We're in the middle of summer. It's warm, it's sunny and everyone is out doing more. That's why we've focused on a few extra Success Stories this month.

Athletes of the Month- Greenberg, Blake and Team 7SYSTEMS |
|
|
MICHAEL GREENBERGMike, 34, works in the investment industry. He lives in Toronto with his partner and can often been seen squeezing in a triathlon workout between meetings or at lunch time along the city's waterfront trails.
"My results are much better than last year. I've been training more consistently for a few reasons - I am more motivated, I have no injuries so far (touch wood) and have generally higher energy levels. My results this year include: 1st in my Age Group at the World Triathlon Sprint Championships, 4th overall at the Guelph Triathlon, and 4rd overall at the Peterborough triathlon.
I started on 7SYSTEMS in the fall of last year and I have really noticed a difference in my energy levels, especially when I do a hard day. I wake up the following day still feeling good and ready to do another session. Given I work long hours on Bay Street, having an all-in-one supplement is the easiest and most effective way to make sure I have all the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients I need. What surprised me most was how noticeable it was when I ran out of 7SYSTEMS and had a couple of weeks without it. I had a noticeable decrease in my energy levels and motivation. I would wake up feeling heavy and tired. I got back on the system as soon as possible. Love the product!"
We wish Mike all the best at the Owen Sound Triathlon Provincial Championships and the National Champs in Kelowna.
Team 7SYSTEMS @ Oak Ridges Moraine Adventure Relay
On June 14, 7SYSTEMS supporters teamed up for the 2nd annual 160 km relay race. The 5 member team paddled, biked and ran along the Oak Ridges Moraine in an effort to help bring awareness to this sensitive Moraine and its vibrant habitat located on the outskirts of Toronto.
"We got off to a great start on the canoe and never looked back, despite some wrong turns on the run. With temperatures that went well above 30 C it would have been expected that times would have been slower, but in fact we all felt stronger than ever. With the sun still high, we hit the finish line in King City, shattering their 2007 finish with a 10 hour, 41 minute Overall and Elite win."
Thanks to team manager and competitor Stacie Smith for organizing the team. We wish the team's members all the best in their training as they get ready for next year!
JASPER BLAKE
Jasper recently won the Subaru International Half Iron in Vancouver.
"After leading the swim solo I came out with a minute lead and proceeded to get thumped on the bike. It was a tough 90km and for some reason the legs just weren't cooperating. I came off the bike 4.5 minutes down on the race leader and 3.5 minutes down on Andrei Yastrebov, an Ironman champ. I really thought I was done for but my running lit up and I started bringing them both back. With 5km to go I was still 40 seconds down but gaining. I caught 2nd at 17km and moved into the lead at 18.5km and held on to win. The best part, I ran a 1:09 half marathon, posting the fastest run time of the day, and I have been told perhaps one of the fastest ever in the sport."
The Subaru International Half in Vancouver will be televised on August 11th on CTV Sportsnet. Jasper is one of the co-founders of 7SYSTEMS and is always looking for ways to do more. Just in case you were wondering, we do not pay our profiled athletes to use 7SYSTEMS- they all use it because it works for them!

Health Tip- Jasper's Anti-Bonking Math |
|
What It Is:
Bonking or "hitting the wall", describes the condition when an athlete suddenly loses energy and becomes fatigued, resulting from the depletion of glycogen stores in the liver and muscles Why It Happens: The average human body stores enough glycogen to generate 1500 to 2000 kcal of energy. Intense cycling or running can easily consume 600-800 or more kcal per hour. Unless glycogen stores are replenished during exercise, glycogen stores will be depleted after 2 hours of continuous cycling or 15 to 20 miles (24 to 32 km) of running. Symptoms of glycogen depletion include general weakness, fatigue, and manifestations of hypoglycemia, such as dizziness and even hallucinations. Not even brief periods of rest will help fix the problem and the positive effects of a workout can be totally wiped-out.
The Math
Bonking can be prevented easily. Here is the simple math you need to remember:
- 1g of carbohydrate per kg of body weight per hour minimum
- 2g of carbohydrate per kg body weight per hour max
- The lower the intensity the more you can digest, the higher the intensity the less you can digest
- Salt----over 4 hours you need 1000mg/hour
- Hydration you need a minimum of 1 liter per hour......that is me at 130lbs in normal conditions. you in hot conditions probably closer to 2 liters.......that takes practice....it's a fair bit to take in. spread it out. drink every 5 minutes which ends up being 100-200ml every 5 minutes which is easier than 1 liter every half hour.
In Jasper's opinion Gatorade provides almost no benefit. Gleukos can helpful but you need to add some sodium, or use a product like Salt Stick for longer events.

| Coach's Corner- Specialization Period |
|
Earlier in the year we described the periodization approach for developing a training program. It divides the year into separate periods, with each period having a broad training goal. In our tip we described four periods we called:
1. Foundation 2. Preparation 3. Specialization 4. Transition The Specialization period focuses less on workouts for energy system development and more on the specific demands of your races or upcoming events:
- It's a cross between the two workout extremes of high-speed training and easy recovery.
- There is no time to improve overall aerobic conditioning because it is difficult to maintain peak conditioning for a long time.
- Great care must be taken so you do not enter the specialized training period too early. It is very difficult to maintain deep aerobic fitness as you vary workouts between high-speed training and easy recovery spinning.
