Athlete of the Month - Adam van Koeverden

Adam is one of Canada's most decorated athletes and a true champion in the sport of Kayak. He firstAdam VK paddling got international recognition winning a bronze medal in the K-1 1000m at the 1999 world junior championships in Croatia, and transitioned to the senior ranks quickly by winning a silver at the 2003 world championships in Georgia in the K-1 1000m. At the 2004 Summer Olympics Van Koeverden won two medals, including a gold in the K-1 500m and a bronze in the K-1 1000m. He was Canada's flag bearer at the closing ceremonies and was later awarded the Lou Marsh Trophy as Canada's top athlete of 2004. Since then he has gone on to win several World Championships and beat his own world record in the K-1 500m at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.  Despite spending a significant amount of time travelling the world as a Right to Play ambassador and breaking his ankle on a trip to the Grand Canyon earlier in the year, Adam was still able to claim bronze in the K-1 1000m at this year's World Championships.

Adam started using 7SYSTEMS several months ago after it was recommended to him by some fellow Olympians.  "I'm always skeptical about what supplements claim they can do, but I really like 7SYSTEMS.  In fact I'm hooked. I've been using it now for over 3 months and I feel great.  7SYSTEMS helps me kick the jetlag I experience travelling for training and racing and is keeping me healthy...that's exactly what I want my supplement to do for me."

Health Tip - The Importance of Bioavailability

One of the most critical but often overlooked qualities of good food, including supplements, is its bioavailability.  Bioavailability means the ability of the body to absorb and utilize a nutrient.  Although bioavailability is affected by a number of factors which vary from person to person (gender, age, physiologic state, etc), nutrients also have varying degrees of bioavailability depending on such factors as the source of the nutrient, the form of the delivery of the nutrient, the presence of certain other nutrients, and the processing of the nutrient.

If a nutritional supplement is not absorbed by your body it is a waste of your money
because your body is not able to use what you are paying for.
Bioavailability varies significantly from supplement to supplement.

We don't want you to waste your money, whether it is $10 or $100.  Check out this independent study that shows the difference in bioavailability between various North American nutritional supplement products. We bet you will be surprised by some of the results.  Of course, we want to brag a bit.

7SYSTEMS is manufactured by Douglas Laboratories, one of North America's most highly regarded manufacturers.  Douglas Labs products are consistently ranked among the top supplement products you can take.  Douglas Labs uses only high quality pharmaceutical grade ingredients and pharmaceutical type processes (ex: cold pressing vs. hot pressing) when manufacturing its supplements.  This costs more, but the end result is worth it; it works.
We created 7SYSTEMS with the mandate that the quality of our product would be among the highest in the industry.  Check out the link below to see why 7SYSTEMS is so effective.
Coach's Corner - Hour of Power

By Jasper Blake

It's that time of year again.  A time when time itself seems to become elusive.  Shopping, parties, crowds, reindeer, house decorating, parades, shorter days, little elves running around, candy canes and yes the dreaded in law visits.

So what is a super motivated spandex-loving athlete to do when time becomes scarce but the body still craves a good workout?
This winter, give yourself the gift of an HOUR OF POWER.  If you only have one hour to spare during the day here is what we would suggest:
Quality vs. Quantity

Go for quality over quantity.  Quantity is good if you have the time to actually get some quantity.  Otherwise stick to shorter, harder sets to maintain fitness over the holidays.  However, don't overdo it if you haven't done quality work for a while.

Keep it indoors
Sometimes the act of getting dressed to go out for a workout can kill half of your allotted time.  Have the bike trainer set up and ready to go so you can get a full hour in without spending 30 minutes getting dressed.  Bike trainer sessions can be controlled right down to the wattage these days, which makes good quality easy to attain and easy to control.  Same idea applies for treadmill runs sessions.

Stick to pace times
If you are going to the pool on your own, have a workout ready to go and make sure it is on pace times.  Pace times are a great way to focus the workout and keep you from getting distracted.  They are also incredibly motivating.

Avoid the commute
If you can do your workout close to home, at home or from home these are all better options over the holidays.  Dealing with traffic, parking and insane, frantic people is a pain in the butt.  Chill out and limit your commutes.
1. Swim: Pool- 60 minutes or less - Mixed Aerobic/Threshold
2. Bike: Trainer - 60 minutes - Pyramid Threshold
3. Run: Outside - 60 minutes - Over/Under Threshold
Our Community - Olympic Torch Bearers

7SYSTEMS athletes carry the Olympic Torch.  We know of four 7SYSTEMS athletes who have carried the Olympic Torch as part of the cross-Canada relay leading up to the Vancouver 2010 Olympics.  Team 7SYSTEMS at ORTA

  • Simon Whitfield - carried it as the very first runner on Canadian soil in B.C.
  • Erinne Willock - carried the flame while riding her bike in B.C.
  • Malcolm Howard - carried it across a lake in a rowing scull with the gold medal men's 8 team
  • Adam Van Koeverden - carried it in his hometown of Oakville

Did you carry the torch as well?
We'd love to hear your story.  Email us you story and a picture at martin@7SYSTEMS.ca
