Athlete of the Month - Bill Logie

Bill Logie
Bill Logie has been an athlete all his life.   A former semi-professional soccer player, Bill now packs adventure racing, run and snowshoe races, mounatin biking, Xterra events and kite boarding into his busy life.  He balances this 'play time' with his Bay Street career as a highly successful stock trader.  We are confident saying Bill is one of the most diverse athletes Ontario has to offer, and 2009 was one his best racing seasons ever.  As one of the longest users of 7SYSTEMS we thought it would be appropriate to congratulate Bill on an amazing season.

"I never thought that as I turned 40 I would actually be getting stronger and stronger .  I started with a stellar snowshoeing season, setting a course record and beating one of my fiercest competitors in a 10km classic up and down the slopes of the Blue Mountains.  I then finished first and second in two running events and finished first in a Duke's Epic 8 solo mountain bike race for my age (second overall, losing to a pro).  To top it all off, I had a great race at the Xterra World Championships in Hawaii, where I finished 13th out of 60 in my category on a gruelling course.

Throughout the season, I've felt my body recover each time I challenged it with a new workout or competition.  Most importantly, I never seemed to breakdown or get sick.  I'm confident 7SYSTEMS makes a big difference in my ability to stay healthy and recover by giving my body's systems the support they needed.  7SYSTEMS works for me like no other supplement I've used before.  I am looking forward to what I can do as a 41 year old!"

Recipe - Traditional Saudi Kabssah

Our recipe this month comes from the Middle East.  7SYSTEMS co-founder Jasper Blake is currently doing some health consulting in the region and wanted to pass on one of the tastiest and healthiest dishes he's ever eaten.

Ingredients

·    1 medium onion, diced to small cubes
·    2 tablespoons olive oil
·    2 medium tomatoes, peeled and diced to small cubes
·    1 garlic clove, crushed
·    2 tablespoons tomato paste
·    1 whole chicken, cut in half
·    1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
·    1 teaspoon ground cardamom
·    1 teaspoon ground ginger
·    1 teaspoon ground coriander
·    1 tablespoon cumin
·    salt
·    pepper
·    basmati rice

Directions

1.    Put the onions in a medium size pot, drizzle on the olive oil and cook at medium high heat until the onions are yellowish and starting to brown. Then put the garlic, cook for a few seconds then put in the tomatoes, tomato paste, salt, pepper and the spice mix; cook it until it becomes a thick red sauce and the tomatoes are almost melted.

Coach's Corner - My Favourite Indoor Bike Workout

by Richard Pady, Head Coach of Healthy Results Training and Creator of IndoorRider.com

Besides my Indoor Rider Videos my favorite winter indoor session is non time based.  You get your ipod or Mp3 player and make a 14 song play list as follows:
    coach pady
  • Songs 1-3 are for an easy spinning warm up
  • Song 4 increase the effort to just below your threshold (so not HARD but not EASY) with a HIGH rpm
  • Song 5 should be easy spin recovery
  • Songs 6 & 7 are spin up drills where you start off slow and continually increase your rpm until you can no longer hold good form.  You then back it off ever so slightly and hold it for the remainder of the first song.  Then repeat it for the second song
  • Song 8 should be easy spin recovery
  • Songs 9-12 should be your favorite songs and total 10-15 minutes.  Push a big gear with good resistance, hold your cadence at 60-70 rpm.  Watch your form (I like setting up my trainer where I can see a mirror).
  • Songs 13 & 14 are for cool down
This is a great workout for any time of the year but is safe to do in the off season when you don't want to be over doing the workouts.  In this workout your heart rate should never hit your threshold meaning that you are riding in your aerobic zone for the entire workout.

7SYSTEMS
at Masters Cross-Country Classic in Sunnybrook Park

On Sunday November 1, a group of 7SYSTEMS customers and athletes came together to compete as a team against some of the best running clubs in Ontario at the annual Sunnybrook classic championship.  7SYSTEMS entered two mixed teams (which meant they raced against all men's teams) and finished 2nd and 5th in the highly competitive Men's 30-40 category.  7SYSTEMS is now a registered masters club and will be entering teams into several run events in the coming year.  Look for us at events, and email us if you want to join the team at an event.

7SYSTEMS Pro Team member Megan Brown WINS the Canadian University Cross-Country Championships

Megan capped off her University of Toronto cross country running career by winning the highly competitive race for the third time by completing the five-kilomentre course at Fort Henry with a time of 16:55.9.  Megan's victory also garnered her athlete-of-the-year honours for the second straight season.

"I wanted to run under 17 minutes," said Brown. "I went in today very strong. I decided that I was going to dictate the race and I ran aggressive from the start which is what I wanted to do."
