OLYMPIC FOLLOW-UP
In August we profiled our 2 Olympic Athletes, Lauren Groves and Colin Jenkins.  As we saw in the spectacular coverage of the women's race, Colin went on to play a major role in assisting Simon Whitfield to his Silver Medal finish.  Lauren unfortunately took a bad spill on the bike that left her with a broken arm.  In the true spirit of never giving up however, here's a note she recently sent us that so clearly demonstrates why she is a champion:

"Thank you to 7systems for helping get me to the start line in Beijing healthy and ready to race.  Now I am hoping it will help me heal faster.
My disappointment in Beijing has only motivated me even more for London 2012.  I look forward to working with 7SYSTEMS to help achieve that goal."

Athletes of the Month- Linda Wager

LINDA WAGER
Linda, 51, is a self-proclaimed former couch potato who has transformed into an amazing runner.  Her particular passion is focused on marathans and ultra-marathons.  In fact, she compiled a collection of stories, edited and published the book "Canadian Marathon Stories" and continues to receive stories on her website, www.CanadianMarathonStories.ca.  The book is a fundraiser for www.CanadianAthletesNow.ca and recently helped Priscilla Lopes-Schliep receive bronze in hurdles in Beijing, by offering financial support thru the sales of the book.

"When I set a goal, I like to achieve it.  I had not run long distances in 2 years. My plans to run a marathon in May and a 50K endurance run July 18th in Alberta, as part of the Billy Loutitt 100 Mile Journey, would make nutrition a priority in my life. As fate would have it, my diet was not the best in April & May but my training surprisingly went quite well. The supplements were helping me achieve my marathon training.  In July, I turned 50K into 53K, by just pushing a little bit further.  I finished feeling like I ahd gone for a nice 6 ½ hour run! I attribute this to taking 7SYSTEMS.  I know the 7SYSTEMS helped me not only with stamina but with my recovery.  I was able to go beyond my physical limits, with no residual pain, no inflammation, and very little tightness."

We wish Linda all the best with her training and all the other activities she is involved with to keep Canadians active and healthy.

Just in case you were wondering, we do not pay our profiled athletes to use 7SYSTEMS- they all use it because it works for them!
Health Tip-
Vitamin Whole Body Support
What Is a Vitamin:
A vitamin is an organic compound required as a nutrient in tiny amounts by an organism.  A compound is called a vitamin when it cannot be synthesized in sufficient quantities by an organism, and must be obtained from the diet.

What Vitamins Support:
Vitamins are essential for the normal growth and development of multicellular organisms.  From the very beginning of our development as a fetus, we require these critical elements at specific stages to grow properly.  Once we have finished growing, vitamins remain essential nutrients for the healthy maintenance of cells, tissues and organs.  Vitamins are also critical components in our ability to utilize chemical energy provided by food by helping us process proteins, carbohydrates and fats required for respiration.

How To Get Vitamins:
Vitamins are most commonly found in fruits and vegetables and are often favorably utilized by the body when ingested in these forms.  However, with the current state of food in the world, the fruits & veggiesnutrient content of fruits and vegetables can be suspect.  When fruits and vegetables have to travel hundreds of miles to get to the grocery store there is a nutritional cost.  In order to make the trip the food is often picked well before it ripens on the plant.  Because the fruit or vegetable is away from its life source, it can no longer ripen fully and as such the nutrient content is diminished significantly.  Another factor to consider is the state of the soil where a great deal of fruits and vegetables are produced.  The mass farms are often overproducing the same crops on the same land which inevitably depletes the soil of the nutrients that help the plant grow.  The net result is fruit and vegetable sources that are largely deficient in vitamins and minerals.  In the good old days, people had their own fruit and vegetable patches and this food was eaten straight from the source which meant vine ripe and no soil depletion.  The food was in tact and full of nutrients.  This type of food is becoming increasingly rare in today's society.

Why 7SYSTEMS Has Vitamins:
The reason for whole body vitamin support in 7SYSTEMS is that we understand the fast paced, hectic world that exists for most people.  Even if quality fruits and vegetables were readily available most people would rarely find the time to consume enough to be sufficient.  By including healthy amounts of vitamins such as:
  • A (maintain healthy skin, eyes, teeth, gums, hair, mucous membranes and glands)Team 7SYSTEMS at ORTA
  • Beta Carotene (Converted by the body to vitamin A & Serves as an antioxidant)
  • B-1, B-2, B-3, B-5, B-6, B-12, B-7 (Aid in energy utilization from food and help form red blood cells)
  • C (Strengthens blood vessel walls  & helps with iron absorption)
  • D (Helps the body use calcium and phosphorus properly)
  • E (Necessary for the formation of normal red blood cells, muscle, and tissue)

Hopefully this gives you the peace of mind that your body is getting all the vitamins it needs with 7SYSTEMS.  Learn more about how 7SYSTEMS supports your body's critical systems at www.7SYSTEMS.ca. References: Available upon request

Coach's Corner- Epsom Salt Baths
Epsom salts (also known as Magnesium Sulfate) are used commonly to: (a) reduce stiffness, soreness, and tightness of joints and improve discomfort from muscle aches, pains, and tenderness; (b) soothe bruises, sprains, and strain; (c) improve the body's sleeping and resting productivity, and (d) get over jet lag.

For endurance athletes, the most widespread use of Epsom salts is bathing in it for recovery.  Epsom salt baths are taken routinely before a major competitive event (although one needs to be careful not to de-hydrate) or after a hard race or training day to help reduce effects of the hard effort.  Many coaches recommend routine Epsom salt baths weekly as a form of injury prevention as some research has found that Epsom salts may accelerate the body's healing time by up 1/3. An Epsom salt bath may also help bring about a more productive and restful sleep which can be important when repeated hard training is negatively effecting sleeping patterns.

Epsom salt baths may be taken daily to help speed up the recovery process brought on by high physical or mental stress levels.  In order to get the best results you should put 1 cup of Epsom salts into the bath water for every 60 lbs of body weight.  The water should be as hot as you can take it and still be comfortable but should not exceed 104 degree F (use a thermometer to ensure it is not too hot).  Soak in the water for 15 to 20 minutes.  While in the tub rub your skin all over with a wash cloth to open up your pores to improve absorption of the Epsom salts.  If some areas are more sore than others rub them a little longer and if you are treating an injury rub both the area of the involved site on one extremity and the same area on the other extremity (bilateral stimulation reflex).  Don't rinse off before getting out of the bath tub, just dry off and retire for the evening (it is always best to do these baths at night before go to bed).  The following morning you should notice that you slept better.  Also the aches, stiffness, tightness, soreness, and pains should have noticeably decreased and continue to decrease with normal movement and activities.

Remember that if you want to take a soap bath - do it first, because soap does not work in an Epsom salt bath.  Also, we do recommend that you should have some water for drinking near the tub while taking the bath to stay hydrated and since hot baths can make you light headed and thirsty.
