South Carolina Arts Commission News
October 2011
Hello everyone,

One of the topics we heard repeatedly as we developed the Long Range Plan for the Arts in S.C. 2011-2020 revolved around South Carolina's image and the role of the arts in how our state is perceived by others. What better way to promote a positive perception than to celebrate the value and success of the arts? We know there are myriad folks devoted to ensuring that the arts enhance our state's image inside and outside of its borders. Those artists, individuals, businesses, organizations and government agencies are excellent candidates for Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Awards and Jean Laney Harris Folk Heritage Awards. I hope you'll consider nominating your community arts champions for the appropriate award this year.

At the last Statewide Arts Conference, held in September 2009, your feedback was, "yes, offer this again!" We are pleased to announce that the next Statewide Arts Conference will take place Feb. 8 in West Columbia, conveniently scheduled to complement Arts Advocacy Day on Feb. 7. Although the arts community has, out of necessity, focused on "surviving" the past two years, we're planning the conference with a focus on "thriving" and preparing for the future. We'll share more details soon, but go ahead and save the date on your calendar.

Sincerely,

Ken May
Executive Director

Artists invited to apply for Fellowship

Individual artists working in prose, poetry, dance performance, and choreography are invited to apply for the FY2013 fellowship awards. Application deadline is Nov. 1.

Fellowships recognize and reward the artistic achievements of S.C.'s exceptional individual artists and may open doors to other resources and employment opportunities. The S.C. Arts Commission board approves fellowships based on recommendations made by out-of-state panelists, who select fellows based solely on a review of anonymous work samples. Each artist receives $5,000.

Nominate a champion of the arts for an Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Award!

Elizabeth O'Neill Verner
In South Carolina, we are fortunate to have numerous individuals, businesses and organizations who support and promote the arts.  Now's the time to recognize these champions with a nomination for the Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Governor's Awards for the Arts, the highest honor the state gives in the arts. Nominations are accepted in these categories: arts in education, organization, government, business/foundation, individual and individual artist. Visit the website for nomination materials and guidelines. Nomination deadline is Dec. 15.

Who was Elizabeth O'Neill Verner?
Mrs. Verner achieved an international reputation for her etchings and pastels, many of which capture the spirit of the S.C. Lowcountry. She was also a teacher, writer and historian. Throughout her 96 years, Mrs. Verner traveled abroad extensively. Drawings of S.C. residences, churches and street-life portraits are Verner trademarks recognized throughout the world for the way they capture our state's unique people and architecture. Mrs. Verner's studio was located on Tradd Street in Charleston.
Nominate traditional arts practitioners & advocates for a Folk Heritage Award!

The S.C. Arts Commission and USC's McKissick Museum invite nominations for the Jean Laney Harris Folk Heritage Award, an annual award presented by the S.C. General Assembly to honor those who have spent a significant portion of their lives advocating for and/or creating traditional art forms significant to S.C. Up to four artists and one advocate may receive awards each year. Visit the website for nomination materials and guidelines. Nomination deadline is Dec. 15.

Who was Jean Laney Harris?

A state representative for Chesterfield and Marlboro counties, Jean Laney Harris was respected as an outspoken advocate and ardent supporter of the arts and cultural resources of the state. During her 18 years in the House of Representatives, she was chair of the Joint Legislative Committee on Cultural Affairs and played a major role in the recognition of South Carolinians for their contributions to the arts with the Folk Heritage Awards and the Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Awards.

Save the date - Statewide Arts Conference returns Feb. 8!
