Athletes of the Month- Mike Neill & Jordan Rapp |
|
|
Mike Neill 7SYSTEMS Affiliate Coach Mike Neill was once again the top Canadian at Ironman World Championships in Hawaii, finishing in a time of 8:57. Congratulations Mike! Your persistence and dedication have taken you far from your early days of starting triathlons 15 years ago, barely able to swim 25m. At 36 you are faster than ever before and an inspiration to us all. For a great read on his race and what it take to get ready, visit his blog.
Jordan Rapp
"The first shot rang out at 6:50 am. And from there, the mayhem began." That's the way Jordan's day started at Ironman Arizona. He went on to set the fastest bike split & new bike course record and finished the 140.6 mile race in 8:19:45, finishing 3rd (by a mere few seconds) while breaking the old course record. We salute a long time 7SYSTEMS user and supporter! Read the full story at Rappstar.com.
Just in case you were wondering, we do not pay our profiled athletes to use 7SYSTEMS- they all use it because it works for them!

Health Tip- Coping with Hectic Holidays |
|
The holidays are often crammed with last minute shopping, family and friend obligations, traffic jams and of course heavy meals with some liquid Christmas cheer. This stress, combined with a reduction in exercise, sunlight, sleep and healthy eating habits, can often lead to a "perfect storm" of factors for getting sick.
Fighting a flu or cold just before you kick-start the 'Base Training Season' in January is no fun. Can't remember what it feels like to be sick? Finn, Jasper Blake's son, does a good job of demonstrating.
Ultimately is is often the depletion of key micro-nutrients combinsed with dehydration that leads to getting sick. To keep your immune system functioning optimally:
- Drink lots and lots of water. Consider switching out a juice high in fructose and glucose for good old water. Keep your pee clear.
- Top up the vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants that your body may fall short of at any given time by using 7SYSTEMS daily.
- Grab a fruit or vegetable snack instead of the Christmas cake.

| Coach's Corner- Sleep vs Exercise |
|
It's not easy to create balance at this time of year but Santa will be the first to tell you that it's good to maintain some balance in your life. The two areas of life that often take a back seat are sleep and exercise yet both are critical to the healthy maintenance of our bodies and minds. With limited time to spare in the day one might be posed with the question of which to choose if we have a spare hour. We say: choose both! Here's how:

Sleep- Lack of it on a large scale can severely inhibit your ability to have fun and enjoy the holidays. We are a nation of sleep deprived work junkies at the best of times and at the end of the holidays we are likely less rested than at the beginning. A simple strategy is to take mini naps of about 15-20 minutes during the day. Find a quiet, dark place in the house and just disappear for 20 minutes. Trust me, people will hardly know you are gone and you can even claim a lengthy bathroom break as the excuse. Lie flat on your back, close your eyes and take several deep breaths relaxing a different part of your body with each exhale. It does not take much sensory deprivation to revitalize the brain and invigorate the body. With a couple of these per day your awake time will be much more productive and enjoyable.
Exercise- Redefine your definition of exercise as "outside activity" this holiday season. You may not get your long bike ride in but you can easily get a good walk in with the family. Or better yet pick an activity that you can all do outside in the snow rather than watching another movie. Embrace the opportunity to try some different activities like skating, tobogganing (run everyone's sled up the hill and you'll get lots of thanks) or a good snowball fight! |
