of 21 minutes 19.037 seconds. "International long-distance paddling is really competitive," said van Koeverden. "And it's quite a change from racing in your lane where you have your space. In this event, paddles and boats are clanging and sometimes you have to push another boat away so it won't hit you."
Bill participated in the inaugural St. George, Utah Ironman as his first Ironman race on May 1st. Bill had an ambitious goal of a sub 11 hour finish for this tough course. Adding to the difficulty of the goal was that, given the early date of the race, the bulk of Bill's training took place during the cold, dark days of winter in Ontario. However, Bill put in some long cold miles and was ready to do his best in Utah. During the race, after having a disappointing swim and a so-so bike, Bill started the run at the 7:15 mark thinking he did not have much hope of achieveing his goal time. Bill's first run loop (of two) was 1:40 and he felt strong and fresh the rest of the way, completing the run in 3:30. This gave him a time of 10:45, 76th overall out of 2400 (48th fastest run). Bill attributes his later energy and strength to the daily intake of 7Systems which kept him healthy all winter through some tough training and conditions and kept his body from breaking down.

Health Tip - Health Risks Associated with Processed Meats |
Recently, the Globe & Mail published an article with the headline "Processed meats pose real health risk: study"
Since we advocate good health and nutrition for all, we thought it important to pass along this information to our readers. Excerpts from the article are below:
Eating bacon, sausage, hot dogs and other processed meats can raise the risk of heart disease and diabetes, U.S. researchers said in a study that identifies the real bad boys of the meat counter. Eating unprocessed beef, pork or lamb appeared not to raise risks of heart attacks and diabetes, they said, suggesting that salt and chemical preservatives may be the real cause of these two health problems associated with eating meat. "To lower risk of heart attacks and diabetes, people should consider which types of meats they are eating," said Renata Micha of the Harvard School of Public Health, whose study appears in the journal Circulation. "Processed meats such as bacon, salami, sausages, hot dogs and processed deli meats may be the most important to avoid," Micha said in a statement. Based on her findings, she said people who eat one serving per week or less of processed meats have less of a risk.

Coaches Corner - Preventing Osteoperosis Through Exercise | |
About ten million Americans have osteoporosis, and another 34 million have low bone mass (osteopenia). A disease without symptoms, osteoporosis affects about 20 percent of men and 80 percent of women.
A diagnosis of osteopenia or osteoporosis could be scary, leading some people to quit exercise due to fear it will cause fractures.
The reality is that those with low bone mass should make sure to exercise often. Being active may not simply aid the prevention of osteoporosis, but slow bone loss once it has already begun. Before beginning a training program, it is important to talk with a medical expert for guidelines, as degree of bone loss determines exactly what workout is best. Physicians can assess bone mineral density and fracture risk by scanning the body by using a special kind of X-ray machine.
