Marty Fort
Marty Fort
Marty Fort started teaching guitar lessons when he was 15 years old and opened Columbia Guitar Academy right after college with just a few students.  Today, the
Columbia Arts Academy

is the largest private school in the state, offering voice, bass, guitar, piano and drum lessons. Because of his skill at marrying musical talent with business acumen (as well as his involvement in the community), Marty was honored as one of The State paper's 20 Under 40 in the Midlands

Columbia
, SC artist Doni Jordan is participating in the Dream Rocket Project, a global collaborative initiative that aims to connect art and education. Jordan has long had a passion for symbols, punctuation and typography. She chose one single ancient symbol, "@," which literally means "at," but which she reinterpreted to mean "all inclusive" for her panel.

Visit the Dream Rocket Project website for more information on the project and Jordan's panel.  And stop by our blog for the complete story!

2010 S.C. Arts Commission Fellows

February 2011

Well, the S.C. Arts Commission, apparently! We have received an overwhelming amount of support over the last few weeks from folks all over the state who value the arts as an important part of their daily lives.

It's appropriate, then, that this issue of the newsletter gives you some great resources on how to enrich your daily life of art.  Whether you want to improve your marketing acumen, get some grant writing tips or protect your work and your paperwork, we've got you covered.

And of course, if you would like to come out and show your love for the arts during the S.C. Arts Alliance's annual Arts Advocacy Day, we've got details on that, too!

Arts Advocacy Day

The S.C. Arts Alliance is holding their annual Arts Advocacy Day on Feb. 8 at the Statehouse in Columbia.  Join fellow arts advocates in the Statehouse lobby at 11:30 a.m. to show your support for the arts!

The S.C. Arts Alliance (SCAA) is a private, non-profit statewide assembly of arts organizations, educators, administrators, business and private individuals, that serves its constituency by providing advocacy, resources and technical services. They are South Carolina's leading arts policy advocacy organization. The SCAA serves the arts through advocacy, technical assistance, and leadership development in South Carolina.

For more information on the SCAA or Arts Advocacy Day, visit the SCAA website or Facebook page.

Marketing the independent artist

The website of the National Arts Marketing Project (NAMP), provides information, tools, and practical ideas to design high-quality, cost-effective marketing programs and strengthen arts organizations. Their Advisory Committee provides expert guidance and constantly seeks new resources and information to keep the site relevant and useful.

NAMPRadio's episode 11 features panelists discussing the day-to-day grind for individual artists having to promote themselves, including best practices for how to create relationships over the years that have grow into a powerful following. Visit the NAMP website to listen to the show.

The Artist's Guide to Grantwriting

Make 2011 the year you take your art career to the next level. Stuffed with advice, anecdotes, and strategies gleaned from dozens of interviews with artists, fundraisers, and grant decision makers, The Artist's Guide to Grant Writing, written by Gigi Rosenberg, is designed to help you navigate the competitive world of artist funding. Our own fearless leader, Ken May, is quoted in the chapter on budgets!

The Artist's Guide to Grant Writing grew out of Gigi's popular workshops that empower artists and writers to craft winning proposals and fundraise for creative projects. Written in a down-to-earth tone, this 224-page book is designed to transform readers from starving artists into working artists who confidently tap into all the resources at their disposal. Geared for both first-time and seasoned artist/grant writers, the book includes strategies, anecdotes, and tips from grant recipients, grant decision makers, and fundraising specialists.

For more information, visit Gigi's website.
