Athletes of the Month - Simon and Lauren |
SIMON WHITFIELD
Earlier this month 7SYSTEMS athlete Simon Whitfield won arguably the biggest triathlon of the year. The ITU Des Moines race boasted over $1 million dollars in prize money with a very healthy $200,000 for the victor which ensured every top athlete from around the globe was in attendance. Simon used his renowed run speed to win in one of the most exciting finishes in triathlon history. In the final stretch a dramatic six man sprint finish ensued with Whitfield making an inspired accelerattion to narrowly edge the German who beat him for gold in Beijing along four other top competitors for the win. Check out the Contest section below to watch this and two other great sprint finishes by Simon.
LAUREN GROVES
Not to be outdone by her 7SYSTEMS teamate, Lauren Groves picked the best possible race to have her top finish ever in a World Cup. Lauren ran brilliantly to claim 3rd place in the ITU Des Moines race and claimed a whopping $25,000 for the effort, a fortune in the world of triathlon. Just ahead of Groves were the womens gold and silver medalists from the Beijing Olympic Games. Groves' solid racing so far in 2009 has moved her ranking into the top 10 in the world. Congratulations Lauren! For more details, read her Slowtwitch interview.

Health Tip - Simplify Your Food
These days there seems to be as many types of food as there are theories about how to eat them. Add to it the idea of nutrition for sport and optimum performance and eating right can really seem like a jumbled mess. There are low carbohydrate, high carbohydrate, low fat, high fat, south beach, Atkins, fruit only, vegetarianism, veganism, carbohydrate loading, raw food and just about any diet you can think of. So which one is the right one and how do you wade through all the garble?
It's time to take a step back and simplify, simplify, simplify. Here are seven simple rules that will help you make smart food choices.

| Recipe - The Blake's Mediterranean Lentil Salad |

When Jasper, Jude and Finn Blake invite the Whitfield clan over for dinner after a hard days training, they always serve food that is filling but full of wholesome and healthy ingredients.
One of the dishes that gets rave reviews from Simon, Jennie and Pippa is the Mediterranean Lentil Salad.

Coach's Corner - Doing an Ironman |
Ironman is one of the toughest single day endurance challenges on the planet. Finishing with a marathon can seem like a daunting task and often is the one thing that people seem to dread the most especially when doing their first Ironman. We asked one of Ironman's fastest runners how he gets from start to finish quickly and efficiently while maintaining focus.
