JOE RIZZIjoe rizzi im lake placid 09
Joe Rizzi does more!  He is the proud father of two active girls aged 5 and 6.  He owns and operates a plumbing business that employs 10 people and works long days often doing hard physical work.  Joe busted his butt all year in the hopes of making it to the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii.  Joe wakes up at 4am to fit in all his training before a hectic day of work and time with the family.  He is proud of the fact that he rarely, if ever, misses one of his girls swim, dance or soccer practices or events.

Last month Joe reached his goal and qualified for Hawaii at Ironman Lake Placid.  Joe finished the gruelling course in 9 hours 51 minutes and 40 seconds which landed him 31st overall and 4th in his age group!  Joe manages to DO MORE with the help of 7SYSTEMS.

Health Tip - Are you getting enough sun?

Slip, slap and slop is a motto that kids are growing up with these days but are we overprotecting them from natures primary source of Vitamin D?

First let us be clear, there is no doubt that overexposure to the sun can and does lead to significant health problems.  This is primarily because the atmospheric layer that protects us from harmful Ultraviolet (UV) rays is being destroyed by harmful chemicals that have been released into the environment over years.  The prime concern from overexposure is skin cancer.  Overexposure can cause changes in skin cells that can potentially lead to skin cancer.

But have we taken this too far.  The fact is, the sun offers many benefits to the human body and a small daily dose is not a bad thing.  The primary factor is the synthesis of Vitamin D which is initiated when UV rays hit the skin.  Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin that is found in very few foods.  Sun exposure is often our primary source of Vitamin D.  Recent studies have shown adverse health effects for those people who are housebound or live in northern climates where sun exposure is limited throughout the year.  These people run the risk of numerous health issues and the evidence is pointing more and more in the direction of Vitamin D defficency.  In Canada and other northern countries it is becoming common practice to supplement with Vitamin D.  Experts are also suggesting that small amounts of daily sun exposure can work wonders.

So, it comes down to being reasonable.  Certainly on days with a high UV index, apply a reasonable amount of sun tan lotion.  As we head into the Fall however, enjoy the sun's benefits with just the protection of your skin's natural oils.
Recipe - Simple Snacks

pickleHow many times have you been in the situation where you really need a snack but don't have the time to prepare something that falls into the healthy category?  It's far too easy to simply grab a 400 calorie snack at the coffee shop or a bag of chips at the corner store..... not necessarily ideal and definitely not good for you.  At 7SYSTEMS we believe in natural convenience. Here are some quick, convenient, healthy ideas for daily snacks...not to mention, they taste amazing!

"Halvacado Bliss"
Take one ripe avacado, cut it in half length-wise.  Remove the pit and pour in one tablespoon of your favorite dressing.  Scoop it out with a spoon and Enjoy!

"Cottage Cheese Delight"
1/2 cup of cottage cheese in a bowl
1 teespoon of honey drizzled over top
handful of walnuts sprinkled on...delicious!

"Apple Butter Happy Time"
Cut one apple into quarters
Dip in almond butter

"Pickle Poppers"
Wrap half a dill pickle in organic roasted turkey breast slice, dip in mustard if you dare.  Pop it in your mouth and savor the flavor, yummy!

Coach's Corner - Sprint Finish Like Simon

After two full hours of racing it comes down to this.  The last one hundred meters is going to determine who wins and who falters.  Sprint finishes are probably the most exciting element of an endurance sport, especially one that takes as long as a triathlon.
 Team 7SYSTEMS at ORTA
Simon Whitfield has had his fair share of sprint finishes and more often that not he comes out on top.  How does he do it, time and time again?  Aside from genetic fortitude, it often comes down to timing, picking the right line and guts.

In sprint finishes, timing is everything.  It's important in these situations to know yourself and your strengths.  Simon knows that there are very few athletes who can out kick him within 400m.  He knows that if he can be with the leaders in the last stretch he has as good a shot as anyone to win.  The first step is to make sure you are fit enough to be there in the first place and the second is to know how far out you can wind it up.  If you go to early then you risk blowing up.  If you go too late then you risk being beaten by someone with a faster 50 yard dash.  Knowing your strengths and picking the right time is the first step.

Know the finish area.  Before the race check out the final 400m to the finish.  Pick some landmarks so you know where the 400m, 200m and 100m to go marks are so you can gage your effort appropriately.  Also look for any corners, obstacles, rises or downhills, and sections where the footing may be an issue.  Having this knowledge beforehand will help you make the right choices when it comes time to put on the turbo booster.

The third aspect is having the guts to hang in there until the end and go for it.  You have to adopt a "now or never" type of attitude and be willing to bury yourself even when you feel like you have no more to give.  Adrenaline is often your best friend in these situations and it should be no problem recruiting enough of it when you find yourself in that situation.  An additional trick Simon uses is to hold his breath.  Thats right.  He does not breathe once he starts his sprint until he crosses the line.

So next time you are out on a training run with some friends or in a race of your own, pick the right time to wind it up, hold that breath and go for it.  You'll find it exhilarating and fun and you can even pretend that you are Simon going for Gold.

Race4MS
On August 30th, 2009 Jasper Blake and four teamates took part in Ironman Canada to raise money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada.  All team members finished under the cut off time and collectively raised over $110,000.  The inagural year of the program was a smashing success.  "I'm blown away by the amount we raised with only 5 people" said Blake.  "It was a huge success and will be a significant contribution to the MS Society for this year".  The Race4MS is on again in 2010.  Fifteen spots have been secured for anyone interested in doing Ironman Canada 2010.  For more information you can visit the Race4MS website at www.race4ms.org.

Way to Go Rich Pady!

On July 26th, 2009 Richard Pady and nineteen Race 4 Kids athletes took part in Ironman Lake Placid with the goal of raising $300,000 for Race 4 Kids.  The event was a huge success.  Check out race 4 kids!
